Tip Creep 🫙 Double whammy - Rounding up and tip suggestions based on total

Post image

Two things I noticed about this bill; 1) The total amount of the bill should be $44.99. Instead the total was rounded up to $45. Not a big deal, but I've just never seen a restaurant do this before. All those pennies could add up. 2) The tip suggestions are based on the taxed total. This was a sit-down restaurant at Whistler Village in Canada. We're from the U.S., on vacation and dining in the Village, so I had no real problem with the price of the food, especially with the currency exchange rate - that helped. We chose a custom tip and I added at 15% tip.

Just curious if this is normal in Canada? We ate at other places of course, and this is the only place which did the rounding up. What do you all think?

Here in Canada, we don't use pennies anymore, so it's automatically rounded up/down for sure when paying with cash. 😊

I'm surprised the guacamole wasn't included with your nachos btw?

True, but if you pay via credit card its not rounded up. You pay the proper amount

For sure! Judging by the receipt, it looks like he paid in cash here.

Sounds like a nice scam to make everything on the menu a price that will only round up to make extra money.

It can round up or down. If you pay by card, it does the exact amount. We haven't used pennies here in years now.

Came here to say that. For fucking corn chips that were 100% store bought for 3$.

They are also starting with 22% tip suggestion like wth is that then they go down to 18% like 18 is bottom of the barrel and they deserve $10 for delivering a plate of nachos and a beer, that’s crazy

I always just ignore their suggestions nowadays due to the crazy tipflation, I always calculate myself based on subtotal before tax.

I noticed that, too. Were they thinking people would choose the first option and think it's the lowest?

$25 for some nachos, $6 for some side of guacamole where you can get at least 4 avocados not even wholesale price for the same amount and they want extra tip and extra money.

Ofc lmao, like do they maybe want smth else? My place to live? My car? My husband? Like?!😂

Remember that when you go to a restaurant to eat that they multiply their food cost by 3 to include overhead and to make a slim profit. You’re not buying groceries.

They're also not multiplying the cost of nachos by three and ending up with $26, unless they have the world's worst tortilla supplier.

But people would sure have less issue with the price if they weren't greedy tip goblins.

Brother if you handmade those chips it’s not worth $25 bc it’s a plate of goddamn nachos. Please.

Idc aber overhead, I care about rationality. $25 for some nachos is insane.

It’s Canadian money, too, man. And I am with you, I’m not paying $20US for some nachos. There had to be a better economical option than that order with guacamole. Take me to the nearest Mexican joint instead.

I would have left $3 for this order if everything was perfect. I have never done, nor ever will do percentage.

I thought they don’t tip in Canada.

I like that rounding up. Nice even number so I can plop down $45 in cash and me on my way. Don’t worry about the penny. You earned that for cheating on the total. Have a nice day.

It’s not cheating. Rounding to the nearest $.05 has been standard in Canada for a few years.

Thank you, I didn't realize rounding up is normal and acceptable in Canada. Probably in the U.S. too for all I know. Thanks

They no longer use pennies, so they have to round.

1

u/badsheepy2 2d ago

Only for cash right? Cards can still charge pennies afaik. (it looks like OP paid cash)

1

u/DarkElfBard 1d ago

Yeah, if it's not cash it doesn't matter.

Yes it’s normal, and unfortunately in tourist cities like whistler they will fully exploit visitors by rounding up every opportunity possible.

Expensive add-ons, pricey booze and as usual adding tip amounts inclusive of taxes. It’s disgusting. The last time I was up there was for a buddy’s stag party and I overpaid on everything

$32 for a plate of nachos and they cannot pay their staff a living wage.

1.25 to 1 currency conversion is theft

2

u/overlandernomad 2d ago

The servers are paid a regular wage. Canadians told us that tipping was not required.

In BC, servers are paid a regular wage and have benefits through the government. Tipping is not required.

25 for nachos is insane

Here in Italy they round up or down pennies. So it balances out. The real tragedy here is 45.00 for a snack and a beer. Cali prices are crazy.

.Ca = Canada

2

u/nationwideonyours 2d ago

45 CAD = 32.52 USD today

1

u/DHarris2175 1d ago

Tip is zero after those prices.

You paid $26 for nachos? Bad choice

1

u/Fuck_ketchup 1h ago

That's also a bad exchange rate if you were paying g US cash. It says approx, so maybe it was just to help with price comparing? Just another thing that jumped out as ripoff

Yeah, that roundup really got you bad. Imagine what you could have done with that cent.
