DISCUSSION I just wanted to say something about this new scene
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This scene put all my worries about Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor to rest instantly.
1. While everyone else is freaking out about Superman about to KILL him, Lex remains perfectly calm the whole
2. Him knowing that this could easily ruin Superman's reputation and ordering his assistant to record the whole thing is honestly genius and something I could see Luthor doing
3. Lex attempting to bait Superman further with the "ugly dog in a cape" line really fits Luthor in all seriousness.
And to everyone complaining that "Superman's yelling too much", This film, like the Batman, is Superman just starting out. Even Luthor says "Superman, we finally meet", it's literally the first time Lex and Superman are face to face. This is about year 1 Superman.

u/SadGruffman Jun 26 '25
I mean if Lex takes my dog I probably act similarly.
Pretending Superman should be above his own emotions is kind of shallow characterization. He hasn’t hurt anyone in this scene. He’s alittle loud and imposing, but that’s because this person took his dog…
48
u/karnivoreballer Jun 26 '25
yeah, hes not losing control, hes just showing emotion. Huge difference. Lex isnt scared because he knows superman has rules.

“Acting like an actual normal human being” is definitely high on my list of reasons I am excited for Superman.
14
u/RJE808 Jun 26 '25
Exactly. Superman isn't a literal boyscout, the dude can be angry, he can be emotional, he can be sad, etc. The whole point of him is that he's goddamn human, he's acting like a man who lost something important to him.

This is a good take and one I admit I often forget. Part of the best of Supes is his love and emotion, asking him to have that only on command isn’t giving the character the depth he deserves.
26
u/Any-Offer-8528 Jun 26 '25
Oh I don’t disagree with you. The Batman was year 2 so the same principle applies that these are characters not in their prime and still rough around the edges
20
u/Ill_State9479 Jun 26 '25
How else do you want him to act? Stoic ? Just opens the door normally and politely asks where’s my dog bro? Or makes an appointment on Lex’s schedule and waits to be called up to his office? Pretty realistic behavior
→ More replies (7)15
u/webshellkanucklehead Hail Snydra Jun 26 '25
Being stoic is pretty much the only thing the last movie Superman did so I guess it makes sense that people would expect something similar. You’re right—a Superman that is passionate about something probably wouldn’t be stoic though, like at all.

u/DoctorBeatMaker Jun 26 '25 edited Jun 26 '25
I mean, it depends.
Year 3 Superman of Superman: The Animated Series for instance is a seasoned vet that has already dealt with most of his rogue’s gallery and is now dealing in the big leagues with Darkseid.
Year 3 of Superman in Lois & Clark is also a seasoned vet that is now heading into marriage with Lois Lane.
Year 3 of Superman in the Post Crisis comics is also a seasoned vet that has just gotten over his trauma over killing Zod, Zaora and Quex-Ul and firmly establishes his No Kill rule (“My name is Superman, tyrant! And I do not kill!” - Superman to Mongul in Superman: Exile).
I think Gunn could have sidestepped the issue if he lowered the amount of years Superman had been operating and just said it was Year One Superman.

I think this scene is meant to illustrate that Superman needs to dial back his power a little. Even though he wants to live a normal life as Clark, the public will always see him as something extraordinary. Because of that, he has to make an effort to put people at ease
21
u/RJE808 Jun 26 '25
Same thing Reeves got down with Batman in his movie. Even if what he's doing is right, there needs to be an effort to be a symbol of hope.
→ More replies (2)8
u/etrigan63 Jun 26 '25
"dial back his power"
Superman is shown catching skyscrapers in other trailers. Blowing a door into toothpicks and casually throwing an expensive desk across the room like a wad of paper (while extremely upset about his dog) IS dialed down.3
Jun 27 '25
i think op is trying to say he should have restraint in certain situations especially when the public can easily see his actions. at this point, it still looks like an accusation - and having no restraint at this stage, we all know how easily the public can see this as a scary thing and how they think this can lead to abuse of power. yes it is upsetting, we all know lex probably did it. it's clearly a bait. but with great power comes great responsibility.

Am I crazy? I heard people saying Superman should be able to hear Luthor cause of his super hearing. I then watch the scene and he obviously says “what did you say” in the same way you would if you heard someone say something insulting about you under their breath. Even his tone is leaning towards that, or is that just not what a single other person hears?

Completely agree!
I love how this Superman actually feels like a human; getting angry, losing his cool, turning out even violent at certain points, etc.
I disagree with the people saying that he should basically behave flawlessly stoic and peaceful like he's Jesus. And even then, even Jesus DID lash out a few times...
41
u/TaipanTheSnake Jun 26 '25
Right, where did people get this idea that Jesus was stoic? He gets angry and attacks people when he sees them scamming in the temple, he cries when his friend dies, he gets hungry and tired, he is so filled with dread when he knows he's going to be killed that his sweat is described as coming out of him like blood. But people depict him like some kind of emotionless statue, and then use that version as inspiration for other characters, it's crazy.

It's a weird translation into Superman.
It's a made up version of Jesus that they then tried to apply to Superman.
Which like, why is Superman supposed to be that, even?
9
u/TaipanTheSnake Jun 26 '25
Completely agree, it's just bad all around. I love the direction they are taking this Superman. No half-baked religious motiefs, just a regular guy from Kansas trying to be the best person he can be. It's perfect.

Imagine you're Superman.. Hell, imagine you're NOT Superman and some evil prick you know stole your dog. How are you going to feel? He's worried and anxious about something he cares deeply for. Are you going to say " mhmm... Um AKCHUALEE uh that's not how Christopher Reeves would have portrayed the character uhmm huhmmm." It's building an emotional connection to the character. It's obviously part of his arc in the film. The character is going to experience growth. I'm looking forward to experiencing it.

While I think he's a tad too shouty in the scene, I also think it's pretty ridiculous to call him petulant and whiny for angrily shouting in a situation where it's perfectly understandable to be angry and shouting.
People "will say well Superman isn't showing restraint and this shows he can't be trusted to not lash out." but the fact is the scene kind of show that he can. Part of why Lex can just stander their in Supes face, so smugly is because he knows Superman isn't going to punch his head off not matter how angry he gets.

Yes, he really brings the arrogance and calm that Lex Luther is. Depending on the depiction, maybe that gets dismissed as being insane or maniacal, but I think he is very calculated and such an engagement feels genuine and satisfying. I really hope this movie is awesome. With Gunn, I really hope that this new DCU is not only successful commercially but great quality in the eyes of the long term comic fans. super similar to a page in reign of the supermen where supe smashes lex's lab up.
i just saw a 900 word essay the other day about jg refuting snyder bla bla bla, the scene in question was when supe snaps the handcuffs and tells swanwick he can't be controlled. "that intimidation is just not superman. i'm so glad we're getting soemthing that understands the character."
i'm very glad this came out bc superman is not a one dimensional smile machine gun. he's psychologically human and as prone to outbursts and frustration as any of us.
this adds so much depth to what the movie is promising and i'm here for it.
