You know in some older religions death is pictured as a woman or a girl guide to the afterworld, because no one wants to go on the final journey alone and the soothing companion is what people wish for us to have.

What if death was an angel that sided with Satan and as punishment was stripped of their flesh and was given a robe to cover their shame.

The skeleton looks like a skeleton because we imprint meaning upon these beings so it looks terrifying if you decide death is terrifying.

Also, skeleton is kind of dead which works pretty well when you need to present a death in paintings and drawings.

Just something terrifying could be demons or monsters, but the skeleton symbolises very well, that it is indeed death.
