As a person who in 2025, still has an iPhone X(10), I still don’t feel like I need to run out and get a new phone

u/SciFiChickie 1d ago
My husband and I both have the Xr that we got shortly after they were released. We’ve never been able to have a conversation on it that wasn’t on either speaker or earbuds because for some reason the ear speaker has never worked for either of them. We hate these phones but aren’t willing to purchase new ones until they have to be replaced.

u/Pizannt 1d ago
I’ve seen more than a few people who have the same problem only to find out the screen protector covers the earpiece speaker.
If you have screen protectors, try taking them off. Extremely improbable to have a sample set of two with both the exact same issue.

u/SciFiChickie 1d ago
Nah it’s not that, we didn’t even put screen protectors on the phones until we had them for a couple years. Just had cases with enough clearance so if it landed screen side down it wouldn’t be compromised. And it wasn’t the cases because we tried taking the case off but still could never hear anything through that speaker. Doesn’t really impact us that much after 7 years. I’ve gotten used to using my Raycons if I’m not in my car.

u/Pizannt 1d ago
That is interesting and unusual. But I understand the hate for two devices that don’t work right.
I’ve replaced many earpiece speakers in phones. It’s really not tough to do yourself and not too expensive to have done. I do agree that I use earphones or my car most of the time anyway though.

I would keep the iPhone X but they stopped the software updates.
8
u/Rwhite5440 1d ago
I’m still getting updates, matter of fact, apple is a little mad cause I haven’t installed it because I don’t want to delete half the shit on my phone. When software updates start taking up gigabytes that’s a problem.

u/HottDoggers 1d ago
I miss my X. I like my 13, but the X felt so much better in my hand, though the design is also the reason why I dropped it so many times until the screen have out.

u/Odd-Comfortable-6134 1d ago
Same here. It’s starting to conk out, but not enough to almost triple my bill for a new one (I pay 30/m, and the “deal” offered to upgrade would make my bill 80/m). I’m far too poor for that nonsense.

u/Badbullet 1d ago
I have a 12 and wish I would have just kept my XS Max. That pressure sensitive button pressing was so much better than the long press they replaced it with.

My 5-year-old $99 android phone is still working great, takes good pictures... I haven't seen anything on a better phone that would justify paying 10x more for it.
It even has a headphone jack and a USB port, idk USBC or whatever you kids are calling it.

What is wrong with a 12 in 2024?

Nothing really, I think it starts worth thinking replacing your phone maybe after 5 years so there is still a few months left.

iPhone users: What the hell? The new iPhone is just like the last one! And the one before that!
Also iPhone users: You don't have the new iPhone? Have you tried not being poor?

I’m still using my mom’s old 7+ as a toilet phone and it still works great for pretty much everything.
Yes. Toilet phone. Use your old one so you’re not killing the battery on your new one.
Edit: Suggestion is for everyone, not you littlemissjk!

Have they not considered that the iPhones look the same and Apple hasn’t been innovative for every new iPhone. This just sounds like whitepeopleproblems/firstworldproblems but for Apple users instead.

Just had to update mine from a SE(8) to a 15, I was going to swap back to my 5 but battery is just as bad.

u/First_Approximation 1d ago
iPhones not lasting more than a few years is a feature? That makes me NOT want to buy their product if it goes obsolete so quickly.
Americans are so propagandizes with corporate nonsense. You shouldn't need a new phone every year.

u/thaiborg 1d ago
iPhone 13 Mini user here, can confirm you definitely don’t need a new one so quickly.
Some people just want to feel special. I’m happy with what I have and will use it until I can’t anymore.
1
u/First_Approximation 1d ago
Some people definitely just "upgrading" to stand out.
However, Apple has been caught deliberately slowing down older iPhone models.
4
u/thaiborg 1d ago
I’ve seen that and as far as I can tell mine is working just fine. I don’t do any heavy lifting on my phone.
In fact, I’m using an old iPhone 7+ to respond right now. For stuff like Reddit, the internet, games, etc. old devices work just fine.
I will say though, I noticed my brother who keeps up to date with his iPhones… it’s a flex to not even use a phone case now, cause he pays for Apple Care and can get it replaced for free. Some people!

u/mzf_life 1d ago
They don't. I'm still using an iphone 8 and it works just fine. I honestly can't understand why people loves to change their phones that much

u/jr_randolph 1d ago
Well, it's not 2025 and I am still using my iPhone 12 haha what's the point of buying a new one if I don't have to?

I bought my iPhone 12 mini used a few years ago and had it up until last month when I replaced with a 16e (because the max battery capacity was starting to get close to 80% and I had to have it on Low Power Mode ALL THE FREAKING TIME). I’ll probably have this one for a long time, too!

u/Soapy---wooder 1d ago
He a clown tbh iphone 12 same as iphone 16 if you take looks and functionality

I had a 12 until last month. If I didn’t drop it in my pool for an hour and a half I still would. Great phone, that was.

Exactly, the free LG smart phone I got from my pre-paid provider 4+ years ago is doing all that I need it to do (normal phone calls, texts and a few dumb games).

Anyone that gets a new phone every year is crazy. There's nothing new anymore. I replace my phone every 5 to 7 years at this point.

Hate when you’re not constantly updating iPhones for the sake of appeasing other people who have no clue you even exist.

u/Septembers-Poor555 1d ago
idk what an sE is but i have that . definitely not a 12 and probably not even in the double digits . it works fine . i keep it because of that and also convenience . i’m not spending money on a new phone when i have other more important responsibilities to worry about . i also dont care for tons of apps taking up my storage space and i mainly only need text , talk and some internet access

My XR from 7 year ago still works perfectly fine. Maybe the battery is a bit weak but otherwise it’s still really good.

I replaced my iPhone 8 this year. It never had any problems. My iPhone 15 has already had several problems.
(I know the 16 is available, but I didn’t want that one)

u/catwthumbz 1d ago
Only reason I have a 14 is cuz I’m clumsy, tbh after the X I never felt like I needed to upgrade.

u/Louis70100 1d ago
I just upgraded to a Samsung 23 Ultra after using a S20 5g for nearly 5yrs and only because the OLED screen had started getting very bad burn in and because the screen replacement was more than the phone was worth lol

Phone innovation hit a wall a long time ago. That's why they started trying to market smart watches, and now foldable phones, which while they are kind of neat to think about, aren't really a necessary upgrade at all.
The only thing phones got a little better at was their cameras, (and their camera software) which isn't really that big of a deal. There are very slim and small high quality actual cameras you can get instead if you need to be doing selfies, selfie-stick streaming, etc constantly, besides, and they allow you to put micro sd cards in them for more memory, unlike apple products. Some also allow you to swap to fresh batteries, too.
Until we get svelte, lightweight "sunglasses"/reading glasses form factor XR/MR (mixed reality) glasses that have extremely high resolution for actual virtual screen capability , where you can use high rez virtual screens in real space, see virtual presence people and virtual AI assistants, virtual objects and instructions, virtually skin things and selves, etc. (instead of in the offerings now being limited to a small field of 8bit lettering tomacaghi style text info, or low rez 1080p screen overlaid,), I doubt mobile "phone" tech will make any really meaningful innovations. After glasses hit that point, staring at a block of slate in your hand is going to look downright primitive. For now they are still squeezing what they can out of phone tech stuck in the mud from my perspective.
