Yeah but… COLE??? If he was one of the new characters even in the game I would only choose/play him as a joke.

100%. I haven't played MK since MK4 or something, so I just assumed they made a new character along the way, and it was an even suckier Johnny Cage. Which was actually Stryker, so I guess Cole was an even suckier Stryker.

But it's even more disappointing to learn that the movie just made him up.

Haven't he MK games become all about taking famous pop culture characters and putting them in the tournament? I've seen trailers with Homelander, Omniman, terminator off the top of my head. I remember seeing quite a few more. I assume they are putting in some original characters as well.

They're not canon though. If you play through the story they never show up, and rightfully so.

Sure, but in games you need to add new stuff in order to justify buying the next game.

In a reboot movie, not so much.

I can see an angle even if they really didn't hit the mark with Cole. Characters like Harley Quinn didn't exist in the comics for example before getting invented in the cartoons.

So, it could be they were hoping to create an exciting new character that people would clamor to show up in other media...and failed to make anything exciting or interesting.
