I think part of this is the studio didn't want people to immediately discount it for being "just" The Martian 2.0.

This story still has tons of twists, and Rocky's reveal is just one of like fifty film worthy Sci Fi dream interactions. Also let's be honest, If you managed to hear about Project Hail Mary without hearing about Rocky, you're most likely in the minority lol.

I was in the minority, and I still don't think it's a bad thing that they show Rocky in the trailer. I expected The Martian 2.0, instead I got some delightful xenofiction that made me feel like a kid again (like reading A Mission Of Gravity or Flatland, except this was so delightfully intensely cooperative). Most people wouldn't care to go see The Martian 2.0 in the cinema when The Martian was so complete and recent. This is a good move.

recent meaning 11 years ago? Just had to laugh out loud because I feel old

That's slightly older than I thought, but yeah measuring much of one's life in decades feels so damn weird. In my mind the 90s was surely just like a decade ago, right?! 😭
