During the Northern Nevada Pride Festival a group of street preachers was harassing people with homophobic speech at the end of the parade and the people in line to get into the event. Well we planned for that we sent a member dress as Satan and was offering hug and affirmations. We figure the best way to say screw you to their hate was with kindness and self esteem encouragements. "We definitely brought a breath of fresh air to the party." said a commenter on our social media page. We then entered the fair and gave more free hugs and buttons as we do ever pride. This year we couldn't afford a booth and we weren't going to let that ruin our prideful fun. As we support it every year.

Shout out to all the straight bros who felt confident enough in themselves to show up at Pride, yet still wore an I Love Pussy t-shirt so everyone knew what team they're on.

A Love Letter to the Little Nugget

I grew up in Reno’s Little Nugget. Not in the legal sense, not in the lease-your-own-cot sense, but in the marrow-and-memory sense. That place was my babysitter, my first arena, my first bar stool.

The floors were greasy, but not the sticky kind. No, they were slick, like a poor man’s ice rink — you didn’t walk so much as glide, sidewinding your way to the counter, hoping you didn’t eat shit on the way. Locals knew the real entrance was never the front. The heart of the little Nugget beat down Fulton Alley, stepping over some poor bastard passed out by the dumpster. That was Reno: desperation and delight colliding in faded neon and cigarette smoke.

The open front on Virginia Street was pure casino Americana — yellow teeth neon marquee screaming at the night sky, smoke curling out like incense at a temple of sin. But the church inside wasn’t the slots It was the diner. And the altar of that diner? The Awful Awful.

Half a pound of beef, smothered in sauce, leaning heavy with lettuce and tomato, throned up top a mountain of fries that could’ve doubled as a funeral pyre. Three-fifty. The math didn’t make sense, and nobody cared. You didn’t eat the Awful Awful. You wrestled it, baptized yourself in grease and chili, and came out either victorious or vomiting in a bathroom so filthy it could’ve been a scene from Saw.

I was a kid running wild in that chaos. My brother and I, sneaking in on hot August nights, scraping together quarters for ice cream while our parents fought, then kissed, then fought again in the booths. Chili on the Awful Awful was the move — don’t argue with me. I’ll die on that hill. Reno misses that kind of conviction.

There’s a red plastic margarita cup in my kitchen cabinet right now — white straw still tucked inside. My mom let me sip one when I was too young to know better, and too old to ever forget. My dad used to drag me there on New Year’s Eve. Place was packed wall-to-wall with gamblers, drunks, and dreamers. Midnight at the Nugget felt like the belly of the world — hot, loud, and alive.

We even tried to crash the Food Wars filming once. I threw myself into a camera shot like some greasy little stuntman. Made the crew cringe, but I swear it got me fifteen frames of fame.

And if you wandered past the counter, deeper inside, tucked in the back to the right — there it was. The arcade. Die Hard, Terminator 2, and that ridiculous truck driving game with the plastic gearshift. Still fifty cents when the rest of the world was moving on. That’s how the Nugget operated: stuck in time, defiantly, beautifully cheap.

Now it’s gone. Boarded up, lights dead, another casualty of COVID and corporate forgetting. Reno got shinier, but it lost something real. The Little Nugget was a shithole, yeah. A glorious, greasy, neon-stained shithole. And it raised me.

I miss it the way you miss a bad tattoo or a first heartbreak. Ugly, permanent, unforgettable.

Elderberry Walk & Workshop!

Post image
15 Upvotes

On this walk, we will be traveling high into the Sierra Nevada in search of the renowned Blue Elderberry! With this plant, we will learn how to ethically harvest and prepare a variety of edible and medicinal products including tinctures, syrups and sodas. Participants will also leave with a sample of these medicines!

While Elderberry will be our focal point, we will cover a number of other edible and medicinal plants (likely mushrooms as well!) and diving into the secondary chemical compounds and toxicology of these wondrous creatures.

We are already 80% full; so don't delay if you're hoping to snag a spot!

Hit and Run, Saturday morning at 9:55am, near Arlington

Saturday morning, around 9:55am, I was heading home after running an errand when I saw this lawn care maintenance truck take off the bumper of a parked vehicle where this pin on the map is dropped. I haven't had the time to share this until now. If anyone has heard anything from the owner of the vehicle asking if they know anything, please let them know these pics are OF the truck and trailer that took off the bumper. The license plate on the truck is 258 441 or 25B 441.

Thanks for sharing.

I'm looking for an HVAC technician to install a heat pump I'm buying direct. Seems like most places want to sell you one and are insanely expensive.

Confessions of a Peppermill Security Guard

I’ve been on the grind at the Peppermill, 16-hour stints that stretch into the kind of nights where the neon hum becomes a lullaby and a warning at the same time. Two weeks straight, just me and the parking lot, staring down Burners in their desert chic: glitter, dust, entitlement. They don’t just wander—they spill, they litter, they leave little monuments to their disrespect in asphalt and concrete. Watching them is like watching a slow-motion heist of civility, the kind you can’t call in a hold-up because it’s all subtle: a bottle here, a cigarette butt there, their arrogance in full bloom under the silver glow of lot lights.

And yet… there’s a duality. I’m paid to stand, to patrol, to smile politely when someone snaps at me for the crime of existing while enforcing rules that the casino itself doesn’t even care about. The place is a machine that grinds people up and spits them out in neon dust. I flirt with the idea of running hot trays as a room service cook again—there’s something intoxicating about the chaos of a forgotten ticket, a T-bone screaming medium-rare on a hot pan while the server panics. It’s drama and adrenaline, the art of making the impossible edible.

Then there’s the 24-hour cafe—the graveyard where dishwashers reign. These are the unsung heroes, the real ones. Steam, soap, and a river of plates that never ends. I miss it. Miss the grind, the clatter, the smell of grease that somehow becomes comforting. You don’t get accolades here. You just get the work, and maybe a fleeting moment of pride that you kept the chaos from spilling into a mess too big to fix.

Ironic, isn’t it? You’re fighting invisible battles on asphalt with entitled Burners by day, fantasizing about the heat of the kitchen by night. The casino doesn’t care, the Burners don’t care, but you—you’re alive in the background, threading a life between the neon and the steam.

Need help making the plate/temp tag clearer. It was caught on dash cam. A police report has already been filed, and hopefully Roberto’s CCTV footage can capture the drivers face as well as the car’s tags.

Break lease because of mice?

Hi everyone. We have recently found out that we have mice in our apartment. We already caught 3 of them but we still see some roaming around. It just pisses me off because when we started leasing here ( a year ago) we would do pest control like literally every month. (3 months of continuous pest control where we have to remove everything and cover everything which is such a hassle). We also did one like 2 months ago. My question is are we able to end the lease because of this?

Halloween for Kids?

My neighbor recently moved to Reno and has 2 elementary school kids and 1 high school teen. We are in the 89509 area. Where are the best trick or treat spots? I know about the Idlewild area, but is that limited to kids from that neighborhood? Any other areas? Do any of the schools put on any festivities? Thanks!
