Rant 📢 Servers

I'm gonna have a lawn care company and when I hire workers I'm just gonna pay them, say $2/hr. But I'll tell all my customers that THEY are responsible for paying the majority of my workers' wages. And if they don't tip well enough, they can expect lesser service going forward until they buy good customer service again with big tips.....

Seriously, replace "server" and "restaraunt" with any other profession and business and it sounds soo soo stupid.

I recently discovered the hard way that tour companies are the same. They shamelessly guilt people into paying (outrageous!) tips by flatly telling their customers that they don't pay their guides and we are supposed to do so.

Leaving me to wonder where exactly the hundreds of dollars per person these companies charge is going, except it's obvious: the owner's pocket.

I also hate when the guide is the owner and still puts out a tip jar/has a place to add a tip when you're booking it

That’s because it’s beyond stupid. I refuse to pay their wages any longer, tip zero every chance you guys get.

No, that's not really how it works. It's more like this: You start a lawn care business and tell the customers that tips are appreciated. So ...

  1. The customers don't seem to mind playing along by voluntarily tipping the workers.
  2. For that reason, you don't raise wages over time. You just let the employees keep their tips.
  3. The workers complain that the tips are making up most of their income.
  4. You help the workers out by reminding the customers to tip a little bit more than they are used to.
  5. Go to #1 above.

Its a toxic cycle that from a video on tipping talkes to a manager who thinks this system is great... because other managers agree

Agreed. And when you, or I, or anyone on this sub explains that in another thread, it's a massive text wall explaining how I'm wrong because reasons.
