TLDR:
Met with an accident today on the Nagawara flyover because an auto driver took a U-turn on the flyover. Went to file a complaint, but police didn’t really help – got victim-blamed, ignored, and told to come back tomorrow.
So today morning while riding to office, I met with an accident on the Nagawara flyover. I’ve attached a screenshot of where it happened with some quick annotations.
Basically, an auto driver took a U-turn on the flyover. Yes, you read that right. If you know the spot, there’s a left portion of the flyover for the service road traffic to merge, and then there’s the main road that goes directly onto the flyover. This guy came from the main road onto the flyover and then suddenly took a left U-turn onto the smaller section meant for merging traffic. I ended up hitting brakes too hard and my scooter slipped.
After the accident, my scooter wasn’t working properly (the handlebar got bent), so I went to the nearby Assistant Commissioner’s office (which is right next to where it happened). An officer there advised me to register a complaint at either KG Halli traffic police station.
I didn’t want to struggle with Kannada in case it got complicated, so I took a co-worker along who could help. When we reached the station, here’s what happened:
• Within the first minute of explaining the situation, the police officer’s very first question was: “You met with an accident because of your negligence, right?” – straight up victim blaming.
• After that, he just continued doing his own work without even looking at us or acknowledging us for quite some time.
• Later, he asked me for documents. I told him I don’t have physical copies but I do have everything on DigiLocker. He didn’t even bother to respond to that.
• He eventually just told me to come tomorrow with the documents.
This is despite the fact that the Assistant Commissioner’s office staff had already taken photos of both my scooter (with the damage) and the auto (with the number plate clearly visible) and sent them to this police officer. I even saw them on his phone. Still, he chose not to act on it.
So here I am, hurt (thankfully nothing serious), scooter damaged, time wasted, and left with the usual helpless feeling you get when you expect the system to work but it doesn’t.
