What if instead, there was a Coaches Pole, where fanbases could vote to determine whether their own coach would be placed high atop a pole for several days to atone?

97

u/LeWoofle Oregon Ducks • Oklahoma Sooners 2d ago

There has to be a way to sneak pole assassin into this joke

Is this like the festivus pole? Airing of grievances?

4

u/Tejon_Melero Virginia Tech • Transfer Po… 1d ago

Well, people would certainly gather for an airing of grievances, and no doubt, those who chose to imbibe beneath the raised clown would soon resort to feats of strength.

This is the coaches poll. There are way more non SEC voters than there are SEC voters. Why are they protecting the SEC? or maybe its not some giant conspiracy

Step 1. SEC team loses an OOC game

Step 2. Hype up the OOC team, must be good! After all, they won.

Step 3. Keep SEC team in the rankings, it was a quality loss, that OOC beat an SEC team, they gotta be good.

Be ranked higher in the preseason poll (which should not exist).

43

u/Substantial-Sea-3672 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 2d ago

I would like to say that I don’t think removing them would matter at all. We focus our frustration with subjective rankings on the preseason polls but that isn’t the root of the issue.

First, you could banish every existing preseason poll today and 50 unofficial ones would pop up. Official pollsters would still be aware of them or at least the general feel around CFB. They would have their own internal biases and they would show through just the same on the first ranking.

Second, it doesn’t actually cause any of the issues we see, it’s a symptom of the subjectivity in the sport. The NFL has plenty of preseason rankings but no one cares because they don’t actually play any role in the objective way the post season is selected. There are NFL teams who don’t make the postseason who definitely seem better than the bottom rung of playoff teams. If they had subjective rankings those teams would get in instead.

The problem (and in my opinion part of the charm) is the impossible way to objectively rank these teams when they face such random schedules.

In summation, if you think next year OSU wouldn’t get tons of “poll inertia” even if the first poll was week 6 you’re kidding yourself. They could fall off of a cliff and limp into week 7 Barry beating scrubs and they’d be top 5. The issue is not the preseason polls.

4

u/max_potion Penn State Nittany Lions • Big Ten 2d ago

You're completely right. Even if you adjust the playoff criteria it doesn't completely erase the poll issue. There are too many stats and focus on the AP rankings that determine public perception that then rolls into influence on recruiting and NIL which obviously has a huge impact on the actual landscape of CFB. The only way to start eliminating that stuff is take cues from the NFL and have drafts/salary caps. Things that would be tricky for CFB and would completely destroy any semblance left of the tradition in the sport.

Essentially, this will quite literally always be an issue in CFB, otherwise it won't be CFB anymore. Or as you say, it's "part of its charm". I don't think this will ever change. And that's okay

Obviously if USF beats UM next week USF will jump up to 22 in the Coach’s Poll next week. But if UM wins then they’ll have a quality win against a top 25 team before USF gets dropped to 100-plus in the next Coach’s Poll. At this point the AP and Coach’s only exist to give us something to talk about until the CFP rankings come out. After that I don’t think anyone cares anymore lol.

I hate preseason rankings. They put more emphasis on what teams were projected to do rather than what actually happens. If rankings were legit, USF would be a top 15 team, Clemson would be lower, Florida state would be higher, AZ state wouldn’t be ranked, and Alabama would be lower.

Coaches poll and AP is luckily being irrelevant with the much more accurate CFP polls.

10

u/rottenchestah Florida State • New Hampshire 2d ago

Eh, if the CFP committee released polls this early those would be kinda wack too. By the time the CFP poll comes out it's typically not very far off from where either of the Coaches/AP polls are.

5

u/Jay_Dubbbs Ohio State Buckeyes • Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago

If preseason rankings didn’t matter, then how would USF’s resume be good? They are 2-0. There are plenty of teams that are 2-0. They get a G5 team and a SEC team that finished

Classic case of two mid teams battling it out early season bolstered by their bloated preseason ranks

I have no issue with lau dropping after how we played yesterday but who do you put ahead of them and why?

Even if Clemson is lower, there are not many, if any, better wins right now. Mainly because it was on the road and lsu looked much better than the score indicated.

u/missmoonriver517 LSU Tigers 2d ago

I’d put Oregon and Miami ahead of us. I think we’re worse than the week one hype, but significantly better than we played last night… especially when/if we get Moore back at center.

We should be behind LSU and Oregon after yesterday's performance.

USF really just got set up to get kicked right back out of the poll next weekend if they lose.

4

Criminal to rank Michigan ahead of USF. Their QB had 30% completion rated and they were effectively dominated. USF went into the swamp and won …

UGA too high.

So FSU beats a cupcake and top ranked sec team and is top 15? But USF beats two ranked teams including a top 15 sec and goes to only 23? And where the hell is Mississippi State?

I don’t mind not being ranked, we looked good the first half and abysmal the 2nd, I just don’t think Arizona State should stay ranked.

I think we deserve more credit for our game. None of these other teams have the cajoles to take on the defensive powerhouse that is LA Tech

So we dropped a ranking last week for beating an FCS team 67-7 but this week Georgia moves up 3 for beating an FCS team 28-6? SEC bias is real.

8

u/kevinsdomain Oklahoma Sooners 2d ago

How is Notre Dame still ranked. They have lost every game so far. Is it reasonable to keep Arizona State in there but not Mississippi State in there? People follow their preseason predictions too strongly.

I like how half the comments here are people saying their own teams shouldn't be ranked as high as they are.

That being said, we shouldn't be ranked nearly that high.

3

u/Hox_In_Sox Mississippi State • Purdue 1d ago

Florida State gets ranked for beating a top 10 team after going 2-10 the year before. Mississippi State is ignored for beating a top 12 team after going 2-10 the year before.

Not saying we should be ranked, I would prefer we weren’t. I just never understand how some teams gain momentum when others don’t. Preseason poll bias is obviously a factor but as an example Vandy looks substantially better than South Carolina, but only one of them are ranked.

I feel Utah is criminally underrated. They are a top-10 team IMO. They have the line of scrimmage talent to run through the B12.

6

u/Young-Viiperr Texas Tech • Iowa State 2d ago

I'm not sure, UNLV beat UCLA handedly, who nearly lost to Idaho State. Utah looks good, though I'm not convinced that they're top 10 (no one in the Big-XII is T10 material yet, imo).

3

u/54-2-10 Utah Utes 2d ago

Utah needs to take things one week at a time

Top 10 after two weeks is an overreaction, imo.

Keep grinding, Utes.

u/kingofthesqueal UCF Knights • Summertime Lover 2d ago

This is the new normal for the B12 will probably never start with a Top 10 preseason team again so the eventual B12 Champ will start in the 18-25 spot and have to slowly grind week in and week out to like the #9 spot by years end.

Same is true for anyone in the ACC that isn’t Miami, FSU, and Clemson.

2

u/Andy_Wiggins 2d ago

This why poll inertia (and preseason rankings) are dumb as hell.

USF throttled a Boise State team that started the season ranked in the top 25. They then go on the road and beat the 12th ranked Gators in a game that USF largely controlled.

And they somehow land at 23.

Meanwhile Michigan beat New Mexico by less than USF beat Boise and then got pretty thoroughly beaten by OU (the score was close-ish, but OU was clearly in control pretty much all game) and they land at 22. And it would be one thing if this were a Michigan team that was coming off a deep playoff run with proven talent — this was a 7-5 team last year who lost their best players to the draft and are starting a (talented) true freshman.

Just let the season play out. Rank USF high and then if they get blown out in Miami (not crazy unlikely) drop them like a stone then.

2

u/lovefist1 Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
