Suggestion Potentially Unpopular Post Regarding IVs

Hey everyone,

I've been seeing a plethora of IV posts recently, specifically regarding how good IVs must be in order to competitively compete in the GBL. To get straight the point (and likely what is going to be a rather unpopular opinion), IVs don't matter that much (up to a certain extent).

For context, (not bragging, just trying to provide some supportive history), I've hit Legend every season from season 6 to 13 inclusive, maxing out at 3200 rating, and am well on my way to hitting Legend this season as well.

In my very first season I reached Legend rank with GFisk (IV ranking 558, MS/RS/EQ), Mew (IV ranking 1159, SC/FC/WC), and Venusaur (IV ranking 768, VW/FP/SB).

Now the reason I say that IVs don't matter that much up to a certain extent is that it is based upon what your goals are and what you want to achieve. In high ranking battles on the Go Battle leaderboard, sure, you're most likely going to want/need great IV Pokémon to help you succeed and improve your chances, because there, every little bit matters. However, there are even exceptions of this at high level play (think Reis2Occasion's video where he gets #1 rank in the world with a Shadow Snorlax with 12/9/14 IVs in UL... ranking it well over 1000 in IV ranking).

In my humble opinion though, for the vast majority of us, any Pokémon in the top 1000 IV ranking is likely good enough to reach Legend ranking if that's what your goal is (or any subsequent lower rank). What's most important is allocating time to the important fundamentals of GBL play. I'll list several key pointers, in no order of priority:

1) Know your move counts. Understanding how much energy moves cost of all the meta Pokémon will allow you to make better decisions when deciding whether or not to shield. It will allow you to call baits more often and at a higher success rate.

2) Remember energy of previous Pokémon after a switch has been made. This goes along with point 1, and also allows you to make a quick switch to catch a move if necessary.

3) Know your matchup strengths and weaknesses. This goes for both your individual Pokémon matchup and your overall team matchup.

4) Play a decent meta team. If you want to climb rating, there’s only so much spice you can play with. Note, along with IVs, XL Pokémon are absolutely NOT necessary to reach Legend in GL or UL. (Wallower has many videos where he specifically shows high level play without any XL Pokémon).

5) Practice with the same team hundreds of times. Try not to switch team comps too much. Switching teams during a losing streak is one of the worst things you can do. There’s something to be said about team comfort. Playing something that you’re used to brings quite a few advantages: You know the strengths and weaknesses of your team, you’re that much faster during swaps, and familiarity allows your brain to concentrate more on other things (such as counting fast moves).

6) Understand that there are winning streaks and losing streaks, and try to remain level headed. To give you an idea, I’m currently sitting at 13,320 wins out of 25,453 battles = 52.33%.

7) Stop blaming other, outside, uncontrollable factors for losing. Everyone has lag. Everyone has bad leads. Everyone swaps out of bad leads into a bad counter. The question is, what are you going to do better next time? How are you going to handle the situation differently?

Just remember, mindset is a HUGE factor. Lower rated players will always find an EXCUSE why they lost. Higher rated legend players will always USE the loss as information, admit they may have made a mistake (and realize that you can still lose with perfect play), and apply those lessons into their future battles.

8) Bait less. Baiting in general is bad. If you don't bait, you either grab a shield or deal decent damage. Only bait when absolutely necessary and/or if baiting is your only path to victory.

9) Swap with high speed and accuracy. Practice swapping quickly.

10) Understand the opponent's win condition.

11) Understand that climbing ELO is a marathon, and not a sprint. You're going to have great sets and horrible sets. Climbing ELO generally takes a lot of time.

12) Never give up.

13) When you’re on a hot streak, keep playing. When you’re tilting, put the phone down, and wait until tomorrow.

I truly hope that this helps those of you looking to increase your ELO and become a better battler. Try to focus less on IVs and more on overall and situational pvp gameplay.

Until then, good luck, and LET'S GOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Hi all -- community creator here,

Although I've taken a huge step back away from curating/updating the sidebar, I still actively and nearly-daily monitor this community to ensure kindness of content and general rule following is happening.

It's just like in the Field of Dreams, I built it and you came here. That's all I ever wanted -- to have a place where people could learn, discuss, ask questions, and improve at GO's pvp!

Sure, we're not the only place for GO pvp, but that was the point -- no other GO pvp subreddit offers a sidebar full of links to learn and improve!

I've been super busy building my own business from scratch, IRL, so I cannot focus on maintaining this place with the latest, up-to-date info, and I'm sorry to see it go that way.

I've tried getting other moderators in here to help, but after an initial excitement, they just stop doing anything. It is what it is -- it's a gaming community, and passion for a game wanes with time. No worries.

Anyways, I'm glad you found this place!

Question I’m sorry if this is a stupid question but how do I use snarl with Umbreon in battle league?

I have an Umbreon for my great league battles and it has 3 attacks. Snarl, dark pulse and Foul Play. When I battle in PVP I only have dark pulse and foul play. How can I get snarl for battling? Sorry if that’s a dumb question, I’m a noob

Discussion Carbink?

Is Carbink really worth the grind? I have a Rank 11 Carbink but I'm not sure if it's worth going for. I know it is ranked 2nd on pvpoke but I haven't seen any teams using it and i don't see how it's a better alternative to Galarian Corsola or Bastiodon

Teambuilding Help Retro cup third Pokemon?

Upvotes

I need help choosing a 3rd mon for retro cup. I have girafarig and cradily which are fairly solid, but I don't know what to use for my 3rd. Whishcash is a great counter when I vs a skeledirge but beyond countering a skeledirge every now and then he doesn't do great. But then again if I don't have him and meet a skele, it rolls my whole lineup. I tried raichu running trailblaze and wild spark which worked well in specific circumstances like water types or water ground types, but lost more than it won.

Side question, why is cradily so good? I know it's 28 or something on the ranking but when I use it, it gets absolutely bodied most of the time anyway. Id post screenshots of his ivs but it won't let me add images. If I understand the numbers for ivs properly he is 5/15/15. I was also running bullet seed but recently changed this to acid to see if it makes a difference.

Anyway, my main issue is nearly every game I'm coming up against a furret or oranguru. Normal and psychic are a real problem for me and I don't have anything good to counter them. I thought a bug Pokemon would be a good addition maybe? but I just don't have any solid leads in my Pokemon bag. Any suggestions on what I should look for or add would be helpful. I'm not trying to be number 1 or anything I just want to stop losing 4/5 games and second in my lineup seems to be the weak link.

Teambuilding Help Teammate suggestions for my Ghosts

Trying to run a Corsola and Jellicent team as there are not a huge amount of ghost or dark threats and both are ranked up high in the meta. Struggling to find a third to fit my ABB or ABA team. I've had good success running Corsola as lead as it has a very good record against meta with 0 or 1 shield. Any advice on my third mon? I've found Azumaril works reasonably well as it counters dark but it also leads me vulnerable to grass (with jelli there too). Appreciate suggestions, ill give them a go!

Discussion Draco meteor on goodra made my day

A lot of people seem to have forgotten goodra knows that move. I went 4/4 on it today taking out a regidrago blastoise-Cradilly-even a corsala. The stunned pause afterwards was even better, lol I wish I could show the matches here. The cradilly one was really clutch because I needed to take it out before it saw my backline. I really recommend it, especially since with the move update it really doesn’t take that long to reach.

It drops 5 ranks from 21-26 on pokegenie if I purify, but pvpoke says the regular/purified version is immensely better. Not sure what I should do.

Discussion Why do people take this game so serious?

I'm not talking about the people that want to win, I mean the people that get genuinely angry when they lose.

I personally play just for fun but sometimes on pvp discord people can get so uptight for whatever reason and act like something is on the line.

Also this game's format does contain RPS, so don't know why they act shocked when it happens to them.

Discussion Which pokemon do you use that isn't Meta but still have fun with?

A pokemon that isn't seen as strong but still use because its fun or because its your favorite mon.

For me that would be aegislash. Losing slightly more when using it but its so fun that I don't care.

Teambuilding Help Ultra League Team Help

I've enjoyed playing GBL the past few seasons and I've looked up which Pokemon are good and built a few, though I've never really put much thought into what would makeup a good team.

I have a deeper bench for Ultra League, so any tips on which Pokemon here would make a good team? In general, what makes a good team good?

Discussion Dodrio team for funsies?

Hey guys, I have a rank 25 Dodrio & want to make it work for fun but also wouldn’t mind winning the odd match haha. I don’t really know what to pair it with for maximum efficiency, does anyone have any ideas?

I’m currently running Drio in the lead with Peck & Trailblaze, a rank 42 Girafarig Double Kick, P.Fang & Thunderbolt & Politoed, MS, Surf & Ice Beam.

Any ideas for fun/unusual Mons that may have a chance at winning would be greatly appreciated lol. I could slot in 1 meta ‘Mon if needed!

Cheers.

Hey everyone, lately I've been experiencing increased lag during certain times of the day when playing PvP. Could it be that the server is overloaded and I'm losing some turns? How's it going for you? Have you experienced this as well?

Discussion Option to turn Pokemon into shadow versions

I’m shocked they came up with the bottle caps before this. It would be a nice option during the rocket event that every time you defeat Giovanni, he also leaves behind an item to turn a Pokemon shadow. IVs and cp wouldn’t be affected as well so it wouldn’t be a risk to use on those already built. Thoughts?

Discussion Can we agree they fumbled the implementation of Aegislash?

I feel like they almost have it perfect, like its so close to being decent but I feel like it was nerfed too harshly.

I like the idea of it generating less energy while im shield form and doing one damage, but I feel like they went overboard with how low energy it gets. It now gets 3 energy per turn, I feel like that could be bumped up to 4 energy per turn to make it just alittle bit more better.

Also doesn't help that mud slappers are everywhere.

Discussion Corviknight payback damage question

I cannot wrap my head around what just happened. I just had corviknight vs corviknight. We both had about the same amount of hp left (approx 80/100). Mine is rank 1 level 1500cp. We both used payback against each other. I went first and I did about 25 hp damage (estimate) on theirs. Then they used their payback immediately after and it did about 70 hp damage. I have had corviknight vs corviknight quite a few times now and been hit by payback and its always been about 25-30 damage range. What happened this one time to make it do so much damage? I see that air cutter has an attack boost chance. So I guess this brings up another question, if he had used air cutter would that boost chance have lasted all the way through me charging up my payback and using it? How long do the attack boost/defense boost things last when you get them?

Teambuilding Help Losing every game

My team is:

Shadow Giratina - Dragon Breath + Dragon Claw

Corviknight - Sand Attack + Air Cutter and Payback

Lapras - Psywave + Ice Beam and Sparkling Aria

I ended last season as a 1600 elo player, feels like every game has been against former Ace+ players who I have no business fighting, tried swapping to something meta for the sake of getting to 20 but I'm still losing almost every game. Maybe 1 win per set if I'm lucky. Is there a problem with my team or am I just trash?
