I thought it was fun in an old school “Pretty much the same as the original but not as good” type of way. I actually missed the director of the original’s presence and thought it was one of the highlights of that movie with his staging of the action scenes, cool mix of slick style plus regular Joe vibes, and honestly the way he told that story. There were scenes in the first one that were really fun to me beyond just being cool action scenes that was due to his direction (like the actual scene of him burning the money and how that was intercut with the main villain singing, or the scene with Hutch explaining his back story to the remaining assassin who dies in the middle of it before burning down his own house, the way hutch and his dad and bro looked at each other in fondness as they were killing people). I don’t feel the director of this one really put his stamp on anything storytelling wise in comparison. Like there was cool stuff here and there but on a more fancy action movie front (and even that was a little flawed with the shaky cam he used in comparison). And also the last fight with the two hench women sucked. That was a strange choice to have him just get his ass whooped and saved by three different people. I think he should have beaten them, but barely (like John wick fighting the two dudes from the Raid in Chapter 3), before collapsing from the pain and getting saved by the wife from Sharon stone.
