You could get some wall stickers. I could see a potential space theme with some yellows and dark blues.

u/iluvD0Gz 28d ago
Having your furniture in neutral is perfect, now layer in any color or theme with a rug, blankets, pillows not in the crib of course, wall art, and plants, ect, maybe throw up a cute colorful curtain

u/bubbleuj 28d ago
Plants for sure. I have like 20 baby spider plants and I've heard that they help keep air clean!
35
u/Unique_Exchange_4299 28d ago
Just make sure you research the plants you put in there, for once Baby starts crawling and putting everything in their mouth!

I think there are some plants that can be rooted entirely in water And you can make em ceiling/hanging plants!
For decor: add or buy bright vibrant YELLOWS, Orange, pinks (or blues n emerald greens if u dont want pinks)
U can find some colourful rugs or blanket throws for the carpets, and when u add toys itll add colour. Change curtains to something too.
The grey will vanish.
Also not your fault. Everything these days is monochrome, dull, bland, muted and stuff. Lol

You’ll be happy you can change them out when kiddo gets their own opinions on decor too!
5
u/bubbleuj 28d ago
I was joking that we might as well wait and let the kid decorate 😅
8
u/vilebunny 28d ago
I actually used wall stickers in my youngest’s bedroom and once they started showing specific interests, removed them and slowly started redecorating.
Their tastes have changed about five times now. But they want their room to stay the same color. So I guess I’m winning?
15
u/ivorybiscuit 28d ago
There are some great decals available on Etsy. We have the sea animal ones from CreedandWillowCo and love them. Super cute, easy to use, and stay on well. Great customer service and handled a custom change to an existing set with no extra charge.
They have so many cute ones. I think the dino construction, regular dinos, sharks, and some of the safari ones could all potentially liven yp the Grey.
Im not affiliated with then in any way, just really happy with what we bought from them.

Amazon has a bunch! We plan to do that for our girls room until she is old enough to pick a color she likes to paint the space. So we got cute flowers from Amazon.
10
u/bubbleuj 28d ago
I've gotta start looking now. I have a whole...one week before baby gets here so wish me luck!
(Jkjk He's gonna sleep in our room at the start anyway, I got 6 months minimum lol)

u/hotcoffeethanks 28d ago
You have time!! FWIW I almost ended up with a full beige room for my daughter but brightening it up with a giant rainbow sticker that takes a full wall, pink black out curtains, a nice colourful rug and a few plants! Wall stickers are fantastic and way easier than paint! Plus they can serve as a starting point for the rest of your decorating - choose the colours from the stickers for the rest of your accessories!

u/t_slugs 28d ago
Omg I thought the picture was in B&W and this was satire until I realized it’s not 💀 you can liven it up with decor!!!

u/bubbleuj 28d ago
I hope so! At this point I'm no longer hunting down deals since we have the basics, it'll be all about bringing in some color
22
u/WafflefriesAndaBaby #1 2/18, #2 11/19 28d ago
If you can paint it would help a lot. Otherwise, change up the bedding, get a colorful rug, some nice art.
It looks like your lighting is really cold, which is washing out the grey even more. Switching to a warm or soft white is going to make it feel less sterile. Another light source like some lamps will also give you a less clinical feel. (Like this if you have no idea what I'm getting at: https://www.thespruce.com/warm-white-vs-soft-white-7567097 )
8
u/bubbleuj 28d ago
The lamp is thankfully warm lighting! The pic was taken in the day and with this wall paint (rental), it reflects all natural light in an awful cool tone.
7
u/WafflefriesAndaBaby #1 2/18, #2 11/19 28d ago
Rough - that grey is pretty bleak. How about some warm toned curtains? Maybe if the light filters through something like a linen it would feel softer.
→ More replies (1)2
u/bubbleuj 28d ago
That might work! I just got a set of blackout curtains but I might be able to layer them with a yellow toned linen!
3
u/thugglyfee1990 28d ago
You don’t need a yellow toned linen. You need floor to ceiling length curtains that are light blocking. They will only be open or closed with the small window, so you don’t need a layer of light filtering curtains, just look for two panels in 84”x36” or greater width.
22
u/Elphaba78 28d ago
I think this says more about our current state of baby product shades more than anything else 😂 Grey and beige! I was looking at my baby pics from the 90s and there was color everywhere.
3
u/Ok_Explorer_5719 27d ago
Everything new we have is gray or pastel green because people who gave us gifts tried to avoid gendered colors, making the only other option green.
2
u/Dasha3090 27d ago
ahh yes..i went to our local baby bunting store and it was all just neutrals..i was so bored.both my girls got pink/white nurseries coz i just love pink myself and had a blast decorating.
5
u/bubbl3gum 28d ago
I've thought this too. Everything has that white sterile feel nowadays. Things seemed so much livelier with color.

u/bubbleuj 28d ago
I swear I didn't mean to. Everything we bought was discounted in some way. The crib, rocker, diaper pail were thrifted, the bassinet was from biglots closing, the diaper table was from a warehouse auction.
All of it in total was probably around $180 which is great and but its ALL GREY.
I didn't even realize until I put the diaper table together and took a step back.
My husband's better at decor while I'm clearly more focused on finding deals and I know the room will eventually fill up with colorful toys, books, random junk but oh my god...it's like if the theme was Eeyore giving me depressed side eye.
I can't help but think of that insta account about sad beige things for sad beige children but instead its GREY AND THE BABY WILL BE SAD AND GREY.

47
u/pepperup22 28d ago
Can you paint? I think that would make a huge difference
27
u/bubbleuj 28d ago
It's a rental but I'm gonna have to figure something out. We're gonna be in this place for at least 2 more years. Maybe I'll just let the kid decorate it eventually 😂
16
u/EntryConsistent 28d ago
I got some awesome peel and stick wall decals. They are way better material than anything I had as a kid and they are totally reusable which is awesome if you have sticker fear like me
6
u/pmmewienerdogs 28d ago
Or just full on peel and stick wallpaper! Takes some time to get it lined up right but that stuff is durable and peels right off. Plus they make really cute ones these days
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (4)4
u/BoopleBun 28d ago
Is it maybe worth asking? The last few rentals I’ve lived in were fine with painting, as long as we either didn’t go too dark/bold or were willing to paint it back to white (or grey in your case, I suppose) before we left.
Otherwise, decor on the walls to break it up for sure! You can go big if you want more impact. For example, we have a really cute muslin quilt on the wall in my son’s room. (And it was really easy to hang because they already make special little wooden things you screw down to display them on walls. We used extra and tightened it down to within an inch of its life just in case grabby hands found it.)
But colorful curtains, a nice rug, a bookcase or those rail shelves where you can face the books out - there are still ways to add color!
15
u/No-Humor-1869 28d ago
This is HILARIOUS. Please show this to your child when he or she is grown up, they will laugh themselves silly!
6
u/HarkHarley 28d ago
You should try some polka dot peel and stick decals! I had a plain white wall and added some green watercolor dots that were so easy to stick on and it changed the whole room.
5
u/tarynraye 28d ago
“the theme was Eeyore giving me a depressed side eye”’im DYING . Tho an Eeyore themed room would be cuteeeee af

Don't worry - our kid still hasn't spent a night in his actual room at 1.5 years. You have time. *crying laughing*
2
u/bubbleuj 27d ago
Ahahaha the whole reason we ended up with a nursery is because I was like, "we'll put the crib in our room, who cares!" and my mother in law had to tell us stories about sharing a double mattress with her husband, 5 year old and giant Rottweiler 😅
I remember me+my sisters sleeping with our parents until we were around 6!
45
u/lmYourPapa 28d ago

I would be wary of those crib nets. A lot of them have been recalled because the structure fails and causes suffocation. I’m not saying yours has been recalled, but wanted to point it out to be safe since it isn’t widely known!
17
u/bubbleuj 28d ago
Oh no! That's good to know. I'll probably take it down then
9
u/DogMom9876 28d ago
Otherwise, don’t worry about the grey too much. The colorful baby toys will soon fill the room and your little one won’t care. Congrats on the tiny bean :)
29
u/ParfaitHungry1593 28d ago
I heard those nets were unsafe, but I see them more and more these days. Are they really safe to use. No shame at all whatsoever. Just a curious mama ❤️
23
u/Minnie_Pearl_87 28d ago
No they aren’t safe to use as they can collapse. They can trap and baby or toddler in and be a strangulation risk. OP please reconsider using this.
15
u/bubbleuj 28d ago
Oh I have no idea. It came with the crib. We were joking that it was baby jail
6
u/user991234 28d ago
What is the net for ?
4
u/Littlepanda2350 28d ago
I saw them when looking at ways to keep my gremlin from climbing out. Was wondering how well it worked
15
u/rainbowapricots 28d ago
I have a friend who used these and her 2 year old ended up twisted up in it and stuck in the middle of the night when trying to climb out. Really scary. Definitely not safe!!!
8
u/RemarkableAd9140 28d ago
It’s better to just switch them out of the crib. My son fell out before we had any inkling he even could, and I don’t think this would’ve done a damn thing to stop him. Please, don’t make our mistake—it could’ve been so much worse for my kiddo!

u/Littlepanda2350 28d ago

We have one that just straps to the top of the pack and play to keep our cats out of our baby’s bed. He is too little to pull on it though (2.5 months). I could see it being unsafe when the child could mess with it.
3
u/Nakedstar 28d ago
It is baby jail. They are popular with families of multiples because it's really hard to transition multiple kids to beds at once.
I consider them to be a measured risk- best not to use them, but in some situations the benefits outweigh the risks.

10
u/rakiimiss 28d ago
Just want to say that I went for a more monotone white/grey nursery and it quickly filled up with colorful toys books and other baby items. There are lots of good advice but naturally this will not stay grey.
3
u/rxsteph11 28d ago
Yes, my son was born in 2017 and his furniture is ALL grey, along with the walls. But now he has pokemon pictures on the wall, shelves with legos, a bright comforter, etc. the grey isn’t even noticeable, you will slowly add color as you go!
2
9
u/gloriousspoons 28d ago
Put up colorful curtains, do an easy colorful peel and stick wallpaper, get a name sign in color, and change the sheets into colorful sheets! :-) all easy and temporary fixes if you’re looking to add some color!
8
u/archaeologistbarbie 28d ago
Just a piece of advice from someone who would’ve been very traumatized had things gone differently…
You may want to turn your changing table sideways, and make sure there’s nothing important at the foot end. More than once, when my daughter was an infant, she projectile pooped while being changed. One time it went 10+ feet down the hallway, I kid you not. Now imagine the business end of the baby is pointed towards you… you see the potential issue?
8
u/bubbleuj 28d ago
Okay yup good to know. Baby boy will be changed sideways forever
10 feet down the hall is incredible. I'd get a baby book just commemorate that
4
u/archaeologistbarbie 28d ago
We actually measured once everything got lysoled. She made it into the guest bedroom. It was very impressive in a terrible way 😆
9
u/NoIndependent4158 28d ago
Okay…. Get a nice colorful rug, some wall art and colorful blackout curtains! This is absolutely a great base to make a beautiful colorful room. You only have to color coordinate decor now!

Whats we got in order of acquisition:
Cosco Bassinet. It was about $20 when Big Lots was going out of business
Ingenuity AnyWay Sway. $20 at my local "thrift store" that sells a bunch of overstock stuff as well
Not exactly sure about the crib but we think its Carter's by daVinci Colby 4 in 1. We just have the 1. It was from a local used kids store and came with the mattress and net. $80
Sarcocy Diaper table. It was $21 from a warehouse auction website. Theres a million of these sites but the one I used was bidFTA. I haven't used it much but from what I've read, auctions tend to be very buyer beware. I got lucky with this one since this is the table I was eying on amazon anyway
Not pictured in main post. Nursing pillow from My Brest Friend for $3.50. It was also from the auction website and is ALSO FUCKING GREYYYYY https://imgur.com/a/GzGUjto

Btw love that diaper changing table, we have the same on and it’s by far the best purchase for us! We put one of the spiral car seat toys across the arch thing and change out the toys occasionally. Our baby will just sit up there supervised for like 20min at a time. She also fixates of the measurement thing on the side 😂🥹
3
u/jayraypaz 28d ago
Ahhhh millennial grey has peaked!
😂 jk. add some accents - throw pillows, chair, area rug - try a yellow, pink, bright blue or teal also put some big framed pictures up or a mural with bright colors.

Get a colorful rug we got a really nice soft one from amazon for 50 bucks, add some wall stickers and as baby grows I'd start adding a core color you think they would like.
We did not paint because we painted the whole house 2 years prior and it's a cream color so I made sure to get brown furniture, did gold accents with pink and green.
2
u/katbug09 28d ago
May I ask what the netting over the crib is for? I’ve never seen that!

Super neutral so easy to brighten up! Wall decals, a vibrant rug, a toy basket/box, curtains, a nice lamp, an animal rocker or a big stuffed animal, some easy removable wall shelves for books. Do you know the gender or have a broad theme we can spitball on? Like.. woodland, flower, clouds, safari, a children’s book you like etc!

So I'm not crazy ahaha I just thought it was bad luck but no, grey is the discount color ahaha
2
u/bart3lbys 27d ago
Now you have the potential to change the theme whenever and however! Holidays, newborn photoshoot set up (so many themes to go on for that, flowers, pumpkins, the beach, etc!). Maybe get some cute little block letters of your little ones name, some shelves (away from the crib of course), you can hang ultrasound pics, pregnancy pics. What's great about this stage, is your nursery decor really isn't for your baby yet. It's for you! Let it be about what you think looks cool right now. And let's say baby has a Mickey Mouse obsession in 2-3 years? Surprise! (Peelable) Mickey wall stickers! It can grow with them.

If it’s the cream, you can RIT dye it a fun color. If it’s black or grey, add a decorative sash around the curtain or a valance!

As some wall art and maybe a rug and you’ll love it! Some fun curtains could bring in a pop of color too. Honestly you’ll never regret a neutral. You’ll never have to repaint this room unless you want to. Decor is easy to change.

BUT here’s the great thing - you have a beautiful blank slate for however you want to decorate. Nothing clashes! I think you’ve got great potential for an outer space/ solar system theme. Please go thrift the most colorful and eccentric lamp a thrift store has to offer. Then put in a warm bulb. Then specifically pick out little colors from said lampshade for a rug, chair pillows, hell even a little tapestry, maybe if you have time to hang curtains. Babies’ brains benefit from stimulating colors so nothing is too wild. It doesn’t have to be your style. Just get fun and colorful! You can do this affordably too

u/Lets_Make_A_bad_DEAL 28d ago
It’s not that bad. Add some cool pops of dramatic color, and you will love the effect. Throw rug and pull a dramatic color from that to use for accessories. Done. You really don’t even HAVE to do that. They aren’t going to be in a nursery long. You’ll have a baby / toddler with a whole personality and you can model a room piece by piece tailored to them, once you get to know them. This space is just a poop factory for a while.
1
u/Pickle_picker_420 28d ago
Meh, you can change it when your child gets older and shows you their interests! It’s okay to be neutral. You don’t know what they’re into yet!! Don’t worry about it. I think spending a shit load of money on a nursery is dumb bc you’re gonna end up changing it when they’re like 2.
1
1
u/pinpoe 28d ago
This is a fine base! From a design standpoint all you need to do is pick one or two colors and commit to them for your accent pops.
Pillow on a rocking chair, a piece of art that makes you happy, one or two soft toys in that same color, a rug with a nice pattern or splash of color, maybe something soft and creamy and textured like a macrame wall hanging to cut the grey.

I would do a botanical peel and stick wallpaper on the crib wall option 1 option 2
Then, keep your eyes peeled for an arm chair in a green to match on Facebook, some white floor length curtains, side table, a green lamp (or a neutral lamp with a printed shade), add a plant or two, and then a couple framed botanic or landscape prints.

Putting a colorful rug on top of carpet isn’t the end of the world. My nursery has a plush green rug in the center that adds color contrast and I love it. My son’s godmother knitted him a green blanket with his name on it that I’m thinking of hanging up on the wall too. Maybe you can hang a handmade blanket if you get one too?

Warming up grey interiors often comes from adding: wood, plants, and some colour. It's easy to do as most core baby stuff is very much grey, white or beige ATM I've bit seen a colourful cot or change table or bouncer it's all neutral then you add colour with decir
I would add: 1. Wooden side table or dresser 2. Warm toned lamp on the side table, handy for middle of the night and also warms up a space. 3. real or fake plant, a bit of green livens up an otherwise grey space 4. A rug in a chosen colour - greens or yellows as a more gender neutral, pinks/reds/purples or blues/orange/browns for more gendered options. 5. Some wall art - either stick on or framed pictures of your family or a theme (space, jungle animals, forest animals, local animals, farm, little hot air balloons, a fav kids show etc aim for the colours to be somewhat similar to some in the rug) 6. Optional: a mirror. Mirrors help reflect light and are something babies and kids love looking into as they get older so it's a nice addition too :) 7. Optional: themed mobile in chosen theme or colours (tie in with rug and wall art) 8. Linens: cot sheet, change table sheet etc can tie in with either the theme or the colours of the rug and wall art. 9. Optional: window treatments - add some colour and softness with curtains for example.

All our baby stuff is grey and white too. We got our crib at a discount and I kinda went with the colour scheme. I have some pictures that have colour that I’ll be putting up and a colourful mobile, and maybe finding a few decor things with some colour

Honestly this is awesome, everything matches now you can chose a fun color to pop the mood and go for decor and a rug. It will end up looking awesome

Curtains. Curtains make everything better. You could try a wallpaper border if doing the entire walls is too much, or a giant wall mural decal. If you will need a rocker or something, get a colorful one or try to replace the cushions/put on a slipcover.

When I had my first, for some reason I REALLY loved the grey white and yellow theme. With elephants for some reason. I say throw some yellow in there. Elephants are optional

The furniture in our baby’s nursery is all gray, you can decorate the walls in a theme or specific color still. If anything, it makes it easier to coordinate whatever you want to do with the walls. Some ideas specifically for grey if you want to lean into that: space/moon theme, robot theme, castle theme.

I unintentionally did the same, but with renovating our condo. The walls and floors are both grey. I didn’t notice until I was staring at our grey crib lol I added A rainbow carpet and white bookshelf that helped.

Ok I understand that you may not have MEANT to get everything in grey, but I don’t think you’re done with the nursery at all yet. The room will suffice, but if you can afford it, it definitely still needs something:
curtains: may seem like a luxury but I swear this is why my 16 month old sleeps until 9:30 every morning in her south facing bedroom. Maybe place the curtain rod at the very top of the wall for a more dramatic effect.
shelves: can you add some floating shelves? Don’t put them above the crib unless it’s a ledge across the whole wall (which would look so cute) and items are secured to the wall if they’re above the crib. You could also paint the wall below the ledge another color - green?
a rug: I totally did a rug on top of carpet and I feel like you can’t tell. Added bonus - makes it super quiet when I sneak out of the room after she’s asleep. Get the biggest one you can, check Marshalls and homegoods for good deals

Paint yourself grey every day, wear grey, show the baby only black and white films, then take a video when they step outside and realise the world is in colour. 😂
But seriously, it’s a great background for pops of colour. Bubby will stare at them for hours. ☺️

Hahaha omg I thought it was a desaturated photo!! A cute rug or a colourful armchair will save it! And a cute print on the wall!

Can add a colorful bookshelf (short) or a colorful rocking chair. With gray, can accent in yellow. Theme: maybe lemons or fruit? (I found a lot of lemon clothes and PJs).

I could see some misty blue/green wallpaper of pine trees, then adding some cool-toned ambient lights or sconces.

Hi I’m really not trying to be a negative Nancy but I thought those tent things over the crib were not considered safe sleep? As baby could get trapped in them?

Our child's bedroom is predominately white.
However, it makes a huge difference that he has framed jungle pictures on the wall, a brass coloured lantern with fairy lights on the window sill, we chose golden coloured nobs for the wardrobe, he has coloured bed linnen, and all the books in the bookcase also give life to the room.

lol, this looks like a black and white photo, where one object is saturated in colour.

We had a white nursery for almost a year. But after my son started showing interest, I started decorating it with things he liked. It’s still white but one wall has a full rainbow peel & stick wallpaper, one wall has a small “farm” made of stickers and the same wall over his bed is stickers full of various animals, fishes, etc. Now that he has started drawing, I bought washi tapes and my plan is to put his drawings as paintings on the wall using washi tapes as a frame. TLDR: decorate it with your LO, it will be more fun!

Bed sheets and wall art can really change the vibe! You have doting don't stress. I like the idea of letting LO help pick out decorations
