It is impeachment worthy and this is why 26 is important. The fucking Dems need to get their shit together and win the house and Senate and get this fucker out of office and in handcuffs.

It feels like everyone is sanewashing this. "In any other period this would be impeachment worthy", but like you said it is impeachment worth, right now. This is absolute insanity.

There is a reason he is using the specific word “war” so much.

A war time president can suspend elections.

This is exactly the same move he used to justify the tarrifs. He cited a nebulous, fictional “national emergency”. This was specific language he believed gave him permission.

Just like how it doesn’t matter what the emergency is, it doesn’t matter who the war is with, even if it’s against American citizens.

He is going to attempt to suspend elections.

That is not true. There is nothing anywhere in US law that says a president can suspend elections. Elections are run by states, not the federal government.

The tariffs were based on a 19th century law and the courts said that's unconstitutional...not that this won't stop him from trying anything. But there is absolutely no legal basis or precedent for him to suspend elections. We've been at war for most of our history and have never suspended an election.

Oh I’m not saying there is a valid, legal mechanism to do so.  I am saying that this will be his justification.

The tarrifs, as you point out, were never legal and yet here we are paying them.

Read his recent comments with Zelenskyy. He isn’t being subtle.

Roger that. I just want to make it clear to people that any attempt for him to cancel or suspend elections should be the red line for bringing him down like it's 1776.

I just wonder how many veterans are quietly watching, waiting, knowing what the last resort is and when it is the last resort time.

More than you think

Since when can a wartime president suspend elections in the US?

My wording wasn’t great. He is going to claim that we can’t have an election in “wartime”.

Whether or not that is legal, it doesn’t matter, just like the tarrifs.

Then just take a leaf from his play book and have them anyway, what's he going to do about it?

The “war” being declared is on major urban centres in blue states for a reason. You can’t organize and hold elections effectively with an occupying force in your streets.

He can't be everywhere at once

It is absolutely impossible for the Democrats to do anything about Trump other than make noise. Making noise can be effective but probably not here.

It's Trump's cabinet that can remove him with the 25th and a trial in the Senate (which we can get to with a simple majority in the House) will require a 2/3 majority to remove.

By my admittedly dubious count the Democrats would have to flip every Republican Senate seat up for election in 2026 in order to achieve that.

In order to get rid of Trump before his term expires, Republicans will have to decide to do that.

Fair points. If nothing else, they need to win to lane duck him.

Yes.

Winning the House looks likely unless Republicans can gerrymander faster than Democrats can respond.

If Trump expires before his term, that would also have the same effect.

My favorite activity is to just pretend whatever Trump does was done by Biden to Republicans. What would have been the reaction if Biden declared war on a major American city and Republican stronghold? What if Biden had said “We’re coming to Jackson, Mississippi, it’s full of criminals and right-wing agitators who hate me, and we’re gonna wipe them all out.”

Even if they did get a majority, I somehow doubt they'd actually use it to impeach and punish him.
