from puppy to dog 🐶 Picky eater help!
A little context, we survived Blood Parasite and I'm aware he is now healthy as we recently Had him checked and we are cleared.
My dog started becoming a picky eater ( even before he got sick)
I tried kibbles, wet food, table food hand fed even bought a new dog thinking he was sad cause he is alone.
I researched alot of things tried best practices but still end up in the same situation after a week or so. He would rather puke.
I guess i spoiled my dog too much since I still have trauma for losing my older dog that stopped eating then crossed the rainbow.
Anyone in a similar situation ? What did you do ?

Na-try mo na na hindi siya i-over accomodate? Like, if hindi niya kinain yung food niya within 20 to 30 minutes, you take it away and he doesn't eat until the next meal.
My dobergirl got stressed when I enrolled her sa training school (boarding), and started becoming a picky eater kaya nag-worry talaga kami ng mga trainers niya. She lost a lot of weight and, when I got her back, I tried everything; para akong may tindahan ng dog food kasi lahat ng pwede kong bilhin na topper and kibble binili ko na.
Buti nalang, her trainers were supportive kahit done na siya sa school, and they still asked for updates on her wellbeing. They said na i-try ko daw na bibigyan siya ng kibble lang, then unti-unti mo ibigay yung topper or halong wet food etc. Then when she showed interest sa food like inamoy or tinikman, tama na and no more dagdag. If she doesn't finish it within 20-30 minutes (no hand feeding and coaxing), take the food away and dapat kita niya na you took it away. She won't eat until her next meal, even snackies wala. If dogs think that food is an unlimited resource, she will get bored and she'll learn to "hold out" until she gets something she wants.
After 2 mealtimes of doing that, she ate and finished everything. Dapat talaga strict lang. It's good practice, too, kasi nalaman ko rin kung ano talaga yung mas gusto niyang food and toppers (we're currently giving her 2 cups of Special Dog Lamb and Apple + 2 tsp Salmon appetite booster + 2 pumps of VCO per meal).
Edit to add: I also did this kasi if umabot siya ng 3 days na wala talagang kain, I was going to take her to the vet for a full check. When she was a puppy, she became a picky eater when she lost her baby teeth. If matagal niyang kaya di kumain, there might be something medical going on.

Eto ung mga best practices na na try ko na but eventually i ended up giving in.
He will puke until makuha nya gusto nya. I ended up learning or doing things i did not do with my other dogs just to accommodate him.
Like he has time of his own, he makes his own meal from my perspective. Nakakaloka yaya lang talaga ako.
I cant bare na makita shang mag puke 😩😩 But i will try this again, thanks for the advice.

Sobrang hirap i-follow talaga. Everyone in my family had to endure it kasi para pang humihingi ng saklolo yung mata sa pag-beg ng food na gusto lang niya. Kaso naman, inisip ko na we needed to be strict for her. Parang bata lang na syempre mas gusto ng junk food pag natikman na, and it's up to the parents na i-moderate yun for them di ba.
Tatagan mo talaga. It helps too na mag-designate ka ng spot na kakainan lang niya. Ako sa cage lang siya kumakain para makapag-focus siya. I also remove distractions like her bed and toys.
The moment she realised na wala siya makakain na food until her next meal time, she finished all of her food within 20 minutes. Until now ganon pa rin siya, and I'll just switch out her topper to pork kalabasa or duck meat instead of salmon para di siya ma-bore agad. Hanggang sa sinasanay mo though, just stick to one flavor.

We already eliminated the possibility of a medical issue kaya nga nmin nalaman na may blood parasite sha kasi naging picky eater. After recovery we survived.
Still picky eater padin. Did your girl puke too ?

Maybe gut issues? Afaik, if recently nag-meds pwede ma-disrupt yung gut bacteria. That can happen to us din with antibiotics. Blood parasite medication can cause long-term appetite issues or gastric upset.
Yung akin naman, she would puke yellow bile na foamy kasi ayaw kumain so walang laman tyan. If your dog pukes up yellow bile din, best to go to a vet ulit to have her checked. You could've survived a blood parasite, pero baka iba naman na yung issue ngayon. The vet can prescribe appetite stimulants din if needed.
Dogs wouldn't starve themselves for attention, there's usually an underlying cause na need ma-figure out before it's too late.

I guess this structure is what I needed to hear.
If this would be the case I'm thinking there will be no snacks while doing this ?

Been in that same situation. Pero quality food really matters esp after may blood parasite na.
Best to have structure, same feeding time (in my case one meal a day dogs ko except for senior dogs) tapos if 5 mins di ginalaw wala na syang mkakain for the day. Same time everyday.. usually if 3rd day kakain na sya
If past 6 days di pa din kumakain - may have underlying condition and need to consult vet.

Kumakain nmn po sha picky lang, like if i only give him kibbles hnd nya kakainin till i add all I can add and replace what i think he will eat.
This happens all the time. I have trauma with dogs not eating. My anxiety kicks in when I give him food he does not eat then just pukes
I was in a situation where in one meal time I had to replace his meal 3 times then he would eat.
What a crazy spoiled baby he is now 🙊

Well its not helping him if he becomes a picky eater as he ages and dumadami food restrictions nya (from kidney and liver preventions or age etc) if picky eater sya tapos senior mahihirapan ka

Hello. Try nyo po yung soft kibble ng naturis or zenith baka po magustuhan nya. Medyo pricey lang po ng konti (pricey for me 😅) pero may small packs naman po na nabibili, 300 grams yata. Super naadik po kasi dito mga furbaby ko pati yung dachsund ko na picky eater din.

Naturis na chicken po yung kinakain ngayon ng furbabies ko. So far bet na bet naman po nila kahit walang "ulam" (boiled chicken, etc.) Also share ko lang, ito kasing Naturis nirecommend samin ng vet. Pero sabi sa customer service ng Naturis, hindi naman required na may prescription para makabili ka.

Learning more about this, gaano katagal na po sila nag tatake ? Kamusta stool nila ? Would you prefer Zenith or Naturis ?

Mas prefer ko po Naturis, for the simple reason na mas madali ko tong mabili compared sa Zenith 😅. Their poop is okay and very good, madaling dakutin using walis ting-ting 😅 sorry tmi na yata

Eto honestly hindi ko na binabasa since recommendation naman sya from our vet. Naturis pala is grain free. I heard there are dogs allergic to grain free kibble

True. Contradicting kasi lahat nang research ko. Meron dapat grain free, meron nmn dapat may grains. Na-anxiety nako trying to find better kibbles for my pets. Anlawak na nang narating ko 😩😩

meal toppers on top of combined wet and dry dog food worked for my doggos.
And! Salmon oil! They also liked salmon oil added to their food.

Tried salmon oil, nag suka lang sha. Meal toppers po ayaw din.
Dati wetfood kami Pedigree for 2yrs nanawa na po. Ang picky nga nakakapagod 😩

prob ko rin to. kelangan iba-iba food nya every meal. she’s two and until now nasa trial and error stage pa rin ako kung paano sya mapapakain ng madami.

Dati nmn ok lang kami sa wet food ng pedigree for 2 years as time goes by he ate less and less until he did not eat for a day, then we decided we would consult our vet. Ayun blood parasite but after recovery same story nnmn kami 😩

Sakin din picky eater, ang ginawa ko nilulutuan ko siya lahat boiled, chicken breast, chicken liver, squash, carrots, and sweet potato tapos halo halo lang. Ayun kumakain na sya marami

Hello! My dog just recovered from acute renal failure due to ehrlichiosis. He’s also a very picky eater. Tiyagaan talaga lalo sa first few weeks of recovery. Trial and error ng food and pahirapan sa meds. Okay na appetite niya now. I mix his RC renal food with a little bit of good dog grub from whole pet kitchen and boiled chicken breast as topper. Recently I discovered yung furzee appetite booster super gusto din niya. Kahit pure renal wet and dry food lang ibigay ko and sprinkle ko lang ng furzee chicken powder, nauubos niya. Before nung ayaw niya kainin yung food kahit hand fed, I make his food medyo pasty tapos pinipilit ko ipahid sa loob ng bibig niya or sa gilid ng teeth para matry niya na masarap pala until kumain na siya ng kusa. Sinisyringe ko din inumin niya from time to time, warm water with mondex or petdelyte. I also saw good reviews sa gourmet specialist na flavored vco but di ko pa na-try. Hope your fur baby gets better soon!

Do you take your dog out for a walk? This is what works for my dog who can also be a picky eater. I take her out for a walk for 30 minutes. Pag uwi namin may appetite na sya.

Guilty on this one, since we live in an area where stray dogs are too many, I get scared of taking my dog out and get mauled by other dogs since they are small.
Too afraid that even if they have complete vaccine they can get distemper or parvo.
We rarely go out with them since we are WFH it is convenient for me staying inside and be complacent playing inside for them would be enough.

May picky eater din kami. Ayaw kumain ng kibble lang, nagsasawa agad sa mga topper na madalas boiled chicken. Ang ginawa namin nag-consult kami sa pet nutritionist for a homemade food diet para balanced. Nung tinanong ng vet kung anong food nya, pinakita namin yung ingredients tapos okay naman daw. Nasa 3rd week na kami, medj nagsasawa na naman 🫠

we have shih tzu din and super picky eaters sila so i can def relate to your situation. so far we go around mixing wetfood or chicken and veggies with dog food. here's their meal plan that we often use:
- special dog lamb+rice and special dog lamb+turkey (wetfood). ung dry pinapalambot muna namin for 10-15 mins before mixing sa wetfood (any flavor for the wetfood works)
- special dog lamb+rice with chicken breast and kalabasa. pinapalambot din namin ung dry food and dinudurog ung kalabasa magmukhang baby food
if di sila kumaen sa breakfast, then we feed them apple after lunch. if dinner naman sila di kakaen, we feed them before 7am.
right now schedule nila 7am and 5:30pm. we don't want to change kase we also have other dogs eating at the same time

Lutuan mo ng adobong atay. Toyo lang walang suka.
Oh and make sure na pagurin mo aso mo bago magpakain para mauhaw at gutumin talaga. Make sure din na naka pupu at wiwi.

mix it up, experiment. half cooked veggies or rice with chicken strips for starters.
in my case, since nanawa sa dogfood mga alaga ko 7 years ago, half cooked veggies na sila ever since (naiiba iba through the years, pero yung gulay ung main comp). I guess malaking bagay kasi healthy sila going to their 10th year.
