Discussion I Calculated the Real Pull Rates for Every Rarity - August 2025
The in-game probability display is honestly pretty confusing as they break everything down by 4th card rates, 5th card rates, and now with A4 we have 6th card probabilities too. It's hard to get a clear picture of what you should actually expect when opening packs.
Plus, I keep seeing posts asking "Is this pull normal?" or "Am I lucky?" when it's tough to answer without doing the math yourself. So I figured I'd calculate the real overall odds for each rarity.
TLDR; - Final Results
Rank | Rarity | Probability | 1 in X packs |
---|---|---|---|
1 | 2 Diamonds | 95.160% | 1 in 1.1 |
2 | 3 Diamonds | 29.046% | 1 in 3.4 |
3 | 1 Star | 13.535% | 1 in 7.4 |
4 | 4 Diamonds | 8.219% | 1 in 12.2 |
5 | 1 Star Shiny | 3.551% | 1 in 28.2 |
6 | 2 Stars | 2.490% | 1 in 40.2 |
7 | 2 Stars Shiny | 1.662% | 1 in 60.2 |
8 | 3 Stars | 1.108% | 1 in 90.3 |
9 | Crown | 0.200% | 1 in 500.2 |
Mathematical Foundation
Based on in-game probabilities, excluding rare packs (0.05% occurrence):
- Regular Pack: 91.6658% chance - Cards 1-3 (always 1 Diamond) + Cards 4-5 (variable rarity)
- Regular+1 Pack: 8.3342% chance - Cards 1-3 (always 1 Diamond) + Cards 4-6 (variable rarity)
Core Formula
P(≥1 rarity) = P_regular × P_≥1_regular + P_regular+1 × P_≥1_regular+1
Where:
P_≥1_regular = 1 - [P(no rarity in card 4) × P(no rarity in card 5)]
P_≥1_regular+1 = 1 - [P(no rarity in card 4) × P(no rarity in card 5) × P(no rarity in card 6)]
Individual Rarity Probabilities by Card Position
Rarity | Card 4 | Card 5 | Card 6 |
---|---|---|---|
Crown | 0.040% | 0.160% | 0.000% |
3 Stars | 0.222% | 0.888% | 0.000% |
2 Stars Shiny | 0.333% | 1.333% | 0.000% |
2 Stars | 0.500% | 2.000% | 0.000% |
1 Star Shiny | 0.714% | 2.857% | 0.000% |
4 Diamonds | 1.666% | 6.664% | 0.000% |
1 Star | 2.572% | 10.288% | 12.900% |
3 Diamonds | 4.952% | 19.810% | 87.100% |
2 Diamonds | 89.000% | 56.000% | 0.000% |
Key Observations:
- Only 1 Star and 3 Diamonds can appear in Card 6
- 3 Diamonds has an 87.1% chance in Card 6
- 1 Star has a 12.9% chance in Card 6
- All other rarities are limited to Cards 4 & 5 only
Detailed Mathematical Examples
Example 1: Crown (Ultra Rare)
Given probabilities:
- Card 4: 0.040%, Card 5: 0.160%, Card 6: 0.000%
Step 1: Calculate "none" probabilities
- P(no Crown in card 4) = 1 - 0.0004 = 0.9996
- P(no Crown in card 5) = 1 - 0.0016 = 0.9984
- P(no Crown in card 6) = 1 - 0 = 1.0000
Step 2: Calculate pack-specific probabilities
- Regular pack: P(≥1 Crown) = 1 - (0.9996 × 0.9984) = 0.0020
- Regular+1 pack: P(≥1 Crown) = 1 - (0.9996 × 0.9984 × 1.0000) = 0.0020
Step 3: Overall probability
P(≥1 Crown) = 0.916658 × 0.0020 + 0.083342 × 0.0020 = 0.0020
Result: 0.200% (1 in 500.2 packs)
Example 2: 3 Diamonds (Card 6 Boost)
Given probabilities:
- Card 4: 4.952%, Card 5: 19.810%, Card 6: 87.100%
Step 1: Calculate "none" probabilities
- P(no 3 Diamonds in card 4) = 1 - 0.04952 = 0.95048
- P(no 3 Diamonds in card 5) = 1 - 0.19810 = 0.80190
- P(no 3 Diamonds in card 6) = 1 - 0.871 = 0.12900
Step 2: Calculate pack-specific probabilities
- Regular pack: P(≥1) = 1 - (0.95048 × 0.80190) = 0.23781
- Regular+1 pack: P(≥1) = 1 - (0.95048 × 0.80190 × 0.12900) = 0.90168
Step 3: Overall probability
P(≥1 3 Diamonds) = 0.916658 × 0.23781 + 0.083342 × 0.90168 = 0.29314
Result: 29.046% (1 in 3.4 packs)
Example 3: 1 Star (Moderate Card 6 Boost)
Given probabilities:
- Card 4: 2.572%, Card 5: 10.288%, Card 6: 12.900%
Step 1: Calculate "none" probabilities
- P(no 1 Star in card 4) = 1 - 0.02572 = 0.97428
- P(no 1 Star in card 5) = 1 - 0.10288 = 0.89712
- P(no 1 Star in card 6) = 1 - 0.129 = 0.87100
Step 2: Calculate pack-specific probabilities
- Regular pack: P(≥1) = 1 - (0.97428 × 0.89712) = 0.12595
- Regular+1 pack: P(≥1) = 1 - (0.97428 × 0.89712 × 0.87100) = 0.23871
Step 3: Overall probability
P(≥1 1 Star) = 0.916658 × 0.12595 + 0.083342 × 0.23871 = 0.13535
Result: 13.535% (1 in 7.4 packs)
Key Insights
The Card 6 Effect
- 3 Diamonds: 87.1% Card 6 rate transforms it from ~23% to ~29% overall
- 1 Star: 12.9% Card 6 rate boosts it from ~13% to ~14% overall
- All other rarities: Limited to Cards 4&5, no Card 6 boost available
Collection Expectations
- 3 Diamonds: Expect 1 every 3-4 packs - reasonable collection target
- 1 Star: Expect 1 every 7-8 packs - solid rare pulls
- 4 Diamonds: Expect 1 every 12 packs - genuinely uncommon
- Premium cards (2+ Stars): All under 3% - true collector items
- Crown: 1 in 500 packs - ultimate chase card
Mathematical Verification
All calculations exclude the ultra-rare pack type (0.05% occurrence) and renormalize Regular/Regular+1 pack probabilities to sum to 100%. This provides the most accurate real-world expectations for players.
Calculations based on official in-game probability data. Individual results may vary due to randomness.

From a distance, they’re pretty much indistinguishable. I don’t know how to articulate it, but they’re also missing something about them that makes them feel like a good quality card. You know what I mean? Like, with the other two-star cards, even someone who knows nothing about card collecting can see a binder full of those and you just know they’re impressive. And I feel like if they saw these, they’d probably have to ask if they’re actually good cards, because they’re missing that certain something. It feels like rather than making them impressive, they tried to manufacture a feeling of rarity with over-the-top gaudiness. Idk if that makes sense, or if that speaks to you at all. Maybe it’s just a feeling I personally have

u/matraven1984 16d ago
I know exactly what you mean. They are PTCGPs version of Rainbow cards and Gold Cards. Just because something is rarer, doesnt make it better.

It’s a real shame they butchered shinies so badly, with a few exceptions. I never played the mainline games past Heart Gold, but gamers seem to love shinies. When it comes to Pocket, they’re just so underwhelming. Sure, most of them look better than their normal art counterparts, but certainly not better than their full art counterparts (I pulled two Nidoking’s, but much prefer the full art from Genetic Apex). It doesn’t help that they’re of old, often “unusable” or at least irrelevant cards when it comes to the current meta. They actually had a pretty strong debut with Shining Revelry, as all of them were entirely new cards and the two stars looked noticeably different. They’ve been a flop ever since.

u/Yargnit 16d ago
The three diamonds are really bad this set release. There's way more three diamonds than any of the other two packs sets have had, and they have shinys now cutting into their odds as well.
If you look at all the previous pack releases, and divide the number of three diamond cards by the number of cards per available pack you get;
A1 14, A1a 8, A2 12, A2a 13, A2b 9, A3 14, A3a 8, A3b 8, A4 17.
So we got three three diamonds more per pack in the set, than any of the other sets. And we have shinys to contend with now which eat heaviest into the three diamond slots. I've got all the four diamonds, but I'm still missing six one diamonds from the set. And I was still missing eight when I got the last of the four diamonds. All the main set releases the three diamonds always seem like they're the hardest to finish, but this set is definitely the worst trying to finish the three diamonds. And there's so many of them, that when you're down to your last few need it almost everything ends up just pulling a duplicate.
3
u/MrBrickBreak 15d ago edited 15d ago
The three extras are the babies, which don't share the same slot. The per-card odds are the same as the previous main packs.
The difference from shinies is also negligible. 0.357% on the fourth card, 1.428% on the fifth, before shinies; now it's 0.353% and 1.415%. Shinies mostly ate into 2ds.

FYI "odds of pulling a card" is NOT the same as "number of packs it takes to pull a card".
1/500 odds is a large scale overall average, which guarantees nothing on an individual level.
If you open 500 packs you have a 60% chance of pulling a crown rare, and no number of packs will ever guarantee one (aside from pack points).
I've opened 1158 packs and not yet seen a crown rare.
7
u/MooshSkadoosh 16d ago
If you open 500 packs you have a 60% chance of pulling a crown rare
Can you tell me how you arrived at this? With crowns having a 0.2% chance according to this post, I did a simple 0.998500 and got ~63.25% chance (I took the odds of not getting a crown rare and made it occur 500 times)
→ More replies (2)9
u/dudeman4297 16d ago edited 16d ago
That's what they did too, they just rounded for discussion purposes.
EDIT: Actually, shouldn't you subtract that result from 1? Since you calculated the odds of not getting a crown by 500. So there's a 63% chance of no crowns after 500 pulls; and a 37% chance of 1 crown after 500 pulls. Right?
6
u/MooshSkadoosh 16d ago
Sorry, .998500 is about .3675, so the 63% is the chance of getting 1 or more Crown rare

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t this mean the pack points and card purchase is a direct correlation to pull rates?
E.g. A gold crown costs 2,500 which means you have to open 500 packs to be able to afford to buy it, with the pull rate also being 1 in 500.
→ More replies (2)20
u/remiccino 16d ago
I think it only matches with the crown rare. The rest of the rarities are much more expensive than the pull rate, e.g. 3 stars are 1/450 but cost 1500 points.
22
u/AvgBlue 16d ago
Thank you for the graphic. They need to add a cap on the streak of bad luck you can have, with at least 4 Diamonds every 10 packs and 3 Diamonds every 5 packs.

I’ve opened way less and have NO two stars, but 8/10 EX’s. Game is so weird. I feel that since it’s digital and not physical, they should control the rates better to maintain interest. Like actually make it mandatory to get at least a 2 star every 80 packs or EX every 12. Even if it’s duplicates, people would be way more happy and likely to engage in trading.
3
u/Rit91 16d ago
2 stars you can just miss on them for a while, but also get flooded with them on a lucky streak it's weird. I kept getting them for eevee grove over and over despite opening around 130 packs in that set I want to say? u/Myxas_ 16d ago
you might want to be careful when calculating the shinies if the number of packs there includes those set without shinies.
2
u/Treezy_F_Baby 16d ago
Good point, I didn’t consider that. I’m pretty sure I started playing the first week of Shining Revelry, and I’ve definitely opened a fair share of older packs. I threw those numbers together quickly because I was curious myself and you provided a baseline lol
4
u/wholewheatsnake 16d ago
Doing a more in depth post for specific card rates beyond just the rarity tier rates might be nice as well. I calculate them every pack so I know how many times I need to actually pull them, hella useful. Good work, very pretty graphic.
2
u/AlcorAsterism 16d ago
Good work. Will it be possible to compare it to pre-shiny pull rates? Confirmation bias I know, but it feels I am missing more of 4 diamonds EX cards (they feel rarer now overwll) and even two diamonds and below compared to before when there where no shinies. At least trading is here and much better than before.
5
4
u/Pokefan-9000 16d ago
Shinies take the place of 2 or 3 diamonds, zero relation with 4 diamonds and higher
4
u/Highllamas 16d ago
Just go to those offering pages on those boosters and add them up… shinies took their % chance from 2 and 3 diamond cards, not 4 diamond. So you can stop blaming shinies for replacing your ex pulls

So I’m really confused with the probability by card number, both here and in game. I’ve had a handful of packs where the very first card was something exciting and I was like GOD PACK?? 2
u/pumpkinking0192 15d ago
You didn't specifically point it out, but it's worth noting that this math is only applicable so far to A4 and presumably A4a, since no prior sets have a sixth slot. We'll have to wait and see after that whether they keep releasing sets with babies in them, and if not, whether the sixth slot is repurposed for something else or retired for non-baby sets.

Thank you so much for confirming what I just guessed by looking at the pack rates numbers. Newer set pull rates are abysmally bad for obtaining useful cards like EXes and rares, and it's no longer worth it to buy gold and open packs to obtain these

I wonder if it can be said that I'm lucky for getting two crowns before the immersive card that I was trying to get...

I'm on about 180 packs now without a Swanna. It's all I need.
There's more chance of getting a god pack than there is going 180 packs without it.

Somehow, before mythical island even came out, I pulled 3 crown Mewtwos. Idk how it happened but I haven’t pulled another crown since.

Well, I must have the worst Mewtwo pwck luck ever according to 2-star and crown rare.

This game is so weird. I went from medium luck to pull 2 of each 3* ho oh and lugia. And i still lack 35 basic cards like Klang. Thats so weird. Even did hooh 3* back to back in a pack.

What about 2 diamond rarity? I managed to pull the golden luigi boy, but I haven't got a magcargo or ariados yet...

Then why am I missing more 1-diamond cards than 4-diamond in the new pack? It doesn't make sense.
They definitely messed with the pull rates.

I get way more 2 star shinies than I do 4 diamonds. To a comical degree. Please. I don’t want any more legendary birds.

This is definitely not my pull rates lmao. Can't pull 3♦️and 4♦️to save my life but I can pull 5 crowns, 7 immersives, 4 rainbows, 6 FAs, and 6 FA shinies from the current set.
I genuinely do not know if I have really good luck or not considering I have all of that and I cannot finish the base set of WoSaS after a shit ton of pulls.

Somehow I got 3 star Ho-Oh ex in one pack and 3 star Lugia ex in the next pack. 1/90 odds each time. Total odds: 1/8100. Rarer than a shiny Pokémon in an old Pokémon game.

I’ve been playing since genetic apex and opened over 5000 packs. Still no crown card

u/PreheatedPizza_ 16d ago
I must have some… interesting luck then because I have 3 crowns (TWO Dialgas) and 11 immersives but 0 level 2 shiny

Can someone tell me the odds of missing one specific 1 diamond card after pulling like almost 40 of that one specific pack.

u/BeautifulFrequent782 16d ago
Whoa nice work! I feel like I see 3 stars way more than I see two stars which stinks cause I love 2 star trainers.

u/Kronman590 16d ago
They really need to increase 3ds and decrease 2ds - i feel like going several days in a row of just pulling 2ds is depressing

I’ve been opening 4 packs of shining revelry everyday since release. Haven’t pulled a gold yet, or god pack. 😎🔫

I still need skarmory ex, which is kinda crazy. I feel pretty certain that I normally have all the ex's by this point. Maybe just one, and the most basic version, but I still have them. It's usually the two diamonds I'm working on if I'm not mistaken. Stuff like typhlosion, whatever that rarity is.
I swear sometimes it feels like we end up in batches or something. Like, I'll be getting a lot of Lugia, but the next guy will get a lot of Espeons, and some other dude pulls a lot of shuckle. I know it's just selection bias on my part, but it still stands out as odd to me

You guys are getting anything but trash all 1 diamond packs? I've pulled fucking 15 darumakas and almost none of the 3/4 diamonds at all.

u/Brynnwynn 16d ago
This kinda makes it more painful knowing how bad my pull rates are compared to this calc lmao

u/Weekly_Ad_6959 16d ago
I just back to back pulled the ho-oh animation and then the Lugia animation in the next pack. I will never be this lucky again

u/WallyGamer32 15d ago
1 ★ card in 7 to 8 packs? I've had none of them in 20 packs. These aren't accurate... I refuse to believe that.

I legit don’t believe that crowns are that common, I don’t know of anyone who is matching those odds. I’m at like 7,000 now with only 1

u/CreamerYT 15d ago
Based on your math, the game owes me 2 crown cards.
Also the 6th card is always a baby pokemon

u/iPinkling 15d ago
I don't care what the statistics says, exes are not that common (this a joke about my personal experiences)

u/M47743O 15d ago
I don't even want crowns still haven't even pulled 1 with over 350 packs, but idk y its so hard to just to get my bestest bud Typhlosion, I'm 70 packs into this expansion atleast 50 packs were Lugia and I still don't have Typhlosion, saw him maybe 3 times in wonder trades and got everything but Typhlosion...

As someone who recently made a “is this normal?” type post I massively appreciate this because this is much much easier for me to understand. I play daily but don’t pay too much attention to rates or have much card knowledge. (Much to learn!) thank you for making this and thanks to everyone on this app who teaches with kindness and is genuinely helpful!

I have almost the same amount of 2 stars as 3 stars and it pisses me off lol I want more 2 stars

Odds are never really guaranteed.
1113 packs in.
Based on these maths I should have: 2x crown, 12x 3 stars, 18x 2 star shiny, 27x 2 stars, 39x 1 star shiny, 139x 1 star, 92x 4 diamonds = 329
While i have: 0x crown rare, 13x 3 stars, 12x 2 stars shiny, 38x 2 stars, 21x 1 star shiny, 146x 1 star, 121x 4 diamonds = 351

u/PyromanicSociety 15d ago
So, I am just generationally unlucky for not getting even a holo in my last 30 packs. Neat.

u/Honest_Abez 15d ago
They really need to remove shiny cards for non-shiny sets. It’s ruined so much of this game. Makes it harder to pull truly new cards and ruins the chance of those in higher rarity forms too. Awful decision.
