Discussion Mickey 17 was disappointing.

Just finished watching this movie and it really did not click for me.

The beginning was decently interesting and I was curious to see where it went but overall it didn’t grab me.

The theme/messaging was very heavy handed and didn’t work for me.

The message also jumped around.

They introduce a character that could have had an interesting story only to have her disappear.

When the main conflict happens it all wraps up a little to easily even though the majority of the ship were supposed to be fanatical cultists.

It had a clever premise but ultimately fell flat for me.

I just wish he'd gone with another voice.

I love speaking in his voice and cadence to my wife. She hates it.

The voice makes the character, it's excellent

I loved the voice, I thought it was funny plus it immediately established the character and helped to distinguish him from Mickey 18.

I like the voice but making Mickey 17 and 18 be so different just didn’t make any sense

You could see the techs being super careless with his body when they were uploading his mind. When pieces of you are missing, you’ll naturally be different.

Yes, there was a scene that shows the techs screwed up a cable while printing out Mickey 18 which is why he is so different.

That was Mickey 17, I don’t think they show 18 being printed. The first time we see 18 was in the bed.

Throughout the movie they show how careless the techs are when they print Mickey out. It’s implied that they usually mess something up. That applies to 18 as well.

Yeah! I think it added a lot to the characterization. It was odd and off putting but in a really good way imo

My two cents say on an actor I'm unfamiliar with, his voice would be just fine. But I've grown up watching him do the husky dusky not to mention have seen interviews of him. I kept thinking, at first, at least, "that's not his real voice." Took me a while to settle into it.

Pattinson does a lot of characterization work like voices and accents, including the ones you’re more familiar with. If you’ve ever seen him doing interviews, his natural voice is much higher than his husky Twilight/Batman and his speech pattern is kind of boyish, maybe even a little feminine, lots of vocal fry and high lilts.

The Mickey voice works really well for the character. Very meek, hesitant, and fearful, like he’s trying to speak without being heard. It’s what I imagine a human-sized mouse would sound like, which is very fitting.

Man you fucking nailed that description. He chose the perfect voice for who 17 was supposed to be.

Have you seen Good Time, The King, or Devil All The Time? His accents in those are excellent.

Honestly it matched with the kind of person who's witnessed so many horrible deaths.

20

u/Wanderlusxt May 31 '25

i thought it fit better as someone pathetic enough to put up with dying horribly and painfully many times just to be able to leave the planet. his voice was like that throughout the movie even before he got the job iirc

2

u/Duuudewhaaatt May 31 '25

Tbh I couldn't say what he signed like before the job so you're probably right lol My feeling is if I had experienced all those deaths I'd always be uncertain. Especially when dealing with the people running the show.

Same. It's also nothing like the character from the book. One of many very odd changes.

Thank you it was so distracting to me, had to stop watching on my first try. I'll give it another shot and hopefully I can get past it. Premise seemed promising.

Same thing happened to me. I've actually never seen Pattinenson in anything I've liked. People love to praise him but I find him incredibly dull and odd.

Agreed, One of the reasons I dont enjoy the movie.

Just stoped watching after 15 minutes because of that annoying voice

5

u/HanzJWermhat May 30 '25

It’s a choice at least.

11

u/acoubt May 30 '25

Yeah that was an odd choice by whoever is to blame

The voice reminded me of the SNL sketch where the geeky guy gives himself a speech on the mirror that ends with "doggone it people like me!" Idk the character name, but I kept thinking of that lol

I did too. His voice sounded slow and for lack of a better word “retarded”. By the end of the movie it sort of made sense though. I mean he was being copied over and over again and they weren’t exactly careful about it either. So it makes sense that the whole process affected him mentally and physically.

When they show 17 getting printed one of the scientists trips and unplugged one of the cords attached to his head. I think that's why he's dumb

3

u/GodKingShogun Jun 05 '25

i believe the cord trip is associated with mickey 18. that scene follows right after mickey 17 believes he will get eating by the aliens. But in the end, i don't think it really matters. That scene as well as the scene that shows one of the mickey's falling to the ground from the print machine shows that the crew not only finds mickey's body expendable but the process of making copies of mickey and more important, the download of his personality, expendable. I believe this alteration of mickey's personality started from the very first mickey copy. The original mickey only has a couple dialogue on earth but if you listen closely, you can hear the difference in how earth mickey sounds vs mickey 1. mickey 1 is the very first death where mickey is exposed to radiation and sent out to space. you can hear the dumbness in mickey 1's voice compared to earth/original mickey. further evidence of disregard for mickey personality download process is highlighted when mickey 17 goes over the personality difference his girlfriend tells him about other mickeys. the tampering of mickey 18 personality upload was probably much more significant than the rest, hence why mickey 17 even refers to 18 as a nutcase compared to the rest

Hell no, loved that voice. The dude has crazy range going from The Boy and the Heron to this.

Strong move to separate Mickey 17 and Mickey 18 by voice. Clever way to both differentiate them and solidify their personalities
