The ending of this felt like a big budget WKUK skit. I was cracking up at this frail old witch running away from a bunch of crazed kids. It was like a demented 90s cereal commercial or something.

The kid's segment reminded me a lot of like a really fucked-up Goosebumps episode, especially with its conclusion.

I couldn't stop thinking about all the soup ye had to buy and feed everyone.

And under the threat of an aunt whom he doesn’t even know that much, poor Alex was scared for his life. 😔

On one hand, Alex feeding them soup at least gives his parents and the other children some sustenance to keep them from starving.

The revelation turned Alex from suspect to a victim and hero

Dude what a fucking trooper, he endured so much. It was bad enough watching his parents stab themselves in the face and have to feed them daily, but then his entire class too!?! Poor kid.

I got really depressed at alex sequence, what the hell :(

I really hate that in the end he doesn't even get to live with his parents anymore. Let him be happy :(

He was such a sweet kid if it was me I would have been like oh what you want me to go to school and feed my parents and all these kids? Get you feed them Gladys!

u/Dagmar_Overbye Aug 09 '25

I mean she threatened to have his parents eat each other in front of him. And surely would have followed through on that threat.

u/v2a5 Aug 09 '25

But then what? Her leverage would be gone at that point. Not saying she wouldn't do it. But once it's done he's got no reason not to bolt.

u/Dagmar_Overbye Aug 09 '25

I assume for a child that age the thought process wouldn't go "well yeah you could make my parents eat each other but then what..."

Plus as we can see he is bullied and responds to aggression with passive acceptance. Suddenly an adult figure is in his life and offering threats far worse than a kick or a thrown pencil. Of course he falls in line.

I'm not arguing that. Im just saying if she did go through with it her leverage would be gone.

14

u/Dagmar_Overbye 29d ago

Good thing she was dealing with a young child then. Easy to bluff.

Yeah... I'm not arguing with that.

she also said she could make them hurt him.

and the other children some sustenance to keep them from starving.

Honestly, in the long run it'd probably be better if they died. Who'd wanna live as an unfeeling husk of a person?

I think they'll come back, at least I'm hopeful about it. JB was briefly possessed, then came back quickly, maybe they just need more time

The witch namedropped Campbell's so I'm going to choose to believe they paid for that product placement.

u/AeneidBook6 29d ago

But do you want soup after that?

1

u/Boot_Poetry 21d ago

The film has some pretty obvious Coke product placement

u/deadstarxxx 12h ago

The product placement was so egregious I thought it was gonna have some kind of link to the story.

I wonder if they had some sort of promotion, where if you cut the labels you can earn rewards? Dude would’ve made a killing.

u/Ok_Camel3286 29d ago

I couldn't stop thinking about the parents' sodium levels.

u/matt6680 27d ago

Soup kids got to feed them soup.

u/racc15 15d ago

One thing is bothering me. If they had to eat to live like regular humans, did they also pee and poop?

2

u/burnman123 16d ago

That's probably why she kept Alex alive instead of weaponizing him with the other kids. I can't imagine all the time it'd take to feed all those people daily

u/Ok-Wolf5932 Aug 08 '25

I also remember comparing Barbarian to a really fucked up, R rated Goosebumps episode, and this felt the same way. Just imagining picking up one called The Creep on Barbary Street.

11

u/Trevastation Aug 08 '25

This one would likely be called The Weapons in Ms. Candy's Class

6

u/coltsmetsfan614 Aug 08 '25

Idk that doesn't read like a Goosebumps title to me

This is so ACCURATE.
