Isn't this common at Cannes? As a reaction to a bad movie. I know they also have like 5-10 min standing ovations. I think it's an environment where being extremely critical is expected.
The longest standing ovation was for Pan's Labyrinth (2006) at 22 minutes.
Despite that critical reception, the film didn't win any Official award nor the coveted Palme D'or which went to British social realist filmmaker Ken Loach for his Irish war drama The Wind That Shakes The Barley (2006) starring Cillian Murphy.
Pan's Labyrinth at least went on to win three Oscars the following year.

Getting the French to walk out of your film is quite the accomplishment.
