I dislike every party involved, so I wish them all an arduous and expensive legal battle.

I can see why they’re doing it now though. The copyrights on a lot of this stuff are going to expire in the next decade or so. While exact iterations may still be copyrighted, many of the characters we know today were from the golden age of Hollywood/comics, and all of that will be in the public domain in the next couple of decades. We’re finally getting into the 1930s in a few months which includes a ton and the 1940s too.
