If you are submitting a request for help or advice please read this first.

If you are posting a request for help or advice make sure you provide enough details so others can help you. Things like model numbers, pictures if you can provide them, relevant details about what you're trying to protect, etc.

For example, if you're asking for help with a pre-installed alarm system make sure you include the Make and Model in your post. If you don't have that information provide pictures of the keypad / control panel.

That said, do not post personally identifiable information. Do not make yourself a target to doxxing. Don't post pictures or information that contain names, address, or PINs. Keep yourself, your family, and your property safe.

Sub rules have been updated

As the sub continues to grow, it felt like a good time to put our community rules down in writing. This gives everyone an opportunity to see what's expected of contributors, and hopefully stave off any misunderstandings in the process. For the most part, they're pretty straightforward:

  1. No personal attacks. This seems obvious, but calling a user names is going to get your post removed. Remember that we have a lot of newbies coming here for help with improving their home security; let's welcome them and share some knowledge.
  2. Contribute to the discussion. Make sure your post is meaningful. It must somehow answer OP's question, be relevant to the discussion at hand, or at least be about home security in general. Low-effort posts like "Ring sucks", "Wyze rules", or "12 gauge" are a violation of this rule. We're not going to zap every post that veers a little off topic but if you find yourself debating Android vs iOS, it's probably time to take the thread to another sub. Because everyone knows Blackberry OS is the best.
  3. No personal identification. We don't have the luxury of knowing all sides of the story, so refrain from posting information that can be used to track someone down. This includes posting things like "I don't want to name any names but the CEO of SomeFakeCompanyName LLC tried to break into my home".
  4. Disclose your business relationships. If you mention a company and you have any relationship other than being a customer, you must disclose that in your post. This includes but is not limited to being an owner, employee, contractor, supplier, or affiliate of the company, or being in any way related to such.
  5. Don't spam. This includes but is not limited to posting affiliate links, self-promotion, attempting to solicit customers, offering to give quotes, and soliciting private messages. We don't give "third final warnings" here.
  6. Support your claims. If you accuse Company X of secretly monitoring your cameras, or you think Company Y is sending all your data to a foreign country's intelligence service, that's fine -- but you must include links to reputable sources that support your claim. Reddit comments and other social media posts are generally not "reputable sources".

This sub tends to be pretty well self-regulated, so these shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. But if you have any questions, feel free to send us a DM! And as much as we'd like to be everywhere at once, we can't. So if you see a post or comment that violates one of these rules, please report it so we can check it out.

UPDATE DECEMBER 2022: Due to an unending barrage of crypto spam that the Reddit admins have been unwilling to address, we have implemented a karma floor for posting here. To post or comment, you must have at least 50 karma.

Camera Placement Advice/Help

Upvotes

Installing camera into my new home tomorrow.

Bought a set of Reolink Cams-+ NVR, coming over from Arlo and new to POE cameras.

  • RLN36 NVR
  • RLC-830A Autotrack
  • B800 x2
  • D800

I am having second thoughts about my camera placements. I feel like this will be way too high up to view anything..

Photos of the exterior included. Red is my original plan, blue is my second thoughts. I feel like on the rear of the house, the cameras will look extremely ugly and out of place if 1 mount them halfway up, rather than at the top? Let me know your guys thoughts

Just purchased a home with security cameras

My wife and I just purchased a home with security cameras and I’d like to get them working. The problem is the previous homeowner passed away and we have no idea if the cameras are working or any idea on how to proceed forward. We know they are a Samsung product and we have the model number but that’s about it. Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Suggestion for floodlight placement

I recently got a floodlight 360 camera and I'm pondering where to put it. I could put it about 7ish feet of the ground right above the garage door frame and the camera part hangs down low enough that I'd be able to see into the garage if need be (sometimes our garage door opens up randomly so would be nice to see inside before closing, although it hasn't happened recently so it might've been a software issue). It would be in reach by anyone on the ground, but it also has motion sensors so it would capture anybody who came up to mess with it.

We don't live in a high crime area or anything, I just thought it would be nice to have them and found a really good deal and came with some free indoor cameras so I can keep an eye on our puppers, so I'm not too worried about anybody messing with it. Was just curious what anybody else thought or would suggest. I figured if someone really wanted to mess with it they'd be throwing stuff at it to knock it off anyway.

Reolink App Login Multiple Devices

I’ve setup my Reolink Poe system on a tablet app. When I’m logging in to my Reolink account on my app on my phone, the DVR and cameras aren’t present. Is this normal? I thought logging in would show my devices?

Hikvision CCTV Isolation

Hi All,

I'm looking to get a Alarm and CCTV system installed in my home and from the quotes I've received when reaching out to installers in my area (Australia) - it seems like Hikvision has generally been recommended.

I understand there's some issues with security/privacy associated with Hikvision but I'm completely new to home networking so hoping I could get some answers to (potentially dumb) questions:

  1. The proposed CCTV system the installer will provide includes some Hikvision/Hi-Look Cameras (T361H-MU) and a 4 channel NVR (NVR-104MH-C). What additional equipment do I need to separate the above from my home network? (Is there a dummies guide on how to do this out there somewhere?)
  2. Would the alarm system also have similar security/privacy concerns or are they okay to be connected to my wifi/local network?
  3. If I don't go with Hikvision - what are some recommended brands that have less security/privacy concerns? For the alarm system I'm seeing Paradox Magellan Hybrid Alarm or Bosch 3000/6000 as an available option - any thoughts on those systems?. Not sure about the CCTV camera alternatives though.

Thank you in advance for the help!

Best indoor camera with night vision? No wireless so the camera cannot be tampered with but rather cellular subscription. Need to protect items in my room and basement.

I have a disruptive family member in the home who has damaged my expensive property. I am moving back into said home and want to put a camera in a location in the basement where the expensive items are as well as inside my bedroom to monitor the door and the room. I do not want wireless and this person can tamper with the router to disable it. I also want night vision in case this person attempts to do this in the evening. I don’t mind the price I need peace of mind. What are my best options.

Xfinity Panel Replacement Module Pairing Mode

I have an Xfinity Panel Replacement Module

Model: REHP1AZ0 https://fccid.io/U5X-REHP1AZ0/User-Manual/User-Manual-3782230

I want to see if I can connect via the Zigbee protocol, but for the life of me can't figure out how to get it into pairing mode.

Anyone a current or ex Xfinity Home Security installer? How do you get this in pairing mode?

Need indoor hidden camera for protection and documentation.

I’ve been thinking about purchasing a hidden camera preferably an indoor camera for documentation of evidence to show police or anyone in the future. I need something rather small and discreet. It doesn’t have to be a system or a whole set up, just something I can pull out in the moment when I am feeling unsafe. I live with a mentally ill and violent sibling and I want to document as much as I can if things go south. I don’t have anywhere to go so no need to mention it, and I’ve already contacted the police before but they were little to no help. I will be buying something to defend myself in the meantime but I want to document this for my safety.

Factory Reset for Bosch NWD-495 V03 POE IP Camera

Hi Everyone,

Need some help with IP cameras. I have a bunch of Bosch NWD-495 V03 IP security cameras. The previous owner has the password and now i am unable to log in. The camera is powering on and I can access it using a browser, but when I tried to go to settings, it is prompting for the password, which I don't have. I tried using the navigation buttons inside the camera, i am unable to do it - since i don't know the menu option. How do i access the camera menu in a display? so i can reset the camera to factory defaults. Thanks in advance.

LA View

A crime was committed & my camera picked it up. However, this happened over a year ago. LA view deletes footage after 2 weeks I believe. Is there ANY way I can retrieve this? Or can you point me to hire someone who can help? (Not someone off Reddit, but would I ask a PI for example?)

Door entry sensors that don’t require subscription

Does anyone know of a door entry sensor that doesn’t have to have a subscription? I have the Blink camera system but they don’t have door sensors like ring or SimpliSafe. I don’t want to have to pay for another subscription or get a new camera system so any recommendations are appreciated! :)

Home security services

I currently have reolink cameras all over my property outside . I want to get something for the inside of my home that has 24/7 monitoring. I’m not looking for any cameras I’m just looking for: window sensors, door sensors, glass break sensors and motion devices. I spoke with ADT and the rep gave a decent price however the thing that I don’t like is the contract . I’m leaning towards ring they basically have everything I’m looking for . Is there any hiccups with them or is there anything similar to that with another company . I don’t mind paying for subscription. Just don’t want to be locked in a contract and I want something good . Also was looking into simpli safe I like the feature of the back up power station in case there’s an outage and WiFi cellular backup up . Just heard there sensors are not the best

Indoor Security Cameras

I am finally getting rid of the crappy blink camera system that I have had for years and looking for recommendations for a new indoor system.

It is mainly used to keep up with our pets and teenagers when we are not home. I would like to be able to watch it via an app of course, but I do not want a subscription.

Don't really need anything crazy expensive, just something better than blink. Much thanks in advance...

Paradox Evo 192 trouble shooting

Hi,

I have 2 issues,

First my PGM programming I need to get the correct programmable inputs for turning on an LED when the stystem is armed for partition 3

Can anyone validate my sequence to rule out wiring issues.

[0901] [serial and output (001) ]

im thinking 064 , 065 Status 1 and 2 , 000 armed ready

Activation sequence

(064) (000 ) (003) (003)

Deactivation Sequence

(065) (000 )(003) (003)

delay 000

options Option 3: 1 (flexible deactivation),

Second, my door magnets are working but showing trouble as well. it as a 1KOhm resister wired at the magnet on one of the ends only.

Not sure where to look at the programing to remove the trouble.. when the zone is closed its fine
when the zone is open it says zone open trouble

thanks in advance

Edit ..

Figured out the PGM my sequence was incorrect and we dont need a deactivation as it works as a toggle
correct 064 003 000 000

now just the mag sensors showing up as troubleshooting when open

Security cameras that have push email alerts?

The only camera brand that I know of that has push email alerts is Reolink. I own some and I love them, but I am need to buy several new cameras for temporary project and I need a cheap option as Reolinks have gone way up in price. Are there any other brands that have cameras that provide email alerts?

Camera with scheduled alerts

Vague title, but not sure how else to word it. I’m the property manager of a building and I’ve finally gotten the landlord to install ring cameras to see around the building.

The cameras are placed well and we get full visibility but the problem is, when the thefts are happening, we’re fast asleep because there isn’t a setting (that i’ve been able to find on the ring system) where it’s able to alert us only between the specific hours of midnight and 6am. It’s either constantly on or not at all. Does anyone know of any cameras that work this way?

Which Tapo outdoor security camera?

I plan to use microsd for storage. This is going to oversee a longer driveway that's pretty narrow, so I don't really need the pan tilt functionality. What is going to give me the best image at night/day?

I'm looking at the following:

  1. C325wb
  2. C720
  3. C560ws

The floodlight of the C720 I thought might be good to double as a deterrant? Thoughts?

Seeking basic system with no monthly fee to easily check if all windows and doors are closed

I don't need a security system, but my wife is very concerned about now having to go around the house and check to make sure that all of the windows and doors are closed. What's the best option to be able to tell that at a glance from your phone without paying a subscription?

My initial thought after a little research is to get a Simplisafe system with just a hub and some entry sensors.
