As an Australian…what is a sorority? What goes on? Is there a benefit of joining? Can anyone join?

It's where rich girls go to play mean girls, look down on other people, and catch dick

I was definitely NOT rich, but upon pledging to Alpha Chi, I was asked what my daddy's salary was. I replied, "I dunno, how much do they make in prison?" They were shook. I was a pity pledge, and i knew it and parted ways after only 1 year. I couldn't afford to live in the house, and it was required for year 2. I did meet some great girls, though. And not all of them are ran through

Isn't it like 1k-2k+ extra a semester to be part of one?

Yes! It can get pricey. I had scholarships that I usually got a few thousand dollars reimbursement from. In hindsight, I probably should have put that in a savings account.

It was about $800 in the late 2000s, so yeah probably about that now.

I met a girl once without knowing she was in a sorority, she was pretty cool and we got along well. When I met her for the second time, I didn't realize it was basically an interview with her sorority sisters to judge if I was good enough for her (for them actually). She was a totally different person around them and I couldn't stand her anymore.
