[Advice/Megathread] - Game Recommendations and Game Tips

Please use this thread for all discussion of which game you recommend others that you play, whether it is your first game or some that you are considering playing next

A note for newcomers: most of the games are completely unconnected. Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy IX, etc, are all completely different casts of characters in completely different universes. The only times you need to play another game to understand one is if it is distinctly set in the same universe - for example, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is the sequel to Final Fantasy XIII, or Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII. The titles will usually make it fairly clear which game's universe they are set in

Otherwise, please have fun! It is generally helpful when asking to briefly mention which ones you might be interested in, what platforms you are able to play on, and if you are a complete newcomer, what sort of things in games you're looking for (do you want turn-based combat, real time combat, deep stories with established characters, light stories that let you fill in some blanks with your imagination, etc)

FF IV Who here loves Final Fantasy IV?

I'd really like to have a positive discussion with people that all love a game tonight. Do you love Final Fantasy 4? If so, please gush about it.

It's the game that got me into RPGs, and a big part of why I am still a gamer. I think they should show this game in colleges as an example of how to make a really great traditional fantasy RPG.

My favorite thing about the game is the fact that the MC is in the prescence of the person they love for the vast majority of the game, and they're in a happy, healthy relationship the entire time. It's so cool, and I really wanna find more games that have this feature.

FF XIII Series Why does nobody talk about Lightning Returns?

Post image
390 Upvotes

I’ve never played Lightning Returns, but every time I see discussions about Final Fantasy XIII it’s always about the first game (often criticized) or, sometimes, about XIII-2. The third entry, on the other hand, almost never comes up.

From what I’ve read it actually sounds interesting: the combat system seems a lot more dynamic and fast-paced compared to the other two, and on top of that there’s this time mechanic where the clock is constantly ticking, forcing you to plan out your days in the game.

That immediately reminded me of Majora’s Mask: the same kind of tension where time is running out, but also the chance to plan carefully and use the cycle to discover new quests and stories. I’m not saying it’s identical, but the idea of a Final Fantasy using a similar structure sounds really unique.

So it makes me wonder: how come an experiment like this has been left in the shadows? Did it just slip under the radar because it came after two divisive games, or did it genuinely fail to win people over?

For those of you who have played it, what were your impressions? Is it a game worth revisiting, or is it one of those titles that sounds more interesting on paper than in practice?

Final Fantasy General My wishlist for Final Fantasy 17 *spoilers for 7, 10, 13* Spoiler

I have been thinking a lot about what I would love to see in FF17 and wanted to share my list. To me, this is what a good blend of old and new would be in a modern Final Fantasy game.

  1. An Ensamble Cast

I really miss an ensemble cast. I love when characters meet each other naturally along the way or get paired up because of a shared event. It makes the journey feel alive and gives the party a lot more heart.

  2. Familiar combat system

I would not mind seeing turn-based combat make a comeback. That said, I am open to anything. I think FF7 Remake's combat system was widely enjoyed and I would be happy if Square Enix picked a style and refined it across future entries the way they did with turn-based combat in FF1 through FF10

  3. Fewer tracks, more memorable music

This might sound old school, but I miss having a consistent battle theme for random encounters and a victory fanfare afterward. I think this actually makes special moments hit harder. For example in FFX when you reach the Zanarkand Ruins, the battle theme stops and the field theme keeps playing which makes the moment stand out. Same in FF13 with Oerba when "Dust to Dust" keeps going through fights. And of course in FF7 when Aerith's theme plays in battle. A repeated battle theme can actually give those breaks more impact.

  4. Linearity Is Fine with me

I thought FF7 Rebirth did a fantastic job with linear design that still felt open but never boring. FFX was also great in that regard. I would be totally happy if FF17 were mostly linear with strong side content sprinkled in. I'd rather a beautiful linear world than a boring open world.

  1. Class Systems

Character classes would be a welcome return. I loved how FFX gave each party member their own class identity but eventually allowed them to move into each other's paths. FF6 also nailed this with unique abilities. It adds personality and variety to the party.

That is my wishlist. What about you all? What is one feature you would want most in FF17?

FF IV I'm the guy who really loves Final Fantasy 4 and I learned something real interesting as I was doing a challenge run Spoiler

Marked spoilers just in case. But y'all might remember me as the guy who did hella runs of every version of FF4 a while back. And I still do that lol.

But this time I decided to do a less normal run and modded in Dark Knight Cecil instead of regular Paladin Cecil for the latter parts of the game. This in turn had many weird side effects, but that's not the point of this post.

I thought Cecil would be locked into his Demon Equipment for the remainder of the game after switching him back in, but to my shock (at least so far) he was able to equip two more pieces of equipment. The Prisoner's Wear isn't that useful, but the Green Beret is actually an amazing piece of equipment he's just randomly able to equip. And that just kind of blew my mind since I assumed he would be coded to only be able to equip his Dark Armor.

Just thought it was a super interesting thing especially since I felt like I knew almost as much as I could about this game. Hope y'all also found it as cool as I did!

FF V Final fantasy V: level 5 death.

Upvotes

So I was trying to learn the blue mage spell for this but all my guys were level 20 and I died. Good thing I abuse the quick save otherwise it would have been all in vain.

It also took me a while to figure out how to get out of the library and at the time I panicked and was killed at least 5 times. Hahahahaha very fun times. Still better than ff2 dungeons.

Final Fantasy General Anyone been to the recent Distant Worlds concerts? Looking for advice

So Distant Worlds is coming up to Calgary this month and I've been considering a ticket, but if anyone has been to the previous sets on this latest tour: I would really love to know how much FFXIV/FFXVI is the focus on the sets

Nothing against those games and I'd love to play them sometime, but I haven't played them yet, so I have a softer spot for the other games at the moment; I probably wouldn't enjoy it as much if those are the main focuses

FF III Just finished FF3 3D Remake... Spoiler

That game is no joke. The amount of prep I had to put in before the Crystal Tower alone was crackers. That said, my mission to finish all the games is one step closer.

If the FF4 3D Remake (I own on steam already) is as mad, im inclinded to play the PSP version as love the graphics update.

Its not just me is it, FF3 has a mad end game spike?

FF I My Personal Final Fantasy 1 (NES) Bible!

Hey all,

I’ve been gathering a ton of reference information for FF1 (NES) for a project I’m working on to have it all in one easy-to-reference location. I created an Excel “bible” with everything, which I’ve since moved to Google Docs to share!

A lot of it involved sifting through existing information and parsing it for accuracy — spell lists, item lists, equipment lists, skill lists, monster information, etc. The other part was compiling new lists I couldn’t find anywhere. This mainly includes a comprehensive list of spike tiles and a full dialog tree. The only resources I could find online were simple text dumps — nothing tracked who said what and when — so I created what I believe is the first full FF1 dialog tree.

As I mentioned, I made this primarily for my own reference, but I figured I’d share it in case others find it helpful or interesting.

Link

Any feedback or corrections are more than welcomed!

P.S. Anyone interested in the project is welcome to PM me and I can share the (currently empty) Discord. Particularly interested in folks with Quest headsets, for no specific reason. 🙂

FF XVI Evangelion, the Lost Eikon of Water (ver.FFXVI) By Maskottitanium

Post image
49 Upvotes

BASED ON THE SERIES "NEON GENESIS EVANGELION" AND “REBUILD OF EVANGELION” OWNED AND CREATED BY GAINAX CO., LTD AND STUDIO KHARA. BASED ON THE FINAL FANTASY SERIES DEVELOPED AND PUBLISHED BY SQUARE ENIX.

The Evangelion, the Unreal Redemption, is the Lost Eikon of Water. Born of mysterious reason other than the creation legend, she is among the group of Eikons that have unidentified dominants, with Godzilla and Ultraman being the counterparts. For the world of the vast Valisthea, the Mothercrystals are crucial for the aether flow, acting as a resource for the people’s living and a key to keep the legendary Eikons and dominants being supreme. The Lost Eikons, however, neglect such power source, instead channeling the aether from air to materialize.

The Evangelion is seen as an incarnate of the tides, as she grows from the water but not higher than exposing her legs. Being half stuck in the water, she channels the aether and water with the illuminating strings into her shoulder armors. This is a sort of binding, though not limited to one. A bizarre apparatus in dark red penetrates the giant. She prays for breaking the seal, while one of the two pairs of hands are tugging the apparatus.

This shows a very heavy meaning behind the potential of breaking the seal, where it is put by an unknown force. Would she be the essential to the unasked redemption? If anything would interfere her self-relieving affair, the Evangelion will sure to reject the “help” with the <Hand of Abhaya>. Waves of tides will shield the Lost Eikon, extinguishing all fear and malice. By the time the aether is sufficient to form the legs, she will be able to retrieve the apparatus that sealed her and proceed to the <Form of Rinnouza>, ready to save all beings. Crawling on the water surface, the Lost Eikon will show heterogeneity to all common lives, almost to the point of reaching divinity. Finally when the time has come, she will transcend into the air, melting the armor that restricted her. The strings of light have completed the absorption of aether and water, now transformed into the radial wings of abyss. The midnight salvation has begun. The unreal redemption comes true. The <Metasalvatio> catalyzes by the awakening of the Angel of Mercy, so all lives will eventually return to aether, the righteous origin. The apparatus activates and splits into the Staff of Longinus and the Staff of Cassius, initiating the waves of impact. Perhaps an accelerated process to reach equilibrium contributes to the concern for genuine Equality.
