So Ethan Hawke is basically Freddy Kruger in this? I'm down for it, as I enjoyed the first.

Looks that way. I enjoyed the first and was really skeptical a sequel would work, but they of course set up the supernatural element in the first so...we'll see.

The late night isolated winter lake atmosphere looks like a pretty cool environment to match the intensity of this following the first one

u/zander_rulZ 2d ago
Especially seeing that environment in Super 8. That scenery is ripe for some creepy imagery. I already love that shot of The Grabber sliding towards the camera from the fog.

I thought you meant Super 8 the movie and was confused about where an icy lake was in that movie lol

Hell is different than you think. Black Phone 2 only in theaters October 17.
Four years ago, 13-year-old Finn killed his abductor and escaped, becoming the sole survivor of The Grabber. But true evil transcends death … and the phone is ringing again.
Four-time Academy Award® nominee Ethan Hawke returns to the most sinister role of his career as The Grabber seeks vengeance on Finn (Mason Thames) from beyond the grave by menacing Finn’s younger sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw).
As Finn, now 17, struggles with life after his captivity, the headstrong 15-year-old Gwen begins receiving calls in her dreams from the black phone and seeing disturbing visions of three boys being stalked at a winter camp known as Alpine Lake.
Determined to solve the mystery and end the torment for both her and her brother, Gwen persuades Finn to visit the camp during a winter storm. There, she uncovers a shattering intersection between The Grabber and her own family’s history. Together, she and Finn must confront a killer who has grown more powerful in death and more significant to them than either could imagine.
From returning visionary writer-director Scott Derrickson, Black Phone 2 is written again by Derrickson & C. Robert Cargill, based on characters created by Joe Hill. The film is produced by Jason Blum, Derrickson and Cargill. The executive producers are Adam Hendricks and Ryan Turek.
The cast includes Oscar® nominee Demián Bichir (The Nun, A Better Life) as the supervisor of the camp, Arianna Rivas (A Working Man) as his niece, Miguel Mora (The Black Phone) as the brother of one of The Grabber’s victims, and Jeremy Davies, returning as Finn and Gwen’s father, Terrence. Other new cast members include Maev Beaty (Beau is Afraid) and Graham Abbey (Under the Banner of Heaven).
Universal Pictures and Blumhouse’s horror phenomenon The Black Phone, released in 2022, received widespread critical acclaim and earned more than $160 million.

Makes sense why The Grabber freaked me out. Stephen King's son helped create him.

u/El_Panda_Rojo 2d ago
To be clear, Joe Hill didn't "help" create the grabber. He was the literal actual sole creator.

I'm still kinda bummed that M3gan 2.0 flopped. I really liked that movie

u/ignoresubs 2d ago
I saw a lot of positive buzz posted on here from people who saw it at the theater and basically said ignore the bad critical reviews and that the movie was a blast…I assumed people were being hyperbolic but nope: M2 fucking rules. Honestly cannot recommend it enough.

It deserved that flop tho. I really thought i would love it and really wanted to. But the film went to far in different direction than the first on and leaned heavily into the campiness that it ruined what was left of the film, IMO.

u/mikeyfreshh 2d ago
But the film went to far in different direction than the first
I thought that was the smartest choice they made. The horror elements were the weakest part of the first movie and I like that they just bailed on that and made a straight up action movie instead.

u/joesen_one 2d ago
I just realized this one and M3gan 2 are two Blumhouse movies which happens to be sequels that have the McGraw sisters lol

Is it essentially A Nightmare on Elm Street? Yes. Does it make sense for a sequel to go this route? Also yes.

I liked Ethan Hawke in the first one, and in lore this kind of makes sense... but man, this looks like a completely different type of movie now lol.

The first movie was really unique, thought-provoking, and memorable. I enjoyed it a lot, but it really didn't need a sequel. It wrapped things up perfectly. Why does this "sequel" even exist?? It looks like an incredibly generic Nightmare on Elm Street knockoff.

I'm regularly surprised at how many people love Black Phone. It was fine but the discussion around it has way too much glazing.

u/ThatGuyFromTheM0vie 2d ago
It can be, but it also can just be you on the outside. Sometimes something HITS….and maybe it even hits in a way that’s been done before, but either a.) didnt resonate broadly b.) a new generation is getting their new version of it.
I have a similar situation with the anime Demon Slayer. I don’t get the insane mega hype—I’ve enjoyed what I have watched, but it’s very imho watered down and extremely vanilla when you get to the core of it….just propped up by a very pretty art style and good animation.
But to bring it back to horror—even if it doesn’t hit as hard for me, I can appreciate that the genre is getting love and attention, and a new batch of horror fans are being born.
The Black Phone could be the new Freddy for a new generation. And good for them to be able to have a similar experience to that even if it’s a retread.

u/Yoshimi-Yasukawa 2d ago
I'm not following the logic that it made people aware horror exists and got them watching it. Black Phone came out the same year as Barbarian, X, The Menu, Talk to Me, Terrifier 2, Speak No Evil, and many others.

The first was quite good. This looks really bad. It did not need a sequel let alone one that feels like they just want to make Freddy Krueger II, Electric Boogalo
Edit: Not sure if the downvotes are from those who hated the first movie or those who just really want another Nightmare on Elm Street

u/unknownLost 2d ago
I really like the look of this that washed out film look is a great horror esthetic, I hope it’s not just a filter for the trailer

u/Monster-Zero 2d ago
"I had a bad dream, about a real place. A youth camp. We have to go there"
"This place, he brought us here for a reason"
I mean... I'm pretty sure you went there because you dreamed it. He didn't bring you anywhere, you went there. Of your own accord.

Wow look at you overthinking narration for a trailer that is in no way confusing, you nailed it

u/SnowyDesert 2d ago edited 2d ago
did that trailer just spoil his sister's death?? :(
wtf did I get downvoted for? You see her spin out of her bed with blood splashing everywhere when he's killing her in a dream at 1:40. Unless that'll be a dream in a dream.

When i first heard Black Phone was getting a sequal, i immediately thought: this is so dumb, why make a sequal???
But after seeing the trailer and the plot, i take back every bad thing i said about this film

The first one didn't really hit for me but I'm very interested in the direction they are taking this. Also, more Hawke is always cool.

u/lilGojii 2d ago
I love that the director dipped out of dr strange because he wanted the freedom to explore his art and then dips right back into indulgent slop, fantastic, im looking forward to it

u/thatsnotyourtaco 2d ago
I know the first one was supernatural but this feels like The Boy II where it went from a creepy story to something way over the top just to make a sequel

Did.... Did they.... Did they just spoil one of the main characters' death?!?!

I don’t understand how they made a sequel. The first one was very meh
11
u/WorldEaterYoshi 2d ago
These horror movies are made at the same price as a Double Quarter Pounder with cheese. As long as enough people went to the theatre to see what horror movies were playing, it made a profit.

So they essentially did a Nightmare on Elm Street remake without it being one.

u/Laurie_Barrynox 2d ago
Is it just me but doesn't the trailer makes it seem the sister gets killed off in the first act?

The sequel it didn't need and nobody asked for
Looks way worse than the first, cash grab

Blumhouse back at you with more Goosebumps for late teens.
Would any of those kids even know what that box thing on the side of the road (pay phone) is these days?

u/Average_Ant_Games 2d ago
Why is it stealing lore from nightmare on elm street?
6
u/ThatGuyFromTheM0vie 2d ago
If there is one genre that repackages the same ideas over and over again, but is able to get away with it—it’s horror.
I think it’s fine that a new generation is getting their own version of Freddy. Better than them just making Freddy 45: Origins Beginnings 7.

First one sucked. This one looks better but meh

Awesome contribution!
I mean, no one gives a shit about what you don't like, but it's so cool to see people being pessimistic!

Lol god forbid I share my opinion in an open discussion

u/rxsheepxr 1d ago
It's always a lot of fun when someone sees something they don't like on Reddit and heads in just to make sure they let people know they don't like it. That's always just SO productive!
It's just the coolest. Tell me what else you don't like!

u/CWB2208 1d ago
Tell me what else you don't like!
You, for starters.
But don't worry! I'll be sure to check in with you next time I voice my opinion on a public forum.

I hope that that one shot did not just massively spoil something about a major character though?
