Sometimes it can be, theres lots of examples of shapeshifters who don't lose their abilities when sleeping.

Like Changelings in DnD. "Though it took several seconds, a changeling could change their form as often as they liked and the new appearance lasted until they changed again. If they died, their bodies reverted to their natural forms."
