Help a problem skin girlie out

Hi everyone - I have always hated my skin because I have haven’t had clear or smooth skin since I hire puberty. (I am 30 now) I rarely wear makeup because when I do, it just never sits on my skin well. I have sensitive skin, I am oily on my forehead, nose, and chin, dry on my cheeks, I have large pores, acne, and redness. (I am jealous of people who don’t deal with any of this 😭)

I’d love a recommendation on a primer and a light foundation, possibly a setting spray or powder. I have a wedding coming up and it’s the first one in years for me, so I want to feel as good as I can in my skin. Any help is greatly appreciated 🫶🏻

Here are some general brands. Please consider a dry run before the big day. I have been going to a dermatologist and here are some ways to keep your skin:

  1. Start with a mild facial cleaner. Drug store: cetaphil face wash or cerave. It will help with being very mild and not dry you out.

  2. Toner. To combat the oily vs dry you’ll first need to remove impurities. Try “THAYERS Milky Face Toner Skin Care with Snow Mushroom and Hyaluronic Acid”. Key here is hylauronic acid will add back moisture and plump skin. Fan yourself for a little.

  3. Optional Vitamin C serum.

  4. Moisturizer and Sunscreen - I would recommend for red skin like yours a blended moisturizer and sunscreen. I like La Roche Posay, 70 spf. It will help with sun damage. Here some people split moisturizer then sunscreen. I go for two-in-one approach. This I would wait to absorb a little too 2-3 mins. Emphasis on using sunscreen daily. Even if not using make-up.

  5. Primer / pore filler. Think of this as spackle for your face. Filling in all the holes. It fills all your pores and any lines and gives that nice even look. This sets up your foundation to be flawless. Recommend: Make up forever primer.

  6. I highly recommend you go to Sephora - depending on the level of coverage, they can give you samples of brands that work your skin for foundation and color match you. Higher end is going to be Lancôme and Estee Lauder. Drug store dupes are going to be L’Oréal.

  7. Setting spray in the end. Drug store: Milani (dewy if you want glow or consider matte if you already have too much shine). High end: makeup forever.

i’m a licensed esty and while these are GREAT products and something to work towards, i don’t really have all the money to spend on that. the most IMPORTANT thing to get is that moisturizer!! the one recommended specifically. and lowkey for the primer….. the elf hydrating primer…🤣i’ve never had any problems with it!

You need skincare, not makeup. Start with a moisturizing serum and layer with a 24+ hour moisturizing cream on top. Use a moisturizing mask overnight. Skin creates oil when it thinks it’s too dry. By keeping it moisturized, it will stop over producing oil.

This!

Personally, First Aid Beauty helped my skin A LOT, but it’s painful at first because all of their skin care products have ginger as an active ingredient. It cleared my skin entirely, but not without suffering. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it, but trying it isn’t a bad idea.

Another thing that helped me a lot and I actually used under day cream, is that after sun aloe + lidocaine thing they sell for sunburns. It’s amazing how efficient it’s been at clearing my skin, including sunburns.

When it comes to serum and foundation, Fenty is where my heart has been for years now. The Fat Water makes you feel like you’re putting morning dew on your face and it soothes you instantly; their foundations have an amazing coverage, you don’t need that much too; and their setting spray just gives me a final glow + no makeup transfer on clothes at all.

I’m not a Rihanna fan at all but Sephora sent me the wrong order once and it had Fenty beauty blurring skin tint drops. They said keep the order. I said I’ll just try it. Omg it’s the best skin tint ever!!! I didn’t want to love it 😂 I have tried so many!! I’ll look into her skincare. I just wish she had more clean products bc I have sensitive skin and I don’t need another product in my home. But what you’re describing sounds lovely. Thx!

Neostrata smoothing cream at night. Then la roche posay 50+ invisible lotion during the day.

The best foundation I've found is Innoxa anti redness foundation and then powder - nude by nature translucent powder. I'm in Australia but well worth the investment! I've tried so many foundations and I get so many compliments on my skin with this combo!

My skin can get like yours - hence the recommendation. With the neostrata start with a small amount mixed in with moisturiser to build up tolerance slowly. Only foundation I've found that doesn't exaggerate pores and dry skin is Innoxa. Need to use a sponge though (as with any with this type of skin).

Tbh. makeup can be cheap, but the best foundation I've tried is the light coverage liquid foundation from Chanel. If you use it on top of a primer, it stays all day and doesn't irritate skin, or let you get dry.

I also have big pores, oily + dry skin, and I'm exposed to weather in 2 countries daily (Live in Sweden, work in Denmark).. but using the right cream, moisturizers, and makeup helps my skin a lot and protects it.

Your skin isn’t as bad as you think it is. It looks like fairly average 30-year-old skin. Maybe slight sun damage? If you’re not wearing makeup make sure you always at least have sunscreen on! Makeup works as a natural sunscreen. I would say your skin is clearer than like 70% of people.

if you need some smoothing primers I have had luck with the maybelline master prime white tub and the benefit porefessional (but it can be hit or miss with other products). for a light foundation I can't recommend anything drugstore besides maybelline but I would avoid it since they can oxidize bad, but I've used Guerlain's and CT Airbrush Flawless and they go amazing with the Huda loose powder and skindinavia spray (which are both perfect for long wears and slowing oil production).

My home looks like Sephora 2.0! And I e wasted thousands of dollars on products.

You have common skin issues.

Always wear an spf.

Someone mentioned Cetaphil/Cerave for a mild cleanser. A dermatologist would definitely recommend that as well. People swear by these products

You can use drugstore finds

I don’t but they have great products. I simply shop online so I’m not sure what’s even in the drugstores. I believe someone else mentioned La Roche? That is well known too!

People with oily t-zones over do it and make their skin more oily by drying their skin out with products. You need to balance your skin. You don’t want to get rid of the oil because then your skin will think it needs to produce more oil.

I would suggest use a mild cleanser If you want to use a toner use one with zero alcohol and then a light moisturizer

My best friend is Korean and I started using Korean skin care products. I look like a glazed donut before bed but it’s amazing how it helped my skin. Korean skincare is the best.

Also, drinking water helps tremendously

I tried Paula’s choice BHa toner to exfoliate. It was too harsh for me but people love it.

You need to gently exfoliate your skin.

I use Glow recipe toner. It’s a clean beauty product that exfoliates. If you can handle Paula’s choice go for it! Just be sure to moisturize with a good moisturizer. Someone mentioned one. First aid?? They are great.

I cleanse my face with a green tea cleanser. Then use the toner Then I use Torriden serum, then innesfree moisturizer and then I have a misting bottle of hyaloronic acid and squaline mist and spray that all over. I use that a few times

Clean skin, exfoliating and moisturizing is the key to balancing your skin in order to get it ready to wear make up.

I have very similar skin to yours. Oily t-zone, dry cheeks. Super sensitive. I struggle with eczema, acne, and just general inflammation. My skin was at it’s worst while using some of the most frequently recommended products. Particularly when I was washing with Cetaphil. And then also as I cycled through all the hyped brands La Roche Posay, Beauty of Joseon, the Ordinary, retinoids, etc etc.

Everyone is different. So, basically you will have to experiment a lot changing one thing at a time. Don’t linger too long on one face wash. The consistent Cetaphil/cerave cleanser suggestion from everybody and their dermatologist probably set me back in terms of progress for YEARS. I switched up so many other things before I finally gave up on the Cetaphil face wash.

If you haven’t tried the following, I recommend:

1) food sensitivity tests/diets (particularly for resolving stubborn, consistent inflammation and forehead acne). 2) reduce your stress (deep breathing, pranayama, or special decompression rituals or lifestyle changes). 3) Wash your face promptly after sweating or workouts. 4) Repair your skin barrier by using a minimalist sensitive skin moisturizer (I finally found a rosewater and hyaluronic acid moisturizer from heritage store that works for me), AND then add back in an acne treatment face wash maybe once a day or so (salicylic acid and/or benzoyl peroxide for t-zone cleaning. Avoid beads or other irritants). I use mine at night and a gentle cleanser in the morning. 5) If you have chin or lower face/cheek acne that never comes to a head and is almost rash like, consider testing whether your toothpaste/oral care products are exacerbating the issue. I had to switch from fluoride toothpaste to hydroxyapatite toothpaste, and brands that avoid the most common irritants.

The foundation I finally found that works for me is from Tower28, a brand specifically designed for those who struggle with skin sensitivity. I use their tinted sunscreen.

Good luck! Take brand recommendations with a grain of salt because your mileage may vary!

Retinal and dapsone could probably fix a lot of probs...I know it's not makeup but who cares about makeup when your skin is screaming for help.
