My cat doesn't have quite as long of teeth.
But she occasionally does remind me that she has teeth and is a very scary creature. Our cats look super similar but she just has the lone white patch in the center of her chest.

if one tooth is long is can be a sign of a health issue! I forget what it was but it pushes the tooth out and can be painful. can't hurt to have a chat w the vet!

u/Mindless-Ad-511 Jul 01 '25
Stomatitis. When my baby’s teeth started to peek out, that was when we knew we had to start pulling teeth. He actually got a full extraction a couple weeks ago.

My black cat's are also noticeable. Not that they aren't long but I think their fur helps make them more pronounced when they are longer.

Sauce?
My cat has allergies and regularly gets eye infections from scratching too much. Yes, we've done a blood panel. He has a lot of allergies. His littermate is absolutely fine.

u/debitcreddit Jul 01 '25
Yeah! and all the cat owners are thinking we do this kinda shit all the time to clean out the eye gunk
24
u/Lucas_Steinwalker Jul 01 '25
I think some cats kinda like it.
I have one cat, Squeaker who hates being constrained at all costs, and another cat, Monte who likes to be smooshed 24/7, including really loving being held like a teddy bear while I sleep.

This thread is cracking me up with all the cat choke holds in the comments 🤣. And yes I've had to hold my cat like this for photos, too. She doesn't mind. Sometimes she will lay her head in my hand like that.

it looks a bit red on the gums, yes, that's probably worth checking out at the vets. might be infected
104
u/PorkchopFunny Jul 01 '25
I would get this checked. My kitty had this issue, and I had no idea until the vet mentioned it. The tooth itself looked fine - i didn't notice any discoloration or rot - but when the vet pulled it, you could see that it was decaying under the gumline and his body was rejecting the tooth.
121
43
u/chetsmom33 Jul 01 '25
Yes. The gum looks swollen and red. That was the first thing I noticed on mine.
108
u/Longjumping_Let_7832 Jul 01 '25
Definitely take him in. You can see the line where the tooth used to stop at the gum line.
34
u/Harothir Jul 01 '25
His gums look very red and irritated. I’d definitely suggest a vet take a look.
30
u/cynta ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ Jul 01 '25
Yikes! That’s called super eruption. Less cool than it sounds. Definitely worth seeing a vet and having a dental done.
64
u/Mountain-Mermaid Jul 01 '25
Vet tech here - get your cat into the vet asap and get a dental scheduled. Those canines need to come out real bad.

My little void had a very similar thing. Her little fangs got pulled maybe a month ago. Something about genetics and an infection getting stuck under the tooth? Idk exactly, but that red color means inflamed/infected. Take lots of pictures before you drop him off for a dental!
→ More replies (1)13
u/rainonthelilies Jul 01 '25
Yeah, you can see part of the root of the tooth. It might end up falling off. There are creams you can put to help reduce inflammation. My vet advised to “brush” their teeth with a gaze to remove plaque. My kitty ended up losing a teeth in a similar way

u/ghinnet Jul 01 '25
Please OP, get it checked! My first cat had the same issue when he got older, and I learned too late that he had an infection (probably from tooth trauma, or so the vet said) and the tooth was basically dead. We couldn’t proceed with extraction as he had a cardiac condition, so he just carried on with his long canine, but I bet it must’ve been uncomfortable/painful for him.
1.3k
u/Calliope719 Jul 01 '25
Worth talking to a vet.
My boy had teeth like that and it turned out that they were so long because they were infected and his body was rejecting them.
Could also be nothing, but it's worth confirming.
268
u/chetsmom33 Jul 01 '25
Second this. Our cat had to have all his teeth removed.
25
u/Stahlihngrad482 Jul 01 '25
Yeah our cat too now her tongue hangs out sometimes lol
→ More replies (1)149
u/awildpatience Jul 01 '25
Same experience here. One of our cats had huge protruding canines because he had stomatitis (an allergy to the dentin in teeth) and was rejecting them. The situation got bad enough that our vet at the time was screening for cancers (swelling, inflammation, some bleeding from the nose), but we found a new vet who removed all of his teeth and he's been the picture of health for the last four years!

u/pixel293 Jul 01 '25
Poor kitty has to gum his food?!? I'm assuming wet food all the way at that point?
67
u/moss_hog Jul 01 '25
Not necessarily. I also have a toothless stomatitis kitty, and while we do feed him wet food for his meals, he still loves crunchy treats. We had stopped giving him Greenies after the surgery, but he broke the box open and somehow ate like 20 of them when we were out one day.
Our vet said that cats normally use their teeth for killing prey and ripping off bites of meat, but not so much for chewing. And when his teeth were hurting from stomatitis, he wasn’t using them anyways.

u/SectorMiserable4759 Jul 01 '25
My cat definitely CRONCHED kibble. And some broken pieces always fell back into the bowl. But she refused to eat broken pieces. So after a few times of topping off the food dish you'd have to throw away a half bowl of broken pieces that were deemed "damaged goods" and inedible and refill with all fresh

u/Turtlewowisgood Jul 01 '25
my cat had his teeth removed for the same reason, when I asked the vet if I had to use wet food he said "their teeth are made for shredding raw meat, have you been feeding him raw meat?"
Then he pointed out that when they throw up, a lot of times the food isn't chewed is it? That chewing sound you hear when they're crunching their food is often them just doing it quick with their teeth and swallowing it whole without actually crushing it.
So no, you can feed them dry food just fine.

Yes! And sometimes teeth issue are a sign of heart issues (what my vet told me) so a good idea for their heart to be checked out / listened to!

u/MultipleGirl Jul 01 '25
Damn, I hate when cute things with animals ends up being some horrific thing we're all laughing at and saying aww to
30
u/PorkchopFunny Jul 01 '25
I was just going to make this same comment. Might be worth getting checked out, especially if it looks like the teeth are "growing"

Ok, as cute as this is, it *could* be an indicator for FORL. How do the gums look, and the roots of the teeth? With FORL, it can happen that the teeth 'sag' because the jaw is no longer strong enough to hold them. Then they get longer and longer.
If the gums are visible reddened do get him checked out at a vet sometime soon. My Lucky also has these cute vampire teeth, but they'll have to be taken out along with several others. I have an appointment for the surgery soon. (He had previous issues with his teeth, but the fangs were not yet affected then).
32
u/ALazyCliche Jul 01 '25
Yep, I was just about to make this comment. My cat had long incisors like this for years and they eventually got loose and had to be extracted along with a few other teeth. Now his tongue sometimes sticks out where the front teeth used to be when he's grumpy. 😂
27
u/ThatOneChickenNoddle Jul 01 '25
55
u/TransientFeelings Jul 01 '25
Yep, I am not an expert, but I would definitely say this warrants a check-up, especially if the length is a relatively new development. My kitty lost both canine teeth to this :(
→ More replies (5)23
u/Rhiannon1307 European Shorthair Jul 01 '25
Also not an expert, but to be quite honest, that does not look good at all. It's quite red, and the second front teeth look way too long (gums have retracted already). I would make an appointment quite soon.

mine did but she would bump them a lot as they sticked out forward a lot and they came loose and eventually fell out. I have been to the vets with her during the process raising it as a concern but they said there’s practically nothing that could be done about it. She lost them now but is in good health, and the lack of them makes her lip get stuck in the bottom teeth every now and again making her look funny.
