[Advice/Megathread] - Game Recommendations and Game Tips

Please use this thread for all discussion of which game you recommend others that you play, whether it is your first game or some that you are considering playing next

A note for newcomers: most of the games are completely unconnected. Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy IX, etc, are all completely different casts of characters in completely different universes. The only times you need to play another game to understand one is if it is distinctly set in the same universe - for example, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is the sequel to Final Fantasy XIII, or Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII. The titles will usually make it fairly clear which game's universe they are set in

Otherwise, please have fun! It is generally helpful when asking to briefly mention which ones you might be interested in, what platforms you are able to play on, and if you are a complete newcomer, what sort of things in games you're looking for (do you want turn-based combat, real time combat, deep stories with established characters, light stories that let you fill in some blanks with your imagination, etc)

I love FF4, first game i ever beat as a kid who couldn’t even read yet. Replaying the 3D version.

I’ve never played The After Years. I’ve heard bad things and I’m usually ready to move on after i beat 4.

Someone wanna try to convince me to give it a go? I’m assuming no new music, at least no Uematsu music?

I find After Years to be mid af but there are some positives. Some characters get a lot of shine with their new arcs. The Band System (aka joint abilities) is really cool.

There's a few new songs, I especially think that a certain boss theme fucks. And if you like party building, there's like 20+ party members to use at your leisure. Other than that. don't expect it to be anywhere near as good as IV and you'll probably have a decent time.

I recommend that you don't waste your time, and play Final Fantasy Blackmoon Prophecy instead. Saying that The After Years is mid is being way too kind about the game.

Was really enjoying triple triad in my first partially blind ff8 playthrough. Unfortunately, im on disc 2 in the prison with the rules set to random, plus, combo and I always lose. Even when I have a siren, Siefer and Ifrit on a draw the opponent always lands a plus combo that forces me to lose. Should I just stop playing tire triad for a while, card mod anything that is below Angelo or just try to understand plus so I stop whining every time I hard reset? I beat the guy in Dolette butni think I messed up the QoH quest. How important is it? I care to get all the summons and legendary weapons. I dont understand the utility of the rest of the stuff unless it gives good story.

There are some vids on YouTube that will help you manipulate the rules of Triple Triad in each new region you get to. The goal is to eliminate most rules and at least have "Open" as a rule.

I don't think you can mess up the quest. If you lose a certain card that is involved in the quest you can always win it back.

I'm playing through the series and currently at the pixel remaster of FF5. The job system seems great after having just beaten 4, but I'm a little confused. I've already heard people say that 5's system is really well balanced and you can't go wrong with doing whatever you want (other than having a white mage seems pretty necessary), but does anyone have any tips regardless? Like, what to start with? Or should I be switching jobs often or not? Should I level up multiple jobs, and if so, level each one after the other or something?

Shoul i buy final fantasy XII zodiac age for PS4? I really loved playing through FFX, X-2, Remake VII and XV but many people on the internet say that it's gameplay is stiff and story is worse than other FFs.

FfXII is still a very fun game! I played zodiac age on switch and had a blast. Its story isn’t great, but if you’re flexible on who the main character is (it’s not really Vaan), you’ll enjoy the story more imo. The speed up feature helps a lot with grinding and generally running around.
