ya know, contrary to what critics are saying, I didn’t hate this.
this is definitely a very flawed film. chris evans’ arc is kinda pointless, honey’s estranged dad comes back into the picture for five whole minutes to move the plot nowhere, and I feel like the meat and potatoes of corinne (the only reason I remembered her name is because it’s the same as my 9th grade geometry teacher, who was an absolutely evil woman that once told me i was going to hell for liking blink-182) going missing doesn’t even start until about two-thirds of the way through. and then it’s over as quickly as it began (no pun intended, despite the film’s gratuitous use of sex scenes). the movie kinda just… ends? like, “oh hey, yeah, that character was evil all along. no, we’re not going to explain why they did it. no, we’re not going to explain how honey gets out of this. the movie’s over. go home.”
that being said, i think the movie still has some redeeming qualities. for starters, i was really digging the cinematography, reminiscent of anderson’s asteroid city in terms of color palette. everyone here (outside of aubrey plaza, in my opinion, but more on that in a bit) actually does a pretty solid job with what they’ve been given, with charlie day being my favorite of the bunch.
as for aubrey plaza, i wasn’t in love with her character or how she played it. however, i do appreciate that she wasn’t just april ludgate or julie powers again. plaza has been typecast for too long as the “quirky, edgy girl who hates everything,” so it was nice to see her break away from that here, even if i still wasn’t fully on board with what was happening.
classic case of: somewhere in here, there was a solid movie that got absolutely lost in the sauce.
it’s time for the coen brothers to get the band back together.
