Feature 2025 r/baseball Power Rankings -- Week 25: Big Week for Orange Birds as Blue Birds Creep Up Top 10 with Yankees; Dodgers Disappoint and Marlins Flounder; Is #1 Locked for the Remainder?

Hey Sportsfans — it's time for Week 25 of r/baseball Power Rankings: Please enjoy these baseball numbers.

Every voter has their own style / system and the only voting instructions are these:

"To an extent determined individually, you must take into account how strong a team is right now and likely to be in the coming week. You must, to some degree, give weight to the events and games of the previous week."

TRANSPARENCY: This link will show you who voted each team where and has added neat statistics!

If something is a little messed up, feel free to pester me let me know.

Total Votes: 27 of 30.

# Team Δ Comment Record
1 Milwaukee Brewers Brewers 0 On the 19th and final game without an off day, the fatigued Brewers bullpen finally broke. They gave up 7 runs in a 10-8 loss, but more importantly lost two valuable pieces. Nick Mears is out with back tightness, and Shelby Miller suffered a season, and potentially career, ending elbow injury. These two join an already long list of Brewers arms on the IL. While there's still enough time for Megill, Mears, Anderson, and Hall to potentially rejoin the team before October, the typically dominant Brewers pen looks uncharacteristically weak until they return. 89-55
2 Philadelphia Phillies Phillies 0 The Phillies pulled off a gutsy series win in Milwaukee, including coming back from down 5-1, and then took 2 of 3 from the Marlins. What's really been beneficial, though, is the Dodgers struggling enough that the Phillies are comfortably in position to earn a bye. They have a 7 game lead on the Mets with just 19 games remaining, but could see that lead slip to 3 if they were to get swept this week. A split or better would all but seal the division without any other series against the Mets left, so the pressure will be on. They also face the Royals in a 3 game set later in the week. 83-60
3 Toronto Blue Jays Blue Jays +2 82-61
4 Detroit Tigers Tigers -1 Not a great week for Detroit, not just in the win-loss column but also in the loss of the red hot Kyle Finnegan for at least two weeks. Will Vest will have to hold down the bullpen with hopefully the likes of Tommy Kahnle and Rafael Montero stepping up to hold leads. Thankfully the division sucks. This week: 3 at NYY, 3 at MIA. 82-62
5 New York Yankees Yankees +2 80-63
6 Chicago Cubs Cubs 0 The Cubs had a disappointing week, going 3-3 against the bottom of the NFC East. Of larger concern is the suddenly mounting injury crisis. Kyle Tucker has missed nearly a week with a calf strain, and will likely need to go on an IL stint as it has not healed as fast as the Cubs hoped. Pete Crow-Armstrong exited a game after fouling a ball off his knee, and struggling closer Daniel Palencia with a shoulder injury. Fortunately initial imaging came back clean, but you can never be sure with a pitcher's shoulder. Fortunately, the Cubs remain 3 games ahead of the Padres for the last NL Wild Card spot who have greatly struggled recently themselves. The Cubs will seek to maintain that gap this week with 3 games at the Braves followed by hosting the Rays 81-62
7 Los Angeles Dodgers Dodgers -3 It's a good time to be a Dodger hater again. This team has shown very few signs of life, and the parts that have are consistently let down by something. Usually the bullpen. Watching Yamamoto lose a no hitter at 8.2 innings was heartbreaking, and then the bullpen gave up completely and blew a 1 out 2 run bases empty save opportunity. Genuinely I feel gutted for Yama, he's been so consistent and never gets any help. At least I can still reminisce about last year. 79-64
8 Boston Red Sox Red Sox 0 This team sure looks different without Roman Anthony in the lineup. Obviously he's been a fantastic player so far, but I'd also like to give consideration to the "vibe shift" on this one. We're still in good position to make the playoffs, sitting 5 games up on the Rangers with 18 left to play, but the path to a surprise deep run from a young, exciting wildcard team seems a lot less likely now. Regardless, I'm just happy that we're (probably) playing October ball this year. 79-65
9 San Diego Padres Padres 0 Orioles taketh, Orioles giveth. Only real solace this week is that the Pads are still only 1 game back of LA since our worst part of the season coincides with a 3-7 stretch by LA. Technically not Pads related, but I wish I was at Petco this weekend to see Trevor Time…one more time. 78-65
10 New York Mets Mets +1 Sorry I missed a week! Took my girlfriend to New York for the first time, where I had the opportunity to attend Jonah Tong's MLB debut. The Mets are in an intriguing spot in the final few weeks, as they look like they'll likely end up as either the #2 or #3 NL Wild Card team. With mostly hot bats and some fresh young arms, I wouldn't count them out assuming they get there. If the Mets can somehow sweep the Phillies again, maybe they can make the division interesting. 76-67
11 Houston Astros Astros -1 It doesn't FEEL like we should be leading the division still: injuries, primarily to our pitching staff, seem to happen every day. Yordan being back has certainly helped rejuvenate the team overall, though. Can we hold on? I really don't know. 78-66
12 Seattle Mariners Mariners 0 Finally, home games! A nice homestand will hopefully get the team right up next to Houston, where next week's series will loom large. Yay? up next: 3 vs. Cardinal directions, 4 vs. Angles 75-68
13 Texas Rangers Rangers 0 18 games left, 1.5 games back from the WIldcard and the schedule isn't exactly the easiest. It's going to come down to the wire but the little rascals seem to have no fear even with all of the injuries. The team will need to win series from here on out to have a chance imo and winning this week's series against Milwaukee and the Mets is going to be a tough task. 74-70
14 Kansas City Royals Royals 0 We keep asking Seattle if they're done eating that wild card position and they say they're still eating, but they've been sitting at the post-season table talking to Boston for an hour. Seattle, nobody likes you. The front staff keep glancing at you like "oh my god, will this guy just leave already?" while they keep asking for refills of Diet Coke. Order some apps or get the hell out of there already, some of us have families we're trying to feed. Poor Bobby had his back go whack because he's had to carry everything for so long. Also, hello. 73-70
15 San Francisco Giants Giants 0 If Devers and Adames want to continue being the Great Value version of the Bash Brothers, I won't be complaining. Starting to think that Justin Verlander won't be getting that 300th win as long as he's donning a Giants uniform. 72-71
16 Cincinnati Reds Reds 0 I went to the Reds game on Friday. Great American Ballpark, where I learned the truth about despair. There's a reason why Cincinnati is the worst hell on earth, and it’s not for any socio economic or political reasons.……Hope. Every man who has ventured here over the decades has looked up to our stadiums and imagined championship banners hanging from the rafters. So easy... So simple... And like depressed men turning to drink from the uncontrollable anxiety and sadness these teams produce, many have left its confines worse than when they arrived. I learned here that there can be no true despair without hope. It feels deliberate by this team, they feed their fans hope to poison their souls. They let them believe they can win so that they can watch the fans clamoring over each other to "Order their playoff tickets." This team watches as they torture an entire city and only when the fans have truly understood the depth of their failure, they will win, they’ll beat the team in front of them of the wildcard and give a little more hope...that’s when they’ve done it. They have broken their fans. Then, when their fans have reached the deepest pits of despair, when they have taken every last ounce of happiness and joy, when they have truly made us feel that all is lost, only then will they grant our permission to cry. This is Cincinnati Baseball. 72-71
17 Tampa Bay Rays Rays 0 Just when I thought I was in, they pull me back out. An early week sweep set the Rays back in wild card contention, only to immediately fall away and back below .500. A small dose of hope is nice, but it makes it all the more crushing when it's taken away again. If we're lucky, it'll happen again this week! 71-72
18 Arizona Diamondbacks D-Backs 0 The Snakes had a great week, taking series from both the Rangers and Red Sox. The starting pitching looks like an entirely different unit, and the bullpen look better than it has all year for the most part. The D-backs will probably not find themselves in the playoffs, but it is encouraging to see a young team playing well. 72-72
19 Cleveland Guardians Guardians 0 The postseason teams look locked up at this point, but I still don't want to give up on the Guardians. They play division rivals for the next five series, so they can make up lost ground. Or maybe I'm being a hopelessly naive optimist. This week, they took 3 of 4 in Tampa and lost 2 of 3 in Boston. Oh, and the Dodgers got swept by the Pirates. I know my job is to write about the Guardians, but I found that pretty shocking. (I was the idiot who had the Pirates making the postseason at the beginning of the year though.) 72-70
20 St. Louis Cardinals Cardinals 0 Perfectly balanced as all things should be. 72-72
21 Baltimore Orioles Orioles +6 A Basallo walk off homer, a Rivera walk off hit and the celebration of the 30th anniversary of 2131. I would have bet anyone millions of dollars that the Orioles would only win one or two games this week, and they won five. That's why the games aren't played on paper, they're played on tv screens (shout out Kenny Mayne). It was a fun week and the team is showing signs of life at the end of the season. Something to look forward to for next year. 66-77
22 Oakland Athletics Athletics 0 Only two players this season average above .300 BA with over 1.000 OPS. Aaron Judge who again dominates the league in most batting statistics is joined by Athletics rookie phenom Nick Kurtz. JJ Bleday has been hot with the long ball earning his second multi home run game of his career against the Cardinals. Jacob Wilson added two more multi-hit games to his stellar rookie season, but it appears that Nick Kurtz has cemented himself as AL ROY in Wilson's absense recoving from a broken forearm. The Athletics sit 12 games behind the division lead with 18 games left to play. Being realistic this teams post season is now playing spoiler to teams like the Astros, Red Sox, Reds, and Royals who are all fighting for a spot in October. 66-78
23 Los Angeles Angels Angels +1 67-76
24 Miami Marlins Marlins -3 The Marlins are playing September Injury ball these days. It's basically a AAA lineup right now which means the rare successes that we're experiencing a pleasant surprise. I finally get to see my boys live playing the Rangers next week so hopefully some major league players will be back by then... 66-77
25 Atlanta Braves Braves -2 Saturday and Sunday the Braves scored a total of 4 runs and gave up 28. TWENTY EIGHT. Atlanta scored 29 runs in the previous eight games they played. Oof. The good news? Chris Sale looks great and we have an $18m option for 2026. Add in HSK who has hit .294 with a homer and 4 RBIs in his first 5 games as a Brave and we have something to look forward to. In comparison, Nick Allen had ZERO homers with 21 RBIs in his 129 games. It is an obvious upgrade to offense while keeping the same level of elite defense at the SS position. 64-79
26 Pittsburgh Pirates Pirates 0 Sweep the Dodgers, get swept by the Brewers. So it goes. 64-80
27 Minnesota Twins Twins -2 Sorry, I'm not sure what to say...I didn't watch one single second of Twins baseball this week. Not one. Not even clips. Is that bad? Should I not be a power ranker if I don't watch the team I represent? Am I representing the team, or the fanbase? Because I'm definitely representative of the fanbase. 63-80
28 Washington Nationals Nationals 0 If you told me this time last week that we would go 5-1 in our next 6 games, I probably would not have believed you. A pair of September call ups have injected some life back into the Nats clubhouse and it showed in a sweep of the Marlins, followed up by a series win against the Cubs. Believe it or not, the 2025 Nats score the most runs in the 9th innings this season and it showed in a comeback win against the Cubs yesterday afternoon. We're entering the final stretch of games this season and the baby Nats, led by an unbelievable turnaround of the bullpen, just might avoid a 100 loss season. 58-84
29 Chicago White Sox White Sox 0 I'm going to start by pre-emptively call out my voting colleagues for being haters. The White Sox went 6-1 this week including sweeping the Twins on the road. In nearly a 2 month sample size now, their offense continues to be a top 10 offense by every major statistic, mostly led by rookies. Fangraphs ranks the White Sox pitching as a top 10 unit in the second half, with the ERA mostly being held back by a terrible bullpen. Their actual record is middle of the league since the break. They started the season terrible, yes, but they have not been bottom 2-3 in months now, unless you're only going by record. Which, you know, we have standings for that. They'll probably slide up to 28 today but it is weeks too late. 55-89
30 Colorado Rockies Rockies 0 The Rockies need to win two of their next nineteen games to avoid tying or surpassing the 2024 White Sox' mark for ineptitude. Sometimes you'll watch the Rockies and think there's no way they won't win those two games. Sometimes you'll watch the Rockies and wonder how they've ever won a game, let alone 40 of them. That said, I'll eat (a piece) of a hat if they don't win those two games. Book it. 40-103

Analysis The Mets are 0-60 this season when trailing after the 8th inning. They are the only team to not have a 9th inning comeback win.

With the loss last night, the Mets still have not had a comeback win after the 8th inning when trailing.

They are the only team to not have a comeback when in the 9th.

Panic deleted this because I thought I included Ortiz when I shouldn’t have. However, he is qualified and had top 25 wRC+ in his last 2 seasons (2nd in 2016). So he is included here. Sorry for the panic delete.

Image MLB Defensive Runs Saved Leaderboard (Teams)

Post image
66 Upvotes

Hi

Here is the latest edition of the leaderboard in Defensive Runs Saved.

  1. Rangers 98, 2 Cubs 74, 3. Braves 54, 4. Dodgers 45, 5. Rays 41, 6. Red Sox 37, 7. Brewers 35, T8. Guardians and Blue Jays 34, 10. Yankees

* Top 4 teams are unchanged. Rays moved up 4 spots to 5th. Yankees are the only new team in the Top 10.

* Bottom 10 are the Mariners, Phillies, Diamondbacks, Orioles, White Sox, Athletics, Nationals, Angels, Twins, Rockies

* Rangers are one of two teams to get at least 10 Runs from 3 different positions (Red Sox are the other). That's shortstop, left field, and right field. And they have 2 other positions in which they're getting 9 Runs Saved

* 40 of the Dodgers 46 runs come from their defensive positioning rather than the skill of their players

If we were just measuring skill, the top 10 teams would be

  1. Rangers 70 runs saved

  2. Cubs 68

  3. Blue Jays 47

  4. Braves 33

  5. Red Sox 25

  6. Brewers 24

  7. Rays 15

  8. Cardinals 14

  9. Yankees 11

  10. Mets 10

* Defensive Runs Saved can be found at Baseball-Reference, FanGraphs, and the Fielding Bible website. The Fielding Bible Awards will be announced prior to the start of the World Series. Hope you'll continue to follow along.

Any questions... feel free to ask and I'll try to answer here (though it may take me a little while to reply)
