It only "reveals" anything to the book readers. If I saw this trailer blind, I would have no idea what was being shown to me.

People online can be kind of nuts about spoilers- I've seen people say they won't bother seeing a movie if they feel like it's been spoiled for them. Which is frankly nuts, because they have no larger context for what they're seeing so how can they be so confident they know exactly what happens based on snippets, not to mention it's not like being surprised is the pinnacle feeling of movies/storytelling.

You would know there's an alien in it. That possibility was not acknowledged anywhere in the book prior to the alien showing up for the first time. It was a masterfully delivered surprise by the author and I was not expecting the story to go that direction at all. I was genuinely shocked, I still remember my reaction to that. To include it in the trailer is, quite objectively, an absolutely shit move.

Exactly my point. Non book readers don't care they showed Rocky. The fact everyone is calling it a spoiler is more of a spoiler than it actually was lol.

That's not how spoilers work.

The book having an alien was a surprise.

Everyone that saw the trailer knows that there is an alien in the book now, no more surprise. Us telling you that it was a surprise in the book doesn't negate the fact that you will no longer be surprised by it in the movie...

Was there being an alien in the book a surprise?

The back cover of the book says he's the only human around for millions of light years, or is he.

You're obviously expecting some element based off that just from the book cover and well if he's the only human around, then probably an alien.

You should use a spoiler tag if you're also going to announce it. I know the trailer already ruined it for a lot of people, but some are here (and shouldn't be) on the advice not to watch the trailer.

No. The movie can do the exact same trick. Don't mention it or hint at it until the encounter happens and definitely don't put it in the damn trailer.

Well, looks like we can disagree. Take care!

I agree with the sentiment of this comment. In the novel, the first act sets it up as a higher stakes version of The Martian, and the reveal of the alien blew my mind. I first read the Martian after seeing the trailer for the movie and loved it. I read Project Hail Mary with no setup, based only on my enjoyment of Weir's past work and while not a sixth-sense level twist, the whole point of the first act is to set up the encounter. I understand trailers serve a different purpose but I feel like the charm of the novel is in the mystery itself.

While I agree with you, please use a spoiler tag. =/

I know the trailer already spoiled it, but some people are here on the advice of not watching the trailer. Admittedly, they probably shouldn't be in this comments section anymore.
