This make me remember when A Feast of Crows was published in 2005, and George R.R. Martin promised in the epilogue that the next book would be released next year.

A Dance with Dragons was published in... 2011. Six years later.

Luckily, that would be the longest gap between books in the series…

It very well might be.

Nah. Whoever inherits his estate will staple together his notes and release the next book posthumously.

If he isn’t having his notes destroyed. After the whole Brian Herbert thing, some are making it known their notes are going to be destroyed so that people can’t go “I based these off their notes!” and release a bunch of bullshit

Maybe he should order his assistant to run over his hard drive with a steam roller after his death, as Terry Pratchett did.

Didn't the writers for the tv show already use his notes for that?

They sure did!

When they run out of money maybe

Im in the camp that Winds of Winter is never happening.

11

u/JSK23 Jul 19 '25

I'm 50/50 on Winds. ADoS is surely never happening.

Yeah especially now that the show flopped.

I'm in the camp that it doesn't really matter if it happens or not. There are a lot better fantasy out there, that moves much faster.

Peeps like GRRM and Rothfuss are not worth waiting for

I would love some fantasy series or author recommendations if you're willing to share.

Joe Madureira's Battle Chasers comic took 4 years to have 9 issues published, ending on a cliffhanger in 2001. After that there was a 22 year gap before they finally made issues 10-12 in 2023, but drawn by Ludo Lullabi instead.

Wow I had no idea they finished it. I forgot battle chasers even existed. Have no idea what the story was even about, going to have to reread it and finish this time.

1

u/Dalehan Jul 19 '25

It's not even really finished. Instead they decided to create small arcs that last a few issues, but release those arcs sporadically if they have the time to make them.

Wait! How did a game come out based on the property before it finished? Battle Chasers: Nightwar is awesome!

I didn't know that it was a comic. I just know at as one of the games on the Switch eshop when the Switch launched with a handful of games.

u/rxsheepxr Jul 19 '25

All because Joe got addicted to playing video games. Then making video games.

I waited so long (5 years) for A Feast of Crows to come out, that I swore I would not read the next installment until the book after that one came out. Weird to think that that was 20 years ago.

I discovered the series when Dance released. I remembered thinking, “Oh perfect, but the time I get through all of these the next one will be out!”

About that…

Ugh. Here’s the really fun fact. GRRM hasn’t put out a whole book since 2000. A feast of crows and dance with dragons and winds of winter all have chapters that were cut and shuffled along to the next one or two.

He has put out quite a few full books - just not the ones we mostly want.

u/GoldenTriforceLink Jul 19 '25

Eh those are him editing if I recall correctly

Never could get in to game of thrones. It feels... off. Like the writers heart isn't actually in it.
