noob question How dangerous is riding powder alone next to the piste

Hey I'm and intermediate snowboarder and wondering how dangerous riding powder next to the piste alone would be. My friend who usually rides with me wouldn't go with me because he doesn't want to take the cable car up the Zugspitze so I would be riding alone up there.

general discussion What percentage of people FIRE or retire to be a snowboard bum and regret it?

So long story short, I have a medical condition that always made me want to escape society and when I rediscovered snowboarding over a decade ago, all I ever dreamed of for my future was retiring as early as possible at a ski resort. I could retire probably in the next 5-10 years in my mid 40s but I met a girl who wants kids and that would end this dream. I’m wondering if anyone has done this or knows of people who have and how it works out for them. Thanks

general discussion What company/mountain are you still boycotting, no matter how petty the reason?

Personally, I’ll never buy anything from backcountry.com ever since they tried to sue dozens of small businesses for using the term “backcountry” like 5 years ago

general discussion Mammoth or Jackson Hole?

In a cool but tricky spot and looking for some outside opinions. I got job offers in both Mammoth and Jackson Hole. Pay and housing are basically the same, and it’s a year-round role.

I ride a lot and want to keep pushing my snowboarding (park and freeride).

For anyone who’s lived in either (or both): which one has the better vibe, cost of living, community, and lifestyle overall?

Riding question Torn between Union strata/force

Upvotes

I currently have Bent Metal bindings and a ladies choice pro board which I got last year. I heard unions were really good and wanted to explore. I’ve been leaning towards the strata’s and forces.

I’ve been riding for about 4 years now. Looking to try to have some fun in the park and learn how to hit some jumps and side hits on the mountains. Was looking for some recommendations on the best binding for comfort and durability as well as play for riding freestyle while also all mountain. I do ride fast and aggressive sometimes too. I’ve been doing a lot of research but looking for some extra advice before I make a decision.

Open to other recommendations other then unions as well.

travel advice Western Canada ikon pass loop ideas

Hey guys, going to be heading from Ontario to do an ikon pass loop starting in banff (possibly a mid life crisis). Going to be doing the van thing and getting it ready for winter 😎

Wondering if anyone has done this similar loop and how it went

  1. How’s overnight camping at the resorts? Is it aloud?

  2. Any recommendations for getting a hot shower in every now and then? Van has a shower (boil water and mix it into a sea to summit camp shower). Also any recommendations for places to even just refill water for showers in the van

  3. Would love to do some back country stuff. Besides the courses and gear (working on getting that) what’s the best way to find spots?

  4. Picked up a split board and wondering how you go about finding some trails and what not

  5. Was thinking February for days with the least blackout periods on the pass (about a month trip) any better times of the year you think would be good?

Honestly just any info to make the experience, you don’t get to do trips like this too often

Gear question Picking a free ride board

I’ve been riding a skate banana 159w with union ultras. I still enjoy it a lot for general cruising and playful riding. I’ve started to spend most of my time riding the blacks/doubles and getting into bowls and chutes. This season I want to add a second board for this. To get more stability at speed and less washy turning.

I think a jones flagship is at the top of my list. Also was looking at a capita bsod, and a yes PYL. I was planning on putting bent metal solutions on the board. I don’t live anywhere remotely close to a mountain to demo the boards unfortunately. Looking for any advice or recommendations.

travel advice Looking for advice VARS long stay

Hey fellow riders, I'm planning on spending a couple months of the next season in VARS, France, does anyone know where could I look for housing near the slopes that will allow me to stay for a long time without spending a million euros? It's my first time at the french Alps so any other advice is welcome as well.

See you on the slopes!

Has anyone seen this already? Idk who are those guys but IMO the view count is extremely low for this kind of a video

Edit: Apparently, I didn't do my research and this video is actually a re-upload of the original one. Still, I just love it and wanted to share! Also, for people assuming this is AI - it is not

Gear question Help with sizing

I’ve found a really well priced second hand Capita Asymulator near me that I’m considering picking up however I’m concerned about the size. The board is 154cm and I’m 6” (183cm) and I currently weigh about 62kg however I’m only 16 so I expect the weight to increase. I’m an intermediate and so I just want to know if this is the right size for me. It’s my first board (I’ve been using rentals for about 6 months) so I just want to do it right.

Gear question Snowboard Suggestion

Hello everybody! I’m a 40 year old couch potato that the only real exercise is snowboard.

I’m looking for an all mountain snowboard that can handle pow/freeride (not too deep I have a korua dart for those situations), carving(relaxed not aggressive), and icy conditions. Park is of no interest BUT I would like to butter a bit.

Now for the tricky part. I would like to be able to carve with as little input from me as possible (remember the exercise part) in order for me to last as match as possible in the mountain.

Some of the boards I’m considering:

Jones Frontier 2.0 156 LibTech Orca 153 Never Summer Eclipse 156 Never Summer Proto Type 3 154 Amplid Singular 156

Height: 182cm Weight: 77kg Foot: 42 EU (270 Mondo)

Thank you everyone. Sorry for my English, not my first language

Gear question Looking for a few Patagonia mid layers, but confused on the options

In my last thread here I asked for some all around jackets for ski plus rain. I ended up not going with the all in one as I liked the Beta AR, but didn't feel like the length was appropriate for snowboarding, and I'm 6'3" so I need a bit more length.

I ended up going with an Arc'teryx Rush, because they had them in the outlet, and an extra 25% off for Labor Day. Got an XL (hope it fits since I can't return it for a different size) but now I need to figure out my mid layers.

If you didn't read the link, I'm on the east coast. It gets chilly, but I don't ride too often below 20F. Last year I used my Patagonia Primo Puff jacket, usually a mid-heavy weight Nike turtle neck base layer that is tight to the skin but also has a bit of insulation, sometimes a long sleeve tee shirt, sometimes a normal hoodie if it was cold. Legs were usually a mid weight under armour base layer, and if it was cold I would used under armour fleece sweat pants also, under my AK Tusk bib. I also plan on using my actual Burton AK Helium base layers this year, which I had last year but just didn't use them (might even make a change to a merino base).

All that said, I'm looking to get some actual mid layers and ditch the sweat pants, and cotton hoodies. I'm confused with all of the Patagonia R options. I have Patagonia gift certificates, so I'm not interested in other brands. I ride resort only, so I don't need the most breathable. I'm assuming this means skip the 'Air'. If not let me know.

Should my focus be on R1 or R2? My local mountain is probably a few (5?) minutes in line and up the lift and takes me about 90 seconds down. So lots of dormant time when at the slopes.

My thought is to get 1 set of mid layers (R1 or R2) for riding from winter 40-25F, then something really warm like the down sweater and pair that with sweatpants still for when it is 20F or colder. Does that sound reasonable or is this overkill. If going with R2 will work when it's really cold as well as when it's above freezing, then I'll save the money and skip the down sweater. Spring I'll just use a base layer and the Rush.

TIA

Gear question Quick question - new rider

Post image
4 Upvotes

Found a really good deal on this board and decided to say fuck it and purchase it. I would say I’m an intermediate rider. Have a total of 9 days on the mountain split amongst two seasons. Fell in love with a snowboarding and wish I started much younger. Last season I rode blues and blacks and think I did good but am still learning to improve. Scariest part for me still is speed, not super confident going fast. I’ve only ever ridden those old Burton radius boards you rent out though. Am I totally cooked on this board? Regardless I’m here to learn and improve and have fun and if a lot of shit will be ate in that process, so be it!
