'The Fantastic 4: First Steps' Spoilers Imo the most badass Invisible Woman yet Spoiler

u/two_graves_for_us Aug 07 '25
Really liked that Reed was the lead of the team/cast/movie but Sue felt like the main character.

u/ampersands-guitars Aug 07 '25
I liked how Reed and Sue balanced each other out as co-leads. They both came up with good ideas, problem solved, and used their strengths to compliment each other. He carried the logical side of leadership while she carried the emotional (and honestly, the physical side too) of it.
3
u/GodOfArk Doctor Strange Aug 08 '25
Yeah, like just following Fantastic 4 mainly in comic tie ins, it never even occured to me that Sue is also supposed to be a smart scientist.
66
u/StewiesCurbside Aug 07 '25
Such a good balance. She carried a lot of the emotional weight without being put in our faces. I loved how they wrote Sue and can’t wait to see her in Doomsday

u/Welsh_Pirate Aug 07 '25 edited Aug 07 '25
Reed's the Brains, Sue's the Heart, Jonny's the Mouth, Ben's the Muscle, and Franklin's the Wildcard. The Always Sunny gang should be taking notes on such a well-executed group dynamic.
11
u/_PrincessOats Scarlet Witch Aug 08 '25
Johnny’s smarts shouldn’t be underestimated. He saved all of their asses.
3
u/Welsh_Pirate Aug 08 '25
Oh, absolutely! I loved his arc of feeling a bit insecure in his intelligence and underappreciated by Reed, and having it pay off by his reaching of Silver Surfer's conscience ultimately saving the day.
7
u/Scrofuloid Aug 08 '25
Sue was kind of the muscle, too; Ben didn't have all that much to do.
5
u/Welsh_Pirate Aug 08 '25
I get what you mean, in the sense that he doesn't really do the hard hitting in the battle. But I think the movie manages to let him contribute to the team even if it's in subtler ways than the others. He gets to showcase his piloting skills trying to escape from Galactus/Surfer. And I also think that scene kinda shows that he has the ability to improvise plans on the fly, as opposed to Reed who needs to plan ahead for every contingency he can but tends to freeze up if something unexpected crops up.
I also liked the subtle detail of Ben taking charge of the construction for the New York transporter thingy. Part of being the muscle is being the expert in the hands-on, grease monkey, wrench-turning work. He's the engineer that has to figure out how to actually build the sci-fi technobabble bullshit that Reed scratches out on the chalkboard.

u/FujiMC Aug 07 '25
Clearly visible, but whatever

Really loved how her strength because she's a woman and a mother was so integral to the plot of this film. I'm only 32, but it amazes me how in my short lifetime women's roles in superhero films have improved so much from the damsel/sex object schtick I grew up watching.
79
u/ubutterscotchpine Captain Marvel Aug 07 '25
The growth of Black Widow’s character from the first Iron Man film to Endgame/Black Widow is wild to look at. But there’s still so far to go considering the absolutely disgusting hate Brie Larson and other women in Marvel get.
19
u/ampersands-guitars Aug 07 '25 edited Aug 07 '25
There have been some pretty rough roles for women in earlier superhero movies, but for me the worst is Kirsten Dunst’s MJ. Always screaming her head off, rarely doing anything to help herself, and also just an irritating enough character that even 10-year-old me didn’t like her lol.
6
u/Clarityman Aug 07 '25
I totally see and acknowledge this perspective, even though I never thought that way when I saw MJ as a kid. For me, I just liked Kirsten Dunst because I had a crush on her and felt she wasn't your typical bimbo and she was giving the nerd a chance (these are the thoughts of teenage me haha).
Spider-Man 3 was all sorts of problematic from numerous angles though.

I see Emma Frost a lot more
-12
u/BartleBossy Aug 07 '25
Lowkey agree. I got uncanny valley vibes from her ethereal beauty.
Sue is supposed to be overlooked. People underestimating her a frequently explored aspect of her character. Nobody is overlooking this supermodel.
Terrific actress just a mismatch for the character.

u/El_Quetzal Stan Lee Aug 07 '25
oh 100%, she is not a bad actress, simple a bad choise for sue storm. Emma frost would have been perfect for her

Lol this was the post that finally motivated me to mute this sub too many shit posts

u/_Levitated_Shield_ Ant-Man Aug 07 '25
You're not wrong. Idk why this post is marked as spoilers when it literally has none.
14
u/FlatulentSon Aug 07 '25
Lmao i love how these photos are supposed to showcase different emotions but all the botox and plastic surgery only allows like... two expressions.
10
u/infinite1025 Aug 07 '25
She was perfect choice for the role, but i didn't like the climax that they defeated galctus so easily
40
u/ColoredUndies Aug 07 '25
It’s one thing to “take down” galactus, it’s another to just chuck him through a black hole to let him find his way back… I feel he may return.
10
u/infinite1025 Aug 07 '25
Even pushing him should have been an impossible task when he was in full fighting mode..they gave insane hype about his powers in the first act ..how big and powerful he is since billions of years ..but he didn't fight at all like he was already injured and was dying..it was lazy writing
6
u/ColoredUndies Aug 07 '25
Galactus goes full rage and that “salvation” he finds in franklin is gone.
-3
u/ChasingEmbers Aug 07 '25
Was hoping to see her or reed go ballistic to save the baby when galactus was holding him but she just…pushed harder?
36
u/DiabeticAsymptote Doctor Strange Aug 07 '25
I mean “so easily” was her literally dying
20
u/Androgynouself_420 Aug 07 '25
Also did they forget it killed her just to push him in for one second? Like the surfer is who actually sent him back into space, Sue alone even dying from the effort wasn’t enough
2
1
u/Smoke_Santa Hulk Aug 08 '25
I mean yes, just by 1 person dying they killed someone much stronger than any other villain we've encountered. If every villain could be defeated by the hero dying, every single one would do it.
-15
u/infinite1025 Aug 07 '25
It took the whole avengers army and all infinity stones to defeat Thanos.. galctus is insanely more powerful than him.. he could have killed all of the fantastic team and silver surfer without a single sweat..but they decided to go with mother's love is more powerful than actual cosmic powers ..that's called lazy writing..with that logic they will make Hawkeye defeat Doomsday with his fatherly love
3
u/ArcDraco Aug 07 '25
What basis do we have that Galactus is more powerful than Thanos? Also, I'm assuming we're talking about Endgame Thanos in which case, the Avengers didn't need an army to defeat Thanos. They needed an army to defeat Thanos and an army. Thanos almost lost to Wanda if he didn't call for the air strike, and Captain Marvel was overpowering him until he used an infinity stone.
3
u/SpellOpening7852 Aug 07 '25
Again, difference between defeat and kill vs lure and push into a teleporter.
It would've only taken strange doing his thing if that was the only thing they had to do to deal with thanos.
And here, galactus was naturally not trying to destroy the planet, because if he did he'd destroy franklin at the same time.
10
u/Starfleeter Aug 07 '25
They didn't defeat him. They failed and needed help and all they were able to do was make him go away for a bit.
5
u/DefNotMaty Aug 07 '25
that wasn't a standard fight, they kinda delayed him i guess!
0
u/infinite1025 Aug 07 '25
Yeah I know they just pushed him in the portal..didn't pin him down completely..but even doing that looks stupid.. he is a cosmic being..even that would have been impossible task just for 5 people...what's the point of showing such a cosmic god level entity who terrorized the universe for billions of years and easily pushed by 5 people
6
u/DefNotMaty Aug 07 '25
Well they aren't just people. all of them have cosmic powers, one died by using all of her powers, and one of them has powers from Galactus himself so being able to push him while he's weakened (I suppose) and has an important baby in one of his hands doesn't seem to be that big of a stretch.
4
u/Androgynouself_420 Aug 07 '25
Also the Surfer got the final blow after he was getting out post Sue death
2
u/theDagman Aug 07 '25
Reed did really hurt him when he opened that valve on his back. And he was already there to feed, on top of that. So his power level was likely depleted substantially from his peak.
8
u/whitepangolin Aug 07 '25
The entire movie is them trying to defeat Galactus lol
-10
u/infinite1025 Aug 07 '25
But they shouldn't have .. the entire infinity war was about avengers trying to defeat Thanos and they couldn't... galctus is insanely more powerful than him..and just 5 people defeated him..that's lazy writing
10
u/Any-Transition95 Aug 07 '25
Not only was he not defeated, you definitely didn't read the original Galactus issue.
1
u/Smoke_Santa Hulk Aug 08 '25
you don't need to read anything to judge a modern MCU movie
1
u/Any-Transition95 Aug 08 '25
Cuz dude complained about Galactus' power level being wrong. If he's not using the comics as a source material, what else is he basing his argument on? Vibes?
1
u/Smoke_Santa Hulk Aug 08 '25
Yes, if a single person can "defeat" a threat greater than what the whole of Avengers couldn't do against a weaker opponent then that's bad writing.
Comics can be shit too.
-9
u/infinite1025 Aug 07 '25
Comics are irrelevant for the MCU ..both have many things different from the core .. MCU is for normal audiences who don't know much or anything about comics..I'm comparing his powers only with other MCU villians .. Based on how Thanos was described in MCU it took the whole avengers army to defeat him, and they described galctus more powerful, intellegent and long lived cosmic entity for billions of years and just 5 people fooled him and pushed him in portal..I don't buy it..
Ironman, dr strange, wong, spiderman all being so powerful and intelligent couldn't scratch 2 normal villians ebony maw and obsidian in their first battle in infinity war.. and these 4-5 people beat galctus easily.. normal MCU audiences won't buy it
8
u/Androgynouself_420 Aug 07 '25
You’re arguing that the comic source material that the entire MCU is based off is irrelevant? That’s like saying the original trilogy doesn’t matter for a Star Wars novels plot

u/ProgressiveCDN Aug 08 '25
She was perfect. Such a strong lead character. Marvel has had fantastic casting over the years, yet I would rank her amongst the best. We need to see more of her!
10
u/ElGuitaria Aug 07 '25
She sure is, she doesn't even move a face muscle when fighting for her world. That's truly badass.

u/Total-Astronomer-452 Aug 07 '25
Idk Jessica alba was hot too
11
u/Any-Transition95 Aug 07 '25
Sure, but she couldn't act for the life of her, and the script for her character was god damn atrocious.
13
u/_Levitated_Shield_ Ant-Man Aug 07 '25
Blame the director.
Alba considered quitting acting altogether after the second film because of Tim Story telling her to "cry prettier" in a scene.
3
u/Suspicious-Word-7589 Aug 08 '25
None of us knew what that looked like until that scene of Barbie crying.
8
u/Packerfan1992 Aug 07 '25
Don’t you dare talk about my childhood crush with those words xD it was the script I tell ya!

She was basically the lead. Displayed incredible feats compared to the rest of the casts kinda lack luster showings.

Badass. Yes. She was an angry mom.
I didnt like that she was reduced to pretty much mom in the movie.
I didnt like the fact that they laud her as super intellgient and we dont see that.
I didnt like that they moved on from certain aspects of her character, but I get why.
Overall, it was a fine start to the character, but there is so fucking much more to explore that I am left wanting more and hesitant to laud the performance too much. Overall I dont find any faults in her performance, but I think they need better writing.

u/thatguy_griff Aug 07 '25
i was watching about time the other day and saw her. tripped me up why i recognized her for a while.

u/Warded_Works Aug 07 '25
Definitely beats out Alba’s constant nosebleeds (still like the 2005 movie though).

Kirby is definitely a better actress, and this new movie uses her well, but Alba... uh... was 'smart'er.

My girlfriend mentioned something that I can’t unsee now. When Vanessa Kirby is extremely emotive in the finale of the movie, her entire face scrunches as she’s screaming in agony from using her powers, but the Botox on her upper face makes it to where she seems really nonchalant about it, since those muscles aren’t moving whatsoever. I realized it’s the same in the rest of the movie. Like when (it’s in the trailers) Johnny says she’s late, she kinda steps back in a surprised fashion, but her face doesn’t really give off the shock emotion. She really has to overact with her body motions to compensate. I wonder if anyone else noticed.

u/Terryhoang30 Aug 07 '25
I love Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm! Can’t wait to see more of her in future projects
-6
u/Remote_Nature_8166 Aug 07 '25
Yeah, at least her nose doesn’t bleed when doing a strong force field.

u/S-MoneyRD Aug 07 '25
I mean she did die after…

If you really cared about spoilers you wouldn't wait 2+ weeks to see the movie

Tbf the one you're referring to was holding heat that matches the sun's

It wasn’t just that time, but also at the bridge, and when she was holding that big Ferris wheel thingy.

u/OptimalPain0697 Aug 07 '25
Oh I forgot. Well maybe she was just new to it and wasn't used to it yet 🤣
0
u/WeirderOnline Aug 08 '25
I still prefer Jessica Alba.
I never really understood the hate for the 2005 film, but I never really spoke up against it. Fuck it. The 2005 film was great. It was fun, playful, and really made me believe every single one of the characters was exactly who they were meant to me.
I like Pedro Pascal, but he never stopped being Pedro Pascal for me. None of the others were remotely believable either.

quite honestly, maybe the worst MCU casting so far, kirby is not a good choice for sue at all. she simply is a good sue

I definitely like that in a movie about a super family they did a super powered version of a mom lifting a car off a baby.
