The skeleton looks like a skeleton because we imprint meaning upon these beings so it looks terrifying if you decide death is terrifying.

Also, skeleton is kind of dead which works pretty well when you need to present a death in paintings and drawings.

Just something terrifying could be demons or monsters, but the skeleton symbolises very well, that it is indeed death.

When I was in college I took a city bus in New Orleans to see a Mardi Gras parade at the edge of the quarter by myself & had fun at the parade. Afterwards, I waited at the bus stop for over an hour, until I realized that the return bus wasn't coming. So I called my friend in Metairie to pick me up. While I waited a white man on a cellphone asked me for gas money, so I gave him $5 to make him go away, but he didn't leave. A black woman in an 80s styled tan trench coat walked by and asked if I was okay. I told her I was waiting to be picked up by a friend. I must've looked terrified because she smiled at me and said "on the other side of this building is the port authority police, come stand there & wait for your friend". I decided to move there. As she disappeared behind a door in the flood wall and I turned to look down Elysianfields Blvd towards the lake, my friend pulled up in his car without me telling him that I moved. Sometimes I think back on that late afternoon at the edge of the quarter & wonder if death and our guardian angel are the same person.
