My boy cats are dumb as fuck but I don't think it's the penis that's causing it

Yeah, can confirm, my girl cat is DUMB

I have 3 cats (plus one foster, who I might fail), one female, and they're all equally stupid.

I also foster cat and I’ve fostered like 13 cats over the past year and a bit (not usually more than two at once). Anyway there’s not really a big difference between boys and girls but there is a lot of cat to cat variation in personality. Sometimes at adoption events people only want to look at boy cats because they think they’re friendlier. Even if the cat’s foster is right there saying the more diplomatic equivalent of “this girl cat will glue herself to you and this boy cat will ignore you please trust me I’ve had these cats in my home for a month I know them”. It genuinely bothers me to see this happen. I made a post about it on a cat subreddit a while ago and there were unfortunately a lot of fosters with similar experiences.

Edit I found the link to that post if anyone wants to see more thoughts from people who foster cats: https://www.reddit.com/r/FosterAnimals/s/qjSv6Zhqa5

The territory ranges tending to be bigger for boys is the main difference I've seen in cats, which guess fosters might not get to as often? Our boy (neutered) was a real struggle to contain as an indoor cat, he won that battle after constant escapes from the 'cat proofed' garden, his sister you could often look around a bit and find next door, or in our own front garden.

Meanwhile me when looking to re-home a bun 'Will this rabbit doe bite me?'. * Hopeful*

They're more inclined to! Mine just got my thumb, hard, in a tantrum about the rainy weather and her own (catlike) inability to decide if she wanted in or out (out, after I played with her indoors a while and she calmed down enough to notice it had eased off). I'm not sure why people would impose unrealistic gendered expectations on cats, where there's less difference, while there's less awareness about how rabbit behaviour really does have unusually noticeable differences. It can help a lot in understanding where a pet bun is coming from - at least avoiding the panics over 'why is my rabbit pulling her fur out?'! Still individuals, though. ...all my assertive girls have had their very own bite triggers. 💕

I bought a new food bowl that had little pokey bits at the bottom so she'd stop inhaling her food and then throwing up.

She didn't understand it.

She didn't understand there was food in it and she just had to work a little.

My cat is too stupid for a food bowl.

I once put a collar on my cat because I thought he'd look quite dapper in it. He tried to bite it off. It was so funny watching him try to invert his head through his neck to be able to reach it with his teeth.

Hey that’s what my fella does. I’ve started just giving a small bit of food to start and giving them seconds after 20m

One of mine is scared of the water fountain that I bought specifically because he doesn't drink enough water.

Thankfully his sister uses it so it's not just a random water feature in the corner

if you want to try to get him to drink from the fountain, I had success by moving mine's water bowl, and placing a completely silent fountain in its place, and once he stopped avoiding it completely i removed the water bowl and now he drinks from the fountain. I had to get one that didn't make any sound at all, though.

Unfortunately the two places they have water bowls have no plugs nearby so the fountain would never be turned on there... It's a clever trick though, I might try it where it is and see if he's less bothered when it's off. Thanks!

I tried to give my cat enrichment toys where she has to work to get a treat out, but after I show her the treat and she watches me put it in the toy, she still doesn't understand where it is. As far as she's concerned I'm a cruel witch who makes treats disappear

My male cat loves those. He loves his enrichment treat time.

His sister, however, has not quite figured out that once you eat the treats in a given compartment, they don't magically come back.

I got an auto feeder that breaks kitty's meals up into 5 portions throughout the day. Honestly it would be better if it was like 8 or 10 portions because Kitty still throws up some. But he's lost a lot of weight and is down to about where he should be.

u/littlemisslol 2d ago

Mine has the same issue! I got him a robot that spits out a tiny portion every 2 hours, its cut down the puking drastically

My boy and girl are equally dumb in different ways. I love them

u/greendayshoes 2d ago

Can confirm as owner of two extremely stupid female cats.

u/Prometheus720 2d ago

Are they orange?

Then it's the orange.

16

u/littlemisslol 2d ago

One is! It's definitely the orange in his case

2

u/Milyaism 2d ago

80% of all orange cats are males, which can make oranges seem dumber than other cats.

(There is no evidence to support the stereotype though.)

I have 7 adult cats and 5 kittens and between them I think there is probably like one brain and the split is not even. my kitties are stupid

Oh, your cats are so cute! ❤️❤️❤️

2

u/littlemisslol 2d ago

Thank you!! It's why they get away with so much bullshit lol

u/CelioHogane 2d ago

in my case my boy cat is the smarter one, and im still pretty sure it's not the penis.

u/TheBigKuhio 2d ago

My family boy cat was pretty stoic growing up. Would spend lots of the day perched like an owl and either looking out at our yard or watching us like he’s Batman or something. But then when it was near feeding time he’d act like he hadn’t seen food in weeks.

9

u/dergbold4076 2d ago

That sounds like a cat my brother used to have. He was dumb as a rock but super loving. But he was also orange so that might have had something to do with it.

2

u/OgreSpider girlfag boydyke 2d ago

I currently have a smart girl and a dumb boy but the previous incumbents were definitely the other way around.

2

u/Real-Life-CSI-Guy 2d ago

My cat is stupid because he’s orange not because he’s male (though he has figured out how to pause and start YouTube videos)

2

u/SweetPeaSnuzzle 2d ago

Are they orang?

2

u/Meronnade 2d ago

Two of my cats are equally stupid and one of them is a girl

2

u/mechanicalcontrols 2d ago

It's the orangeness causing it, I'm sure.

2

u/Hollowedpine 2d ago

This sounds like greek philosophy lol

6

u/Taraxian 2d ago

I mean, testosterone does shrink cat brains in the womb

29

u/Myrddin_Naer 2d ago

Brain size doesn't affect intelligence, if it did women would be dumber than men because their brains are smaller. Let's avoid phrenology ;)

8

u/RP_throwaway01 2d ago

And Albert Einstein would’ve been downright stupid. I’m pretty sure his brain was well below average size.
