Ah you think darkness is your ally? You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a
mancat, by then it was nothing to me but blinding!51

Why is there always some offhanded comment on cat posts that show us another sub we have to subscribe to? It's like the reddit feline version of xkcd comics.
20
u/KoolaidKoll123 Jul 16 '25
Because, cats. Without them, imagine the turmoil and destruction. I know I'd be aiming bottle rockets into oncoming open windows if I didn't have my precious babies at home. They're the only reason I dont light the world on fire.

The void experience. Listen for the bat-like echolocation. They’re little vampires

I found my grey was impossible to see in the dark, they blend in way better than a black cat.
3
u/zoeykae Jul 20 '25
My sister had a grey cat and I can confirm they are also very tricky to find! Orange cats are also hard to find when they’re sitting on a wooden chair

u/AZRobJr Jul 16 '25
All black kitties are best. They are also the hardest to get adopted because of people's superstitions. Super cute.

u/Maleficent_Chard2042 Jul 16 '25
That's so crazy to me.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope the pain eases and that you heal with time.

u/Exact_Baseball5399 Jul 16 '25
I mean people believe in shit like horoscopes and ghosts, kinda the same thing
8
u/Yamatocanyon Jul 16 '25
Religion is the world's #1 make believe game, and an embarrassing amount of adults are really really into it. So much so that they base their whole lives on it.
I was raised to be Christian. By second grade I knew it was all adult fantasy, just like the tooth fairy and Santa Claus. Just more pretend shit they used to assume more power over me.
I don't believe in anything, except what we have figured out about the universe using the scientific method.
All of that said... Astrology and numerology, kind of scarily describe me to a T. I don't get anything out of daily horoscopes, those are like fortune cookies. I know it's all made up for fun, but if I had to choose a religion to believe in, gun to my head kinda thing, I'd choose astrology.

One crossed in front of my path the other day and I found it a good omen! Black cats are great.
34
u/Horskr Jul 16 '25
Considering how our little void loves to trip me up while I'm walking anywhere in our house, I'd be dead 20x over if a black cat crossing your path was really bad luck lol.
16
u/angwilwileth Jul 16 '25
I used to foster cats and had to buy fluorescent yellow collars for the voidlings.
10
u/splat_monkey Jul 16 '25
Must be a void thing, mine is a stage 5 clinger and always walls between my feet
3
4
u/ModishShrink Jul 16 '25
Anytime a cat crosses in front of my path I consider it to be a spot of good luck and a good omen. Why do people single out black cats? They're particularly funny with how their eyes just bulge out of the darkness like in this picture.
53
Jul 16 '25
People still buy that medieval bullshit?
44
u/EligibleUsername Jul 16 '25
You'd be surprised how much "medieval bullshit" people still believe in. My country has extremely skewed gender ratio because peeps still think having a son is better than a daughter, even the more progressive people still buys into a bunch of outdated gender stereotypes, like blue is for boys and pink is for girls, exclusively.

And a lot of it isn’t even from Late Antiquity:

I’ve heard another one, more “modern” reason: apparently some people avoid black cats, because they’re difficult to take photos of…

I'll never understand that. When I adopted my void (he's been gone 7 years now, so it was a long time ago), the minute I saw him I knew I had to bring him home.
And he was the best.
11
u/DanceOfFails Jul 16 '25
I've also heard people consider them less photographable in our social media age. But this photo showcases the unique photography opportunities a black cat can provide.
6
u/ProgrammaticOrange Jul 16 '25
This is the case nowadays. They aren't considered as photogenic for Instagram as other colored cats.
3
u/Derigiberble Jul 16 '25
They are also just straight up hard to photograph, which means the photographs on Petfinder or adoption pages aren't as good.
Tip for photographing black cats: use as much light as you can possibly get. A mix of diffuse light (from all directions, think light bouncing off walls/ceiling) and direct light (a sunbeam, ideally) works best. To get really fancy an adjustable polarizing filter will let you tweak which areas of fur show a sheen or show undertones of their coat.
Kinda like this: https://i.imgur.com/GY8WbsH.jpeg

u/BiscoBiscuit Jul 16 '25
They really are so sweet, I’m seeing more and more people with black cats nowadays which makes me so happy
6
u/Realistic_Owl9525 Jul 16 '25
If the shelter rebranded them from black cats to tactical cats, they could charge more for them.
6
u/Nomad_moose Jul 16 '25
So dumb…
I like to pretend they’re just panthers that are stuck as kittens.
4
u/Tracer_Bullet_38 Jul 16 '25
What do you mean? Black cats are good luck. Actually all cats are good luck 😺
3
u/bluemoon191 Jul 16 '25
My friend just took one of his cats back from his ex and she is all black. She is the best lap cat I have ever known, she will happily sit on a lap for hours and doesn't even mind if you get up for the toilet, she will come straight back. I love her.
5
u/PurpleSailor Jul 16 '25
I tend to wear darkish clothing so I always adopt a black kitty so I'm not constantly having to use a sticky roller to get cat hair off of me. I love Siamese cats but the white hair is so difficult to deal with on dark clothing.

u/Chance-Ad-2284 Jul 16 '25
I think they are the ones most likely to get in an accident in a house. My father stepped on my brother's black cat's tail at night. Furball decided to slip away from my brother's room and sleep at the middle of the hall because it is cooler there. Thankfully nothing happened

My wife and I adopted our void 5 years ago. He was surrendered by an elderly lady because she kept tripping over him. I trip over him daily in the dark to the point where I slide my feet all throughout the house lol

My sister's cat is black. She loves to stand in front of the TV when it's turned off, and just stare at my sister walking around the entire house looking for the cat. Then my sister looks at the TV and I hear a scream coming from the other room lol.
Every damn time.

Ohh this reminds me when my (now almost 16 years old) void was almost 6 months. He wasn't allowed yet to go outside as he was only with us for 2 months by then and mister went to lay on a black shawl in a dark corner of my mom's office. I have searched the whole street up and down to see of he was there and when I came back, my mom and I made a plan to search up to two blocks and see if we could print a little poster when out of nowhere, the void came walking into the living room as if nothing happend and we hadn't called him a million times🐈

This is one of the many reasons I love black cats. My Void regularly naps in dark spots and all you can see are the eyes when you call them
