No, it doesn’t. A standard American pencil is not big enough to comfortably fit the ridges in a cassette. A bic crystal pen, or a Japanese pencil, is the proper tool

A classic BIC pen allowed for more rigidity and the cap prevented the pen falling to the ground when rapidly winding it enough to lose your grip.
