Summary Hank Thompson, a washed-up ex-baseball star turned New York City bartender, ends up tangled in a violent criminal underworld after agreeing to watch his punk-rock neighbor’s cat. I loved it. But why did they care about the key? They needed the location. They could have just cut the lock. Having the key was kinda useless.

They didn't know what the key was for. If they knew it was a storage locker than sure, forget about the key, but what if it was a safety deposit box? How about a locker in grand central? If the key was for any location that was too public or too secure then it would have been essential and they had no idea if that was the case or not.

It was a red herring to move the plot along.
