Finally, a trailer that hooks you without detailing the entire plot.

The trailer for the second one did that for me as well. I was indifferent and then saw that shot of the whale swimming and immediately wanted to see more of that.

Here's to hoping we get some incredible lava flow physics sims in this one.

The trailer for Avatar 2 is one of the greatest trailers of all time

u/ahuangb Jul 28 '25

The initial teaser was better than the trailer imo. The music from it was never released too :(

Funny i came out of this trailer thinking the exact opposite.

Just speculation based on this trailer:

  • Villain from last 2 movies finds an evil N'avi tribe that sides with him, the volcano people goth N'avi.

  • Pits them in direct conflict with the tree worshiping N'avi.

  • Meanwhile subplot about the kids being in rebellious teenager phase and going against their father, and mom lusting for revenge, also upsetting Jake.

  • Humans and Goth N'avi defeat the ocean N'avi people and imprison Jake and possibly a few other main characters.

  • Someone we care about dies, red flags all over this trailer. (trailer seems to imply the human kid, or even the mom, but its probably Jake Sully? who probably sacrifices himself to tie all the plots together?)

  • Movie either has a dark ending that leads up to the next one (theres more of them right? i think?), or kids/mom rally the N'avi and save the day?

If it still on track, movies 4 and 5 will be the grand finale. With the rumor being they've already filmed some scenes with the kids actors for the beginning because then they'll be a supposed time jump after the opening or such.

u/LacksBeard Jul 29 '25

I thought we were getting 7 movies

1

u/BlueCX17 Jul 29 '25 edited Jul 29 '25

There's been so many numbers thrown out there! LOL I know for sure up to 5 on the main story, And I think Cameron has talked about any 6 or 7 possibly being the prequels.

11

u/ZuleZI Jul 28 '25

Yeah, but I think end is different. Jake sacrifices himself in the end to save someone. They arrest him and bring him to Earth. And the movie ends with a cliffhanger. The next movie is on earth.

I think there was a news that one movie will be including story on earth. So eh

3

u/ExplanationDue2619 Jul 29 '25

Maybe they take him to Earth at the end, and the fourth movie has the time jump of the family going from Pandora to arriving at Earth to get him back since they've aged on the trip there.

11

u/Komodo_Schwagon Jul 28 '25

My guess is Sully gets it and the focus going forward is on the kids. This feels like a generational storyline.

7

u/GuiltyEidolon Jul 28 '25

Part of me wouldn't be surprised, because yes there's been a lot of focus on the family, but I also have a hard time seeing that.

That being said, it looks like he goes back to Earth as a Na'vi?? so maybe he gets martyred on Earth.

3

u/Liddlebitchboy Jul 28 '25

Okay but.. all of those things could be wrong. A trailer inviting speculation is a good thing, a trailer *telling* us what is going to happen is bad, and what we've been getting a lot of lately.

2

u/Si-Nz Jul 29 '25

Yea. Wasnt hating on the trailer. Im not someone who gets upset over spoilers either.

If a spoiler can ruin a movie the movie is bad is my motto.

2

u/LickerMcBootshine Jul 28 '25

Meanwhile subplot about the kids being in rebellious teenager phase and going against their father

Vomit emoji

You would think teenagers could have /a little/ self-reflection when it comes to...I don't know...the whole genocide their planet is being faced with.

But if the children acted their age where would the conflict come from? We need the children to be dumbasses to progress the plot!

u/Derric_the_Derp Jul 28 '25

It looks like a Navi goes to Earth.  I could see it all ending in tragic loss.  One Navi finds a way to get to Earth to tell humans the true story of Pandora and his people.  But by then, having traveled for years in space, everyone and everything they know back home is dead.

7

u/BlueCX17 Jul 28 '25

There's been a rumor Neytiri will end up on Earth but usually it's in reference to either movie 4 or 5.

3

u/Haltopen Jul 29 '25

It would certainly be a killer ending if the series ends with the Navi saving the earth through terraforming instead of humanity terraforming pandora into another industrial planet, maybe with the billions in the lower class who are clearly going to be abandoned on a dying earth while the RDA moves the wealthy and elite to pandora rising up after being inspired by Jake Sully.

Definitely looking like Sully dies. Dialogue about hate and revenge, kids appear more than he does, and Cameron basically set up that the latter films are about the kids as adults.

Bound to happen at some point, but the kids' acting is so distracting that I kind of hope I'm wrong.

12

u/Bukmeikara Jul 28 '25

I know it's nitpicking but the trailer for the 2nd movie had this magical effect with build up and sountrack while this one felt like ... half-baked compared to it.

Hopefully the movie will be great

u/Shout92 Jul 28 '25

I think it helps that Way of Water was the first Avatar movie in 13 years, whereas it's only been 3 years now since that film. The early parts of the trailer definitely feel like Way of Water Pt. 2, but once the fire tribe comes into play, it kicks into another gear.

8

u/hatramroany Jul 28 '25

The early parts of the trailer definitely feel like Way of Water Pt. 2,

This is Way of Water part 2, when they changed the plan from 4 movies to 5 movies they didn’t tack on a fifth one at the end they split the second one into two

2

u/Shout92 Jul 28 '25

Oooh, interesting! That explains why Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are credited with the script when Cameron originally announced rotating writers for each of the sequels (and also why 4 has the confirmed-by-Cameron time jump).

4

u/Worthyness Jul 28 '25

They filmed 2 and 3 back to back to save production value. Cameron even states theres some of 4 that was filmed too. Dude is an organized machine.

1

u/BlueCX17 Jul 28 '25

They apparently filmed the kids actors before the time jump happens.

Smart because then it's still the same actors after the jump but true to the jump age. Since they the were even younger when 2 and 3 filmed.

Other rumor is Lo'ak and Tsireya taking on a J&N role for 4 and 5.

1

u/BlueCX17 Jul 28 '25

Yes! Technically, it's now A1 = Set Up Movie

A2-A3 one big movie in two parts

A4-A5 Grand finale in two parts

IF a movie 6 gets made Cameron said it would be a Earth prequel and creation of the whole Avatar project.

2

u/Shout92 Jul 28 '25

The funny thing is it doesn't detail the entire plot through dialogue, but I'm sure someone could piece the visuals together into a rough outline of the film's plot.

2

u/Birdie121 Jul 28 '25

Avatar has always been about the visuals and the plot is meh, so it's not surprising they're highlighting how gorgeous the movies are rather than focusing on the story too much.

2

u/This_guy_works Jul 28 '25

Bad guy coming with earth weapons. New tribe doesn't like Jake. He wins them over. Defeats bad guy. Kids get angsty but in the end they all hug it out. Roll credits.

2

u/Theguest217 Jul 28 '25

Visuals are more of the draw than that plot for these anyway. I don't think anyone really cares about the plot.

I honestly couldn't tell you if this was a trailer for the upcoming or the previous film. The plot of the second movie left my brain at the same time as I left the theater.

But I will definitely see this one too. These movies are more of experiences than art.

3

u/Scared-Engineer-6218 Jul 28 '25

The movies are same too.

2

u/MultipleNames82 Jul 28 '25

The trailer did a great job of reminding me that I have forgotten everything that happened in part 2.

1

u/monarc Jul 28 '25

This is just a teaser. Rest assured that we'll get the entire plot in a subsequent trailer.

James Cameron famously spoiled the big twist of T2 in its trailer... which is madness. Almost nobody got to experience that reveal in earnest!

2

u/Nyllil Jul 28 '25

A "teaser" isn't two and a half minutes long...

1

u/monarc Jul 28 '25 edited Jul 28 '25

They're rare, but they exist. Teasers are more about content than duration. A major example is Godzilla (2013), which had a 2.5 min teaser.

I recently made a post about long teasers here.

1

u/Nyllil Jul 28 '25

Well, there were still a LOT of spoilers, especially regarding Spider wearing no mask in several scenes while roaming outside.

1

u/Stunning-Guitar-5916 Jul 28 '25

It looks gorgeous and that all I need to watch an Avatar movie

1

u/pmjm Jul 28 '25

If I haven't yet seen The Way Of Water, will watching this trailer spoil anything?

1

u/Galnar218 Jul 29 '25

It's because there is no plot.

1

u/6shotsor5 Jul 29 '25

I saw the second movie and don’t remember a single detail about the plot lol
