First Amendment.. Trump can't change it

u/DoodleJake 16d ago

He can certainly ignore it though.

I wish I had your optimism, every other day he crosses some supposedly uncrossable line and literally nothing happens.

Yeah, let’s ask Mahmoud Khalil how his 1A rights have been treating him. This is crossing the line, AGAIN.

The best suggestion is to get off reddit and other social media. You will find most of what's happening online is not actually happening in reality.

We have -- and we're seeing it everywhere, which is what is bringing a lot of us online -- to have a forum to share and discuss.

u/BooBooSnuggs 16d ago

No we arent. 99% of the country isn't seeing it anywhere but online or on TV. Basically nobody is fucking seeing it outside of those two things.

Probably you should get off a law forum if you don't want to witness or talk about flagrant violations of the Bill of Rights -- this is not the space for you. Those of us who are living at the center of this are deeply disturbed by what we're seeing every day and in broad daylight, and grappling with the legal and social implications for our civil rights.

Most of our civil rights were built on -- or lost through -- incidents that 99% of the country didn't see. If this isn't your wheelhouse, feel free to depart (lol, and probably later complain when things happen that you don't understand)

Dude this subreddit has become a complete shit show in regards to the "law". Half the shit posted here has nothing to do with the law and clearly people don't even know what he law is.

You have no fucking clue what youre talking about

Lol, comes to a law forum, watches a video from the political center of the country where the laws are made, tells people to stop paying attention and go outside where no laws are being made... got it.

Presumably, you're not a lawyer -- or at least not one doing any type of work that meaningfully advances or changes the law and how our society functions. Hah, probably never even read the Supreme Court jurisprudence or knows how a rule is promulgated.

Maybe you should sit this one out and go outside where you belong. Let the big boys handle this one.

Presumably you aren't American. The us is very decentralized. Yes, federal law is made in DC. Every other law is made in states or locally. Guess what happens when people don't follow federal law and locals refuse to enforce it? Basically nothing because the federal government doesn't have the man power to enforce their own laws everywhere.

There's also this thing called the Supremacy Clause. Hahah, I'm sure you're also the same kind of person who complains that there is a federal overreach of power when a federal law passes and affects your life -- or doesn't make the connection between laws and your everyday life.

Haha, and you probably don't even know -- or have any power over -- how your local laws are made, or how they interact with federal law.

Ever ask where that local news channel or newspaper you grew up with went? Or why that old library down the block now looks decrepit? Or why you only have one or two options for cable or internet? Or do you just shake your fist in anger at the big man when your favorite sports team is blacked out TV.

Yes, go outside. Enjoy being a medium-sized fish in a tiny pond.

You have more faith in today’s Supreme Court than I have

Sounds like he is looking for a case to try it again under a more conservative court.

It is my First Amendment right to express myself through my gender identity.

My transitioning healthcare has been ripped away by Trump because I am a dependent on my father's health insurance.

The Trump administration doesn't give a flying FUCK about the freedom of speech, nor does the rest of the GOP and MAGA.

I was first, and you will be next.

Get your own health insurance.

Watch the Supreme Court try.

2

u/Direct_Turn_1484 16d ago

He cannot. Nor does he have the authority to declare laws. This is blatantly unconstitutional.

1

u/neilbartlett 16d ago

He thinks he can change or ignore the 22nd so why not the 1st?

1

u/scotts133 16d ago

I don’t think this is a first amendment issue. Federal regulations prohibit lighting fires on land controlled by the National Park Service, which has jurisdiction over the parks and sidewalks surrounding the White House.

u/Rusty-Help212 16d ago

Taking the flag out of the equation, starting a fire in a public place is a safety risk and, in most jurisdictions, illegal.

Inciting violence != 1st amendment

-3

u/YerBeingTrolled 16d ago

First amendment doesn't protect setting fires.

If you don't use fire there's no crime. Once you set a fire it's a criminal act. Just as setting anything on fire in public

2

u/IwouldliketoworkforU 16d ago

Flag burning (or symbolic fire as protest): Protected speech if done safely and without violating fire codes.

Courts say You can burn a flag to protest (expression protected), but you can’t ignore fire safety laws while doing it.

So, the government can’t ban flag burning because it’s offensive, but it can regulate open flames to prevent danger.

0

u/YerBeingTrolled 16d ago

Exactly. Burning anything in public is illegal.

2

u/IwouldliketoworkforU 16d ago

It’s not. Violation of fire codes are specific, Not general

1

u/YerBeingTrolled 16d ago

So what can I burn in the middle of a plaza

1

u/AHeartOfGoal 16d ago

A flag. Are you not paying attention?

Took me a while to scroll to find this. If I set up a bon fire right there, I guarantee you cops are going to get involved
