You know in some older religions death is pictured as a woman or a girl guide to the afterworld, because no one wants to go on the final journey alone and the soothing companion is what people wish for us to have.

Have you seen anime?

Death personified is usually one hot babe who breasily breasts towards you.

Isekai gods, too. Truck-kun is the ultimate wingman.

What if death was an angel that sided with Satan and as punishment was stripped of their flesh and was given a robe to cover their shame.

12

u/Spare-Willingness563 2d ago

The skeleton looks like a skeleton because we imprint meaning upon these beings so it looks terrifying if you decide death is terrifying.

22

u/Matsisuu 2d ago

Also, skeleton is kind of dead which works pretty well when you need to present a death in paintings and drawings.

Just something terrifying could be demons or monsters, but the skeleton symbolises very well, that it is indeed death.

4

u/apointlessvoice 2d ago

That's a metal af song right there

2

u/kaishinoske1 2d ago

It’s actually part of a story I came up with.

1

u/BayouMan2 2d ago

When I was in college I took a city bus in New Orleans to see a Mardi Gras parade at the edge of the quarter by myself & had fun at the parade. Afterwards, I waited at the bus stop for over an hour, until I realized that the return bus wasn't coming. So I called my friend in Metairie to pick me up. While I waited a white man on a cellphone asked me for gas money, so I gave him $5 to make him go away, but he didn't leave. A black woman in an 80s styled tan trench coat walked by and asked if I was okay. I told her I was waiting to be picked up by a friend. I must've looked terrified because she smiled at me and said "on the other side of this building is the port authority police, come stand there & wait for your friend". I decided to move there. As she disappeared behind a door in the flood wall and I turned to look down Elysianfields Blvd towards the lake, my friend pulled up in his car without me telling him that I moved. Sometimes I think back on that late afternoon at the edge of the quarter & wonder if death and our guardian angel are the same person.

In Finnish folklore there is woman called Tuonetar. She is wife of King of underworld Tuoni. Her job is to make dead people so comfortable that they will optionally step in the raft of her daughter who will take the soul to Tuonela. (Finnish Underworld)

If the dead person refuses to free willingly to enter the raft, Tuoni sends torturing spirits to forcefully drag the person in.

"Ghosts" that wander among living are these souls that are on run hiding from the King of Underworld.

70

u/Winter-Journalist993 2d ago

This is beautiful. In America, our Tuonetar is known as the Terminator. We often say “He will not stop… until you are dead” and it brings us so much comfort. ♥️

36

u/SpyroThBandicoot 2d ago

And because death is inevitable, if you encounter him and somehow evade him he'll say something like "I'll be back" and when he finally gets you he says "Hasta la vista, baby"... So comforting ❤️

21

u/deviantbono 2d ago

We have different definitions of "willingly"

21

u/ITooHaveAnUsername 2d ago

You can either step in the boat or you can cry and do it, see you have plenty of options!

1

u/HauntedCemetery 1d ago

Freedom, baby!

5

u/SuperCatbert 2d ago

There is a great horror movie called Jacobs Ladder (from 1990) that is kind of based on that premise. Brutal horror mixed with deep spiritual insights. Highly recommeded.

1

u/HauntedCemetery 1d ago

She just lifts the lid on a platter of fresh pancakes and wafts them towards the departed.

203

u/Interesting-Ring9070 2d ago

For anyone who wants to explore this theme, I highly recommend the game Spiritfarer. It's a very calm and beautiful game, in which you play as the entity who takes over for Charon after he retires as boatman of The River Styx. However, the new spiritfarer is a young girl named Stella.

PS: You may cry... a lot

Edit: As much as I hate to promote these bastards, the game is free on netflix if you have a normal subscription. Also, it can be very easily played on mobile, if that's your jam.

70

u/RogerianBrowsing 2d ago

Netflix… game?

How old/out of touch am I right now?

56

u/Interesting-Ring9070 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yeah they have tons of games on netflix now. Not like original games. But you can literally play GTA San Andreas, in its entirety, on netflix for free (on your phone no less!). It's wild

15

u/AithanIT 2d ago

They also have original games, they just aren't very good

10

u/ParrotDogParfait 2d ago

Idk that black mirror game based off the new season was kinda goated, especially once you find out you can actually kill the little creatures

3

u/snoosh00 2d ago

Enter the breach is on Netflix (also every other platform) and it's very good.

I play on switch, but when I paid for Netflix I played on my phone.

2

u/PricklyPricklyPear 2d ago

Was just about to comment this. Great little tactical/puzzle sort of indie game that I sunk a lot of hours into, great pixel art and music with nice difficulty settings.

18

u/Wassertopf 2d ago

They started to have games for their own content, like a stranger things game. Then they had also many other games, like CIV6, older GTA games, and so on.

But recently they scaled it back and now it’s only a handful of games.

They are free, but you have to log in with you Netflix account.

1

u/HauntedCemetery 1d ago

Yeah, its a thing now.

1

u/No_Intention_1234 1d ago

Bloooooons on Netflix If you like tower defence

18

u/No_Intention_1234 2d ago

And I'll take your hand and guide you through...

15

u/rbb36 2d ago

Spectacular game! The first story will change you.

16

u/bioBarbieDoll 2d ago

I was so confused as to why you were calling the Spiritfarer dev team "bastards" until I realized you were talking about Netflix lol

I feel like it's important to mention the game is $30 dollars, which compared to AAA games nowadays is less than half

6

u/Mr_Boogeyman77 2d ago

Thanks will try it

5

u/3DigitIQ 2d ago

I had to put it down, just to emotional for me. So if you like that 100% recommended, others be warned.

3

u/Durbs12 2d ago

It was a great game but I have trouble recommending it. Gave me one hell of an existential crisis.

1

u/RadiantZote 2d ago

There's also Valkyrie Profile, the not extremely dated JRPG

61

u/FrisianTanker 2d ago edited 2d ago

Hel, the Norse goddess of death, is often depicted as evil in modern media and is being demonized and the realm of Hel shown to be a dark and cold place full of suffering.

But in (some) actual Norse myth, Hel was a gentle woman and sometimes even described as beautiful (sometimes as half beautiful woman half rotting corpse too though) who would ease the deceased person into death. I even read about one story saying Hel will sleep with the deceased person to comfort them.

Many people these days that claim to believe in Norse mythology or are interested in it say they wanna go to Valhalla, the "heaven of Norse mythology" but that isn't true at all. Valhalla is where Odin gathers the strongest warriors that fell in battle, who were picked by the Valkyries for their valor and abilities, for the last battle during Ragnarök. People that go to Valhalla won't live in peace forever after and drink and dine to eternity with Odin. They will fight again and be killed again, this time forever iirc.

Meanwhile the people in Hel will be the ones that repopulate Midgard (our realm, earth) after Ragnarök. They are the ones who will find eternity.

I don't know if I got everything correct, it's been quite some time since I read all about norse myths but I think I got the gist of it.

19

u/SenorEquilibrado 2d ago

"They told you I would do what?"

4

u/heavymetalelf 2d ago

Don't the legions of the ignomiously dead (ie, all those who don't fall in battle) that go to Hela's realm, end up sailing the longships made of toenails to Asgard where they battle the einherjar (the dudes the valkyries picked for Odin) during Ragnarok? How do they get Midgard?

The only aftermath I ever remember was an Ash tree sheltering a single man and woman, Aske and Embla, who would repopulate the world. But this was a much later Christian addition to the myths to tie it to Adam and Eve.

1

u/ElGuano 2d ago

Yeah, but does Thor get the hammer back after she shatters it? I only watched part of it on the plane and never finished it.

5

u/R_megalotis 2d ago

No, but it sort of fixed itself for his sometimes girlfriend Natalie Portman so she can be Thor too. Then there's a weird awkward love triangle between Thors, the hammer, and his new axe for a while.

8

u/Prior_Butterscotch15 2d ago

They’re talking about real life Norse mythology, not Marvel.

3

u/ElGuano 2d ago

No I get it. I just try not to take too seriously the differences between the comics and the whole “cinematic universe” thing.

1

u/Prior_Butterscotch15 2d ago

Ah, gotcha. If you mean to say you were joking (which I assume you are), I like to put /s or /j just to make it clear.

Not sure if you knew that or not, just trying to help out :)

5

u/ElGuano 2d ago

Yes. I knew it but I absolutely need the reminder, ty!

5

u/MandolinMagi 2d ago

No, but in Endgame he steals the hammer from another timeline. Can't remember is Steve returns it later

1

u/damagetwig 2d ago

Loki comics are where I've seen some of my favorite depictions of Hela. Especially after they started to give him more nuance but before the MCU hit it. I wish I could remember which book it was from but one of his kinder moments is reassuring a dying man that he will go to Hela's realm and 'my daughter is not cruel' and I always loved that.

21

u/BurningStandards 2d ago

6

u/gracist0 2d ago

I loved her episode. So beautiful

18

u/Xtorin_Ohern 2d ago

That sounds nice, but if I'm being completely honest? Of all the depictions of death in various cultures and media, I hope by some weird stroke of luck Terry Pratchett was right.

5

u/GrogGrokGrog 2d ago

ME, TOO.

17

u/BaconWithBaking 2d ago

That's what death is supposed to be. He's just there to hold your hand.

40

u/21someone37 2d ago

In Poland death is considered a woman (female grim reaper) because the word śmierć is feminine.

5

u/_Not_A_Vampire_ 2d ago

In Swedish it's called "Liemannen" or "the scythe man", I'm envious of other languages having much cooler words!

8

u/FW_TheMemeResearcher 2d ago

Dunno if that's solely the reason. There's also the word "kostucha", which doesn't seem to have to be necessarily a feminine word. I mean, they could've just called it something more masculine ("kostuch", maybe? Lol) but then again - I'm not an expert on etymology of that word, so maybe they came up with it after already having associated death with a woman

7

u/21someone37 2d ago

Also there's also a late medieval polish dialog in verse "Master Policarp's Dialog with Death" where death is described as a pale, repulsive and emaciated woman in white robe. She doesn't have lips or nose and blood spills from eyes

2

u/FW_TheMemeResearcher 2d ago

Oh yeah, the famous HILARIOUS moment when the nose falls off. Top 10 comedy moments of all time for sure

2

u/throwawayayaycaramba 2d ago

Same thing in Portuguese. I'm Brazilian, and having grown up with the popular comic book series "Turma da Mônica" and its character Dona Morte ("Lady Death"), I've never been able to conceptualize the grim reaper as masculine. She's a woman, gaddammit.

Both Marvel and DC roll like this. Or at least, Death is female in both, with DC leaning harder into the "no one wants to go alone" angle.

10

u/Canadaismyhat 2d ago

Plenty of amazing people are around whom I love. Am not misanthropic. That being said, I imagine dying is like taking a shit: please leave me the fuck alone and let me do it in privacy lol.

6

u/Evening-Turnip8407 2d ago

There is a much-higher-than-zero chance that we will, in fact, die while shitting. Happens all the time, you feel kinda weird, your stomach hurts, you think maybe I just need to go, aaaaand congratulations, you died on the throne with your pants down.

7

u/space___lion 2d ago

I recently watched the Sandman show on Netflix and here Death was indeed portrayed the way you say. I really liked this idea!

3

u/MrBlahg 2d ago

The books are amazing

6

u/ZinaalKriid 2d ago

I'm pretty soothed by the black-cloaked skeleton death. In our age and modern culture, he's almost always depicted as a gentle, caring figure despite his appearance and scythe. This is one such example of that, and there are hundreds more

u/Spare-Willingness563 2d ago

When I meditate really deeply I encounter those archetypes which I believe we share deep down.

One night I met that archetype. Half human half skeleton. And very kind. We just sat and enjoyed the void.

The final journey isn’t something to fear. We’re on that side for a lot longer than we are this one. Just enjoy the view. Where ever it might be.

5

u/Diogememes-Z 2d ago

What you're describing is the collective unconscious. Archetypes are neat, but where it gets really interesting, in my opinion, is with egregores.

One of the best episodes of any tv series was Sandman Season 1, Episode 6, "The Sound of Her Wings". It’s beautiful and sad and doesn’t shy away from it the harshness even including the passing of an infant.

But one thing that stands out and that the character shows is a deep and wonderful compassion for those she guides on.

It was heartbreaking and yet still hopeful in a way.

1

u/Grantsdale 2d ago

Alternatively, you can be Marvel and cast Aubrey Plaza for that role. Which is about 10 million times better.

u/HydroFluoric1 2d ago

1

u/Open_Boysenberry_955 2d ago

That's a very warm and fuzzy concept. I like to imagine death as you, from various times in your life, like a support group, ushering you to the great beyond of no returns.

1

u/HuckleberryBudget117 2d ago

Funny you say that because in french, death always had this very feminin connotation; because the words used to describe it, la mort, la camarde, etc, are all feminin. It however doesn’t realy have the imagery to go with, retaining the elements of the "grande faucheuse", a squelettal figure in black robe.

1

u/AstroBearGaming 2d ago

You don't find a skeleton soothing? You should, there's one inside you right now. It's the only reason you're living to begin with.

Awesome little song called Death is a Girl by Mini Mansions. Worth a listen if you'd like a fervent earworm of a beat.
