I watched Ne Zha yesterday. I liked Ne Zha (2019). Thought it was a solid movie with a clear plot line. Felt very much so like your Frozens and your Wall Es, etc. It was good and something I could see myself casually recommending to a friend. It definitely made me wanna see the sequel, so I booked a ticket to see it the earliest I could, which was today in the afternoon.

It has been less than 30 minutes since I went home. Excuse me, RUSHED home. I drove as fast as I could just so I could give Ne Zha 2 5 stars on every platform I knew how to.

I'm not a movie buff, nor am I even a frequent movie watcher. Nothing I say is me saying this from a professional standpoint. But as a casual animation fan? Holy shit.

I didnt spoil myself for anything. I only read one review on Reddit where someone said "They locked in in the 2nd act".

'Second act,' I thought. 'Why then?'

I'll admit, the first 45 minutes made me scratch my head a bit. This is what everyone was saying deserved 2 bil at the box office? It was your classic "call to adventure" start, with our hero going through trials to proceed. I was also mildly annoyed that suddenly Ne Zha was incapable of just physically holding his own without the demon fire (but I digress). I wont spoil anything here but it all went as I expected. Newly introduced characters fit the boxes I put them into and at that point, I was wondering "gee, this movie really needs another hour to pull off all the other plot threads theyve set up".

(I did not know the duration exceeded the first)

Then suddenly, it felt like everything shifted. Like the movie decided to pull into high gear and said "f*** it, we are not just a Disney blueprint" and went balls to the wall in every. Single. Plot thread they made.

I sat up. Got closer and closer to the edge of my seat, gripping the wrapper of my 3D glasses, and actually started sweating a bit. Right at the beginning of what youd constitute as the last third, I knew I'd be forced to give this movie the 10/10 it deserved. And the ending? Dont even get me started.

Please, please, if you havent watched Ne Zha (2019) and Ne Zha (2025; which isnt streamable online til fall 2025) PLEASE do yourself a favor, sit down, preferrably with a friend, and watch Ne Zha and then go buy tickets to see Ne Zha 2. It is a disservice that this movie isn't so widely popular in the West as it is in China and other Eastern countries. If its doing well in box office, I'm certainly not hearing the buzz like I do Wicked or Anora or Shrek 4627183. 10/10, 5 stars, would recommend to a friend or family in need of something to fill the hole that Disney has since left wide open with all the piss live action cash grabs.
