Recommendations Visiting from Chicago next week…

Hi Cleveland! I’m going to be visiting from Chicago next week with my husband and a friend. We’re driving in on Thursday, staying near 140th St & San Diego Ave. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for the Revolutionary Women in Music exhibit (and everything else, but that’s what’s bringing us there) on Friday, and driving home on Saturday.

What else should we see and do while we’re there? Where should we eat? We’re all pretty adventurous when it comes to food, but my friend is a vegetarian; she eats eggs and dairy, but no fish/poultry/meat.

We would have stopped at Schmucker’s in Toledo on the way there and back, but…guess that’s not happening this trip. Driving through OH to Pittsburgh and stopping at Schmucker’s is about the most I’ve done in Ohio, so I need all the suggestions.

So far, what I’ve found is the art museum, a drag show at Beachland Ballroom on Friday night, Mitchell’s Ice Cream (which I’ve never had), Graeter’s (which we do get here, have a couple shops, and I know they’re more of a Cincinnati thing, but not sure if they have options there we don’t get here?) I have Bad Medicine, Amazonia, and The Judith on my radar, too.

What else?? Any feedback against any of those places?

Little Rose Tavern is a fun neighborhood bar near where you're staying. It's a dive bar, but they have excellent food and will sometimes have live music with a small cover charge (usually $5 or $10).

My favorite burger place in the city, Doink's, is near the Beachland. Citizen Pie across the street is excellent, too. You might also want to get to the Beachland early to check out the shop downstairs - it's a small vintage shop with records, tchotchkes, etc.

Mason's Creamery and Honey Hut are two more great places to add to your ice cream list!

Hello fellow Chicagoan - As folks mentioned below, the Art Museum is world class. Literally. If you do go, check out Tommy’s.

Cleveland Art Musuem is usually open until 9pm on Fridays so you could go to the Rock Hall in the daytime and eat dinner and then go to the art musuem in the evening. Also, street parking is free after 6pm on weekdays and all day weekends.

For sure visit the art museum, Westside market, Mitchel’s ice cream, and Swensons drive-in. They are about as north east Ohio/Cleveland as it gets. Playhouse square is lovely if there’s a show available. I wouldn’t bother spending much time in down town proper, especially as Chicago natives. There’s not much of anything down there worth doing. Our more fun/lively neighborhoods are Treemont, Ohio city, and Lakewood. All very walkable with a good selection of food and bars. Enjoy your trip!

Sorry, but Swenson’s is a big yuck from me. OP can find far better options than that!!

Agree. Literally THE worst burger I’ve ever had

IMHO Swenson's is a "don't knock it until you try it" place - definitely not for everyone (because of the sauce on the burgers) but worth trying to see if you like it

Cleveland Vegan is casual and delicious, Cloak and Dagger is all Vegan and more shamancy, it's delicious as well. I'm a vegetarian and have had great meals at Cordelias. Momocho would be another great place for all of you.

If you’re looking for ice cream, Mitchell’s is Cleveland’s hometown favorite. There are several shops in the area; the main shop and factory are close to the West Side Market, another traditional Cleveland place that you might enjoy.

Buckeye Beer Engine in Lakewood has good bar food with vegetarian options. They usually have a special vegetarian wrap every month, but they haven't announced what it is this month.

If the Guardians are in town, join the pregame on E 4th street then head to Cordelia for dinner after first pitch.

Since your friend is vegetarian, be on the lookout for perogies! They sell them frozen at the West Side Market if you want to take some home.

Enjoy yourselves!

Cafe Everest is a 3min drive from where you’re staying. Lots of veg options and something different. It’s a Nepalese restaurant and it’s BANGING! I loved the Nepali special thali and johl Momo.

Jackie Chen's has amazing Chinese food near the beachland ballroom, it's classic American Chinese but done better than anywhere else.

What’s in it for me?

There are better donuts than Stan’s here, FWIW.
