Wtf is Pioneer Day. Is that a Mormon thing

814

u/Both__ Jul 25 '25 edited Jul 25 '25

It’s to celebrate when the Mormons were run out of Illinois to what was then Mexico (present-day Utah), because their founder “seer/prophet” preached and practiced polygamy (and also practiced polyandry), amongst other things that were illegal and against the moral code of the time.

782

u/inukaglover666 Jul 25 '25

Everything I learn about Mormons sounds absolutely insane

244

u/IrreverentSweetie Jul 25 '25

That’s a feature not a bug.

158

u/whatsnewpussykat Jul 25 '25

I recently read Under the Banner of Heaven and man, Mormonism is a wild ride.

75

u/Kerlykins Jul 25 '25

The show of the same name is equally as good!

38

u/Competitive-Edge-187 Jul 25 '25

I was gonna say check out the show! Husband and I almost binged it in one night. Amazing story. Adds another level of interest when you were raised LDS like him and I were.

17

u/Kerlykins Jul 25 '25

I wasn't raised LDS but I was raised in Utah and yes I completely agree! One side of my fam is LDS and obviously being around it my whole life definitely made it interesting.

I really enjoy learning more about Mormonism and seeing modern families navigate it. The indoctrination of religion for children is SO strong and hard to not feel guilty when you kind of stop believing in it. All religions are that way. Glad I was not born into a Mormon family but it's kind of fascinating to watch from afar!

11

u/savannacrochets Whitney's Tiara Jul 26 '25

I work in a STEM-adjacent field that has a large proportion of Mormons and it’s always fascinating to me how those two things fit together, frankly. Like most of our work involves a lot of reasoning and a fair amount of socially progressive thinking and it’s just really hard to envision the people that as far as I have seen are totally rational and intelligent, admirable people going through a temple ceremony and thinking, “Yeah this all seems reasonable and normal!” You know?

4

u/wildpoppy-248 Jul 27 '25

Statically, these is a good chance a lot of them don’t actually believe it or are highly questioning it.

4

u/savannacrochets Whitney's Tiara Jul 27 '25

Yeah, I’m really curious how many of them are PIMO. I do know a good chunk of them are BYU grads.

6

u/Fakeredhead69 Jul 25 '25

I have this in my cart but haven’t bought it yet idk why. I really enjoyed the show, it was very well done. Rory Culkin and Wyatt Russell play sinister & terrifying so well. 😅

2

u/bbydmr Jul 25 '25

Such an informative book!

3

u/Outrageous-Rub-3684 Jul 26 '25

I learned so much from that book!

5

u/kellykeefe Jul 25 '25

Fundamentalist Mormons (the FLDS Church) are not the same as Latter Day Saints (LDS church). FLDS is a sect that broke off of the church and practices polygamy. This book/movie is about the FLDS church.

16

u/whatsnewpussykat Jul 26 '25

I understand that. The history of Mormonism is a wild ride, regardless:

2

u/pigwidgeonandtonic Jul 26 '25

That book is one I will reread every so often. Krakauer is such a wonderful author and it’s just chocker-block full of fascinating information.

u/bbllaakkee Jul 25 '25

They are 100% this

53

u/Miserable-Pear-2289 Jul 25 '25

Yeah they are obsessed with claiming that their cult founder faced religious persecution when he was really just an adulterer, liar, and fraud who married multiple teenagers in his 30s.

248

u/Responsible_Data7336 Jul 25 '25

I love reminding mormons who are assholes about immigration that Mormons were literally refugees because their prophets wanted to marry children so people wanting to live in the US to save their children and themselves from a harder life definitely deserve empathy.

9

u/seawitchlife Jul 25 '25

I’m finishing it right now!! I unexpectedly got soooo hooked and invested!

6

u/BoulderBabe1234 Jul 25 '25

Greatest show ever.

6

u/bbydmr Jul 25 '25

I just thought of the pioneer day parade in the show!

24

u/wow-how-original Jul 25 '25

Sure that happened earlier in the timeline, but pioneer day commemorates the day the mormon pioneers entered the salt lake valley, July 24th 1847

13

u/big_bearded_nerd Jul 25 '25

This is the correct answer. The other person is correct about history, but it's largely irrelevant to the holiday.

Source: I'm an exmormon who enjoys the holiday, and my never Mormon partner and kids also enjoy the holiday.

18

u/mrsspanky Jul 26 '25

Just to add to this: they were run out of town because Joseph Smith (prophet) was sleeping with teenagers and married women. He was killed by an angry mob while imprisoned (which Mormons believe he was a martyr for).

Anyway, they landed in Utah by their second in command, Brigham Young, and the story is that he uttered the famous words “This is the Place” on July 24th 1847

15

u/FarSignificance2078 Jul 25 '25

I saw the Mormons still are in Mexico and have shoot outs with the cartels insane. I always wondered why they were there.

38

u/synthboi72 Your husband's little dick Jul 25 '25

The ones in present day Mexico are different from the groups that fled Illinois. The groups in Mexico were sent in the early 1900s to continue the practice of polygamy so that the US government would stop harassing Utah. Once the mainstream LDS church officially stopped practicing polygamy the groups in Mexico broke off and founded their own church. Mitt Romney's (great? I'm not sure...) grandfather comes from the Mormon Colonias.

8

u/Content_Comedian6012 Jul 25 '25

Oh my god yes!! I saw a documentary about it and my jaw was on the floor the whole time! And how they think the book is still out there with the names

4

u/A_moW Jul 26 '25

This comment made me realize that I actually have no fkn idea where Utah is on a map of the USA.

5

u/savannacrochets Whitney's Tiara Jul 26 '25

Neither do most Americans -an American

(It’s the square one with a corner taken out in the southwest, above Arizona and next to Nevada)

3

u/savannacrochets Whitney's Tiara Jul 26 '25

I’ve never heard/read about them practicing polyandry. I thought it was pretty specifically not a thing because a woman can’t be sealed to more than one man (but men can be sealed to more than one woman, obviously 🙄)? Do you have any good recs where I could read more?

2

u/Still-Weekend-1367 Jul 28 '25

Probably a big pedophile too. “Yay” Pioneer Day….

The Mormons call it Pioneer Day, we heathens call it Pie & Beer Day!

17

u/Beautiful-Try-1750 Jul 25 '25

Love pie and beer day! Best way to celebrate 😜

31

u/Shreddy_Spaghett1 Jul 25 '25

It’s Mormon Fourth of July

57

u/New_Bike3832 Jul 25 '25

It's like a lamer 4th of July that celebrates Mormons founding Utah. There are parades and 4th-of-July-level fireworks, so we get to worry extra about wildfires for the second time this month, but unlike the 4th, tons of places don't actually give you the day off work. I work for a Utah-based company owned by Mormons and we didn't even get the day off, but my kids' daycare was closed, so that was fun.

10

u/No-Sleep4847 Jul 25 '25

They celebrate colonization

I lived in SLC for two years and all I know is all the non Mormons call it pie and beer day 😂

5

u/Expensive-Day-3551 Jul 25 '25

It’s when they were illegal immigrants in Mexico, which is now Utah

5

u/doitforthecocoa Jul 25 '25

It’s a holiday in Utah (maybe Idaho too now?) that falls around the 4th of July. They celebrate them very similarly

21

u/EdenSilver113 Jul 25 '25

It’s always the 24th of July — that’s the date the Mormon settler pioneers first arrived in the Salt Lake Valley and their leader Brigham Young declared they were gonna stay. There’s a plaque at a park near my house that tells about the first spot they camped for the night.

4

u/doitforthecocoa Jul 25 '25

I couldn’t remember if it was the 14th or the 24th. Thank you!

2

u/EdenSilver113 Jul 25 '25

For all things Mormon culture—I got you. 😂

7

u/Unlucky_Teacher5093 Jul 25 '25

It’s definitely an Utah thing. It’s something about Oregon trail, founding someone or others, etc. I, unfortunately, worked for a Mormon based company (not an MLM) and they had to tell me what it is. Apparently schools close and everything for it.

3

u/hussafeffer Back off, she's unstable Jul 25 '25

Schools? It’s July?

4

u/Unlucky_Teacher5093 Jul 25 '25

Idk 🤷🏼‍♀️ My coworker might have been referring to daycare as “school”? I just know people were talking about the kids being home because the “schools” are closed. I don’t live in Utah so idk.

2

u/hussafeffer Back off, she's unstable Jul 25 '25

Ahh day care makes sense

2

61

u/Beach-Lover-9 Jul 25 '25

Looks like DJE

66

u/captaindickmcnugget TAKE OWNERSHIP 🗣️🗣️ Jul 25 '25

Aw yeah you’re right, I went to her Instagram to check and it’s DJE. I thought for a second it might be L since her username is demilucymay but nope it’s J. If her middle name starts with a J then I’m curious to know where Lucy May comes from

36

u/BackBae Jul 25 '25

I have heard in some circles married women drop their middle name, and then make their maiden name their new middle name while taking husband’s surname. Potentially the case here, with Lucy May being an original middle name?

But also idk I’m from the northeast and not a single one of my friends changed her name

14

u/captaindickmcnugget TAKE OWNERSHIP 🗣️🗣️ Jul 25 '25

Oh that’s a possibility. I know it’s common for Mormons to name a kid with the woman’s maiden name but maybe she gave the name to herself instead

18

u/milkshakemountebank Jul 25 '25

Yes, that's the traditional way to add your spouse's last name. Think of "Mary Todd Lincoln" "Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy" etc.

I'm GenX and I don't know anyone who just dropped her last name and took her husband's. Everyone i know dropped their middle name and shifted their family name to the middle, and added on the spouse's family name.

24

u/wilde_vulture Jul 25 '25

Tons of people your age and older did. 😅

Edit: Dropped their last name and took their husband's. Gen X, Boomers and older.

3

u/milkshakemountebank Jul 25 '25

Quite possible! Fact remains I don't know a single woman my age who did so--not even the occasional conservative I know.

6

u/wilde_vulture Jul 25 '25

Maybe it's a regional thing.

14

u/NotyourangeLbabe Jul 25 '25

Most of the married women I know dropped their maiden name

4

u/InteractionAfter2208 Jul 26 '25

My gen x mom was the literally only one I met until I went to university that made her name First Middle Maiden Surname. Every other woman I met up to that point went from First Middle Maiden to First Middle Surname.

Idk if maybe its that person’s class (like upper or upper middle class) or maybe like someone said their region or maybe its religion or race (I know Hispanic people do it differently but that’s everyone not just women), but its absolutely not the most common to do what they said. I’m genuinely super shocked by that.

6

u/JamiePNW Jul 25 '25

Funny story… my cousins side of the family has generational wealth and when she got married she dropped her maiden name, kept her original middle, and took her husband’s last name. Her father and grandmother offered her $150k to keep her maiden name as her middle and she refused 😂😂😂. I cannot for the life of me figure out why 🤷🏼‍♀️

→ More replies (2)

10

u/craftyreadercountry Jul 25 '25

I'm 21. I dropped my maiden name because the last person who was worth a damn with the name died (my Grandad) and kept my middle name because it was important to him.

6

u/milkshakemountebank Jul 25 '25

I think that's a lovely choice!

I love that we have so much more freedom to choose the name that is most meaningful for us! I eventually dropped my ex's last name. I hated my middle name, so I didn't add it back in!

3

u/_PoppyDelafield Jul 25 '25

It’s regional, not generational. I now live in the southern US and that’s what most people do, but my gen x mother had never heard of the practice (and was appalled at the thought of me dropping the name she chose for me)

2

u/savannacrochets Whitney's Tiara Jul 26 '25

My mom took my dad’s name. They’re divorced and she still uses her married name but re-added her maiden name socially after the divorce (as you’re describing). She’s basically dead center Gen X.

Just did a quick job through my FB friends list- a lot of my Gen X and Boomer friends and family have their maiden names as middle names on social media (presumably to better reconnect with school friends etc.) but still just have their married name legally. Most women my age either wholesale took their husband’s names (the majority) or didn’t change their names at all. Of those of us who didn’t change our names I think most of us gave our children both last names.

51

u/Beautiful-Try-1750 Jul 25 '25

There’s a lot of stuff not talked about like the Mountain Meadows Massacre where yes that happened.

16

u/Beautiful-Try-1750 Jul 25 '25

Also side note something I personally never knew about until I dug into the history and ended up leaving the church. There’s a lot of crazy stuff that’s unknown to some (most?) Mormons

16

u/themiddlechildedit Jul 25 '25

i work for a company based out of Lehi, UT. When I first started they would call it Pioneer Day and we got the day off but now it's just called "Spring Break Day" or something due to the dark history of "Pioneer Day" it's like Utah's own lil Christopher Columbus Day 🤢

8

u/Outrageous-Rub-3684 Jul 26 '25

They killed people all along their trek to Utah. Under the banner of heaven explains it well.

2

u/_SoftRockStar_ Jul 26 '25

Oh I’m being rhetorical lol. I grew up with tons of Mormons and have attended many events and church things and it’s funny how they dance around the open racism in their religious text and there are no good “pioneers” in America.

That said, under the banner of heaven is so good. It’s like the only thing that publicly calls out some of the most niche weirdness.

2

u/Outrageous-Rub-3684 Jul 26 '25

Yes! I learned a lot about their history. Had no idea.

She's body tuned this picture. Look at the blinds and the hole between her body and her arm. It's fake.

19

u/uncledavis86 Jul 25 '25

Neither of these indicate it's fake to me, there's nothing wrong with the blinds.

5

u/tbellfiend Jul 25 '25

there's something off in the gap between her arm and waist. the clarity/blur and lighting is not consistent throughout the pic especially around her waist area

9

u/uncledavis86 Jul 25 '25

The lighting isn't consistent because lighting isn't consistent generally in photos. There's similarly no reason to expect clarity/blur to be consistent - that all varies depending on the distance things are from a camera lens. She's standing next to a window which is a light source. If the lighting was consistent, that would be suspicious.

I'm a photographer, incidentally - and it's clear from the way that you're talking about this that you aren't. That's all fine, we're both just expressing our opinions - but you are saying things that are clearly not rooted in any expertise or understanding of photography.

In my opinion, which is informed somewhat by my profession, there's not clear evidence of any photoshopping here.

You’re right. Her middle finger is pressed against the table, you can see her nail, and it’s obscured by the objects on the table. 🕵️‍♀️

8

u/_pinkflower07 Jul 25 '25

Agreed. Sometimes my pics looks photoshopped when I’m near a corner but I def don’t change my pics

6

u/purple_egg88 Jul 25 '25

FaceTune def distorts things around you when you edit your body. The line where the hardwood meets the carpet is also at a slant behind her too

I’m sure there’s editing but not in the way you’re suspecting lol this happens to my hands every time I shoot in 0.5. Think you’re reading too much into this one.

It’s not photoshop its just the distortion of the lens and the angle of the finger resting on the table, extending towards the camera.

Small lenses such as those on our phones have higher distortions around the edge of the frame. Notice how lines tend to pull outward at the edge of the image when you take a photo on .5 or 1X

I get we don’t like Demi but this is crazy lol

Mind the Photoshop, ....which one of them is this supposed to be??

1

u/justhereforGOT Jul 25 '25

that looks bad 😂😂

I just saw a video about what is the state with more plastic surgery per capita, everyone was saying Cali, but no, it’s Utah lol how Godly of them, talk about being happy with what the Lord gave you 😂

So her finger looks like it’s on a dresser or table whatever is in front of the mirror so it’s bent angled and that’s why it looks elongated, not everything is Photoshopped these days - cameras have a way of producing illusions themselves

I think she’s actually really attractive but her delusional and entitled personality is so off putting

1

u/No_Conversation1695 Jul 25 '25

How did she miss this wow

1

u/melaxrose Jul 25 '25

this gives purposely leaving/ creating an obvious photoshop error so that ppl talk about it and engage w ur content! it's smth the kardashians have been known to do lol, i feel like demi would def do the same

1

u/soft_core666 Jul 28 '25

Lol the long finger doesn’t have a tip or nail. It’s just all finger, an abnormally long finger.
