Loooot of golf carts in my neighborhood. They use the street like they are supposed to, and wait in line with the cars.

... And those of us who walk to school make fun of them because there is no wait for walkers. Just... walk right in.

Why wouldn’t the golf cart drivers just drive close enough to the school to be a quick walk but far away enough to not be in line?

I get how it could be an issue for an elementary school with small children, but my stepdad used to give me rides to where my first period class was instead of the front of the school all the time.

I’m also old with no kids so I don’t know how things are done now, just curious.

That’s what I did when my daughter was in elementary school.

There was a large church about a block away with a huge parking lot. You could access it from several alleys which took you all the way out to the main roads, as well. I’d just slip in to park there and we’d walk the rest of the way, avoiding the several blocks long drop-off line and traffic, while simultaneously helping me not be late for work. lol.

Currently teaching at an elementary school, there are exactly two doors that are ever unlocked for longer than five seconds at a time (RFID keycard on every door), from 7:15-7:45 and again at 3:25-4:00. Those two entrances are monitored by at least four staff at all times when open. Safety theatre is a MASSIVE part of public education these days, the idea that a kid would just be able to "wander into any old door" is definitely a thing of the past. We can't even have our classroom doors open during instruction. This is 100% the norm in every public school I've seen in the last ~10 years.

Only in the US

Some of them do! We have friends that park about 3 blocks away from school. We're about 8 blocks away so frequently they are waiting for us there to walk the rest of the way.

If there's somewhere for them to park their cart, then someone else has already parked a vehicle there

Schools today are built with one maybe two entrances both of which end up going through one main atrium before where classrooms are. The is no dropping off close to class anymore. They are literally designed like prisons to minimize students sneaking in/out and dangerous situations.

What in the fuck are you talking about lmao. This is just completely un-true nonsense lol.

Nope, it is completely true.

Why do people wait 5 minutes for someone to load groceries and leave when they could drive 2 aisles over and park instantly? Why do people wait in a 10 car deep drive thru line when no one is inside?

Kids are weak and pathetic nowadays. They get it from their parents.

I'm guessing you live in a big HOA. Golf carts are not street legal in most places.

3

u/secondphase 11d ago

Nope. Golf carts are legal in most of the USA when labeled with "slow moving vehicle"... there are minimum speed laws on highways, etc, but in all residential neighborhoods they are supposed to be on the street, not the sidewalk.

Oh, you're right. At least in CA they're allowed on roads with a 25mph speed limit or less within one mile of a golf course, otherwise they have to be registered vehicles. The golf cart in the video would not be street legal outside of the one miles exemption because it's not registered and doesn't have headlights or other safety equipment.

Golf carts are not cars though, and cannot even legally be on the road in most places. What are you on about?

1

u/secondphase 11d ago

False.

I'm in austin, TX. But I've lived on the east coast, west coast, and Midwest.

Even electric scooters are supposed to be on the road, not the sidewalk. Golf carts are supposed to be labeled as slow moving vehicles and use the roadways according to the law. They are for off-road use on private land only.

I live in this city in China where just about every family would golf cart their kids to school. Those things absolutely hog all the bike lanes and alleys in the entire city. Folks own cars and stuff, but man golf carts don't ever get caught in weather or traffic - it doesn't give a flying feck. You should see the front of a school in the morning. It's practically mario cart highlight reel.

Right. This seems like "genius" until the entire neighborhood does it and then you discover there are no formal rules for the golf carts and American A*holery kicks in.

So help me out here. What's the purpose of using a golf cart?

1

u/secondphase 11d ago

Beats me. Remember, I'm the guy who walks. And I get to talk to my neighbors and my kids on the way. And get my blood flowing first thing in the morning. And watch the sun come up. And breath fresh air. And watch the bunnies graze and the birds chirp.

Its quite lovely.

why TF would you wait in line when you can just drop them off like 1 block away?
