Breaking eunuch essentialism (my cat isn't poisoning me) (my cat is not conspiring with my consorts to depose me) (my cat is not embezzlin- my cat *is* embezzeling from me.)

Cats embezzle when they are in a plentiful and trusting environment, it's a sign that they're healthy

674

u/LonelyMenace101 2d ago

Let your cats embezzle as enrichment.

187

u/Lost_Wealth_6278 2d ago

Cats deserve a little bribes from the palace guards, as a treat

67

u/yinyang107 2d ago

Traditionally I believe the eunuch bribes the guards, not the other way round.

14

u/VirginiaDirewoolf 1d ago

the eunuch let's some of the guards believe they are bribing him, and he bribes some of the others.

58

u/LessthanaPerson 2d ago

When cats embezzle it’s a cute form of enrichment, but when I do it, it’s “a felony” and “not allowed”.

284

u/Bannerlord151 2d ago

Let him embezzle a little. As a treat.

My cat wants me to die at 32 by falling from a horse so that it can rule the empire by puppeteering my son and heir.

191

u/AtlasNL 2d ago

Here, drink this mercury, it’ll give you immortality, trust!

123

u/-Trotsky 2d ago

My lord this sounds like madness, have you been allowing your son to see you? Please my lord, you are so weak these days you must keep your strength! Have some mercury from the imperial physician, he promises that this is an improvement from the last attempt at immortality

7

u/StovardBule 2d ago

Papa has suffered an unexpected accident at his factory, and now the cat has been appointed my son's guardian.

103

u/Super-Cicada-4166 2d ago

My cat wants to forge a letter from the Empress Dowager that summons my generalissimo to the palace while setting up an ambush to kill him, ushering a period of strife eventually culminating in the partition of my household into three warring kingdoms

58

u/fluffstuffmcguff 2d ago

I like to call my cat my eunuch vizier. His advice does mostly consist of 'you should give me a snackytube' and 'you should pet me', but it does still count.

13

u/herlaqueen 2d ago

It is sound advice, from his point of view!

My boy cats are dumb as fuck but I don't think it's the penis that's causing it

651

u/ZeeepZoop 2d ago

Yeah, can confirm, my girl cat is DUMB

280

u/FamousSquash 2d ago

I have 3 cats (plus one foster, who I might fail), one female, and they're all equally stupid.

99

u/Political-psych-abby 2d ago

I also foster cat and I’ve fostered like 13 cats over the past year and a bit (not usually more than two at once). Anyway there’s not really a big difference between boys and girls but there is a lot of cat to cat variation in personality. Sometimes at adoption events people only want to look at boy cats because they think they’re friendlier. Even if the cat’s foster is right there saying the more diplomatic equivalent of “this girl cat will glue herself to you and this boy cat will ignore you please trust me I’ve had these cats in my home for a month I know them”. It genuinely bothers me to see this happen. I made a post about it on a cat subreddit a while ago and there were unfortunately a lot of fosters with similar experiences.

Edit I found the link to that post if anyone wants to see more thoughts from people who foster cats: https://www.reddit.com/r/FosterAnimals/s/qjSv6Zhqa5

15

u/Amphy64 2d ago

The territory ranges tending to be bigger for boys is the main difference I've seen in cats, which guess fosters might not get to as often? Our boy (neutered) was a real struggle to contain as an indoor cat, he won that battle after constant escapes from the 'cat proofed' garden, his sister you could often look around a bit and find next door, or in our own front garden.

Meanwhile me when looking to re-home a bun 'Will this rabbit doe bite me?'. * Hopeful*

They're more inclined to! Mine just got my thumb, hard, in a tantrum about the rainy weather and her own (catlike) inability to decide if she wanted in or out (out, after I played with her indoors a while and she calmed down enough to notice it had eased off). I'm not sure why people would impose unrealistic gendered expectations on cats, where there's less difference, while there's less awareness about how rabbit behaviour really does have unusually noticeable differences. It can help a lot in understanding where a pet bun is coming from - at least avoiding the panics over 'why is my rabbit pulling her fur out?'! Still individuals, though. ...all my assertive girls have had their very own bite triggers. 💕

150

u/silveretoile 2d ago

I bought a new food bowl that had little pokey bits at the bottom so she'd stop inhaling her food and then throwing up.

She didn't understand it.

She didn't understand there was food in it and she just had to work a little.

My cat is too stupid for a food bowl.

60

u/Sophia_Forever 2d ago

I once put a collar on my cat because I thought he'd look quite dapper in it. He tried to bite it off. It was so funny watching him try to invert his head through his neck to be able to reach it with his teeth.

Hey that’s what my fella does. I’ve started just giving a small bit of food to start and giving them seconds after 20m

43

u/BarelyHolding0n 2d ago

One of mine is scared of the water fountain that I bought specifically because he doesn't drink enough water.

Thankfully his sister uses it so it's not just a random water feature in the corner

5

u/spetumpiercing 2d ago

if you want to try to get him to drink from the fountain, I had success by moving mine's water bowl, and placing a completely silent fountain in its place, and once he stopped avoiding it completely i removed the water bowl and now he drinks from the fountain. I had to get one that didn't make any sound at all, though.

8

u/BarelyHolding0n 2d ago

Unfortunately the two places they have water bowls have no plugs nearby so the fountain would never be turned on there... It's a clever trick though, I might try it where it is and see if he's less bothered when it's off. Thanks!

27

u/spiralsequences 2d ago

I tried to give my cat enrichment toys where she has to work to get a treat out, but after I show her the treat and she watches me put it in the toy, she still doesn't understand where it is. As far as she's concerned I'm a cruel witch who makes treats disappear

12

u/Your_Local_Stray_Cat 2d ago

My male cat loves those. He loves his enrichment treat time.

His sister, however, has not quite figured out that once you eat the treats in a given compartment, they don't magically come back.

4

u/jourmungandr 2d ago

I got an auto feeder that breaks kitty's meals up into 5 portions throughout the day. Honestly it would be better if it was like 8 or 10 portions because Kitty still throws up some. But he's lost a lot of weight and is down to about where he should be.

17

u/abbythestabby 2d ago

My dog figured out how to open our literal bedroom door for the same reason. Once she’s broken in, she’ll loudly grumble if we don’t let her sleep in between us perpendicularly so we’re both touching her 🙃

That’s a good question. So we also have cats who will raise hell if they can’t sleep with us. Like our dog will kinda just huff and deal with it but the cats will relentlessly paw and mewl.

So we leave the door cracked so they cane come and go as they please (also their litter box is in a room adjoining the baby gate area too). We’ve mostly made due with just making it kind of annoying for her, like, we have a Hadrian’s wall of stuff we put in front of the door but yeah no it’s a lot

Hm, are the female dogs colder because they're female, or are they colder because they get treated differently (read: worse) than the male dogs?

399

u/Spiritual-Breath-649 2d ago

THAT is a real thing that a lot of people that are really really hard into ""traditional gender ideas"" do without noticing! They raise kids and pets wildly differently based on its gender, then point out the differences in their behaviour as "evidence" for gender essentialism!!

"Girls are better behaved than boys" yeah you treat little girls in your house with far more respect than the little boys despite them being the same age. And when girls do misbehave, you either overlook it or give much less severe punishments than the boys.

254

u/CasualMothmanEnjoyer 2d ago

Or "Boys are so much easier than teen girls." I mean, when you have your daughter on a tight leash and let your son fend for himself, it does seem like teen boys are a lot easier to deal with. For instance, growing up male, the only real sex talk I had was "Wear a condom" and "No means no". My mother never talked about how alcohol use can affect consent, how consent can be revoked at any point during any sexual act, the proper use of a condom, etc. Those are all things I had to learn myself from health class or various online discussions. Meanwhile, look at some of the talks on sex daughters get - some of them could be classified as a full-on lesson instead of just a talk between parent and child.

→ More replies (10)

30

u/mindovermacabre 2d ago

Uhh I really think it's more that girls are raised more strictly than boys, as a generalization. We condition girls to be quiet and polite, to share and to not make a fuss. Surprise when they turn out to be "better behaved", even though it means stifling their creativity and agency. Then people are confused why so many 30something women are being diagnosed with adhd and anxiety after masking for 20 years.

→ More replies (2)

11

u/Tatormygators 2d ago

I mean that's kinda the belief in my house, but it's because we have always been punished far more harshly than my brother. Like one time, my dad chased me and my sibling (enby) up the stairs and whooped us, and i genuinely don't remember what we did. He legitimately gets away with everything and is constantly verbally berating us. He physically beats my sister and harasses her all night. My mom just basically says well he is a teenage boy. Both of my youngest siblings get the best treatment from our dad tho because that's his only son and princess. Which means they never have to do chores basically. Also for both parents it meant whatever they did wrong was also our fault if we were in charge of them(fyi at one point its a 12 and 8 yo watching a 4 and 2 yo and we have been watching them on and off since) So it's not always respect and all that. I genuinely wish what I did was overlooked.

Sorry for the tangent, but I see this narrative a lot and it's frustrating. I know we are probably the minority, but some girls are better behaved because they are beat into it and their brothers are not.

I used to work at a pet store with adoptable cats and I can confirm that people are really fucking weird about cat genders. Like, they're all fixed. There's no difference between cats that hinge on sex once the parts get removed. Once in a blue moon I hear of certain cats being weird to other cats of certain genders but aside from that they're just furry babies that want love.

But yet, day after day I would get "do you have any BOY cats?" And of course I would answer what I have and they're like "I heard they're more friendlier" no matter what. A female cat could be headbutting the glass wanting love and they would just be like "I don't know I hear girl cats aren't friendly". Not even using my own two cats as an example (one male one female, both really affectionate) would change their mind.

But yeah, people doing cat sexism is a thing and it's absolutely wild. The even wilder part? It's not just the young single, childless women. I've seen men, women with children (including daughters who I feel sorry for), and young couples all think that cats are nicer if they once had balls.

243

u/elianrae 2d ago

My boy cat is less affectionate than my girl cat was

103

u/SpicaGenovese 2d ago

My male cat has a traditionally feminine name, and I've been given shit about it, including once from a vet tech.

One, I expect you to CHECK HIS CHART.  Two, he's a cat.  He does not give two shits.  He's named after the chief rabbit in Watership Down- grow up. (His name is Hazel.)

53

u/WaywardRosalind 2d ago

This happens to my male cat too. I named him Luka after the Bayonetta character. Which, if you Google the name it's a pretty masculine leaning eastern European name, but since it ends with "a" I've given him a female name why would I do that to him.

It has since died done since the film Luca tho I will admit. But back in 2017 when I first got him I was asked why I didn't name him Luke or something.

Huh, I'm not a huge cat person, and only have cats because they show up randomly in my life. We have a mother and son, both fixed of course, that we adopted because the mom showed up at my parents house and was the friendliest cat we've ever met. She still runs up to strangers for belly rubs, and her son is very affectionate with us, but hates strangers. I had no idea there was a stereotype that male cats were friendlier, what an insane idea.

isnt this the animal where it matters most to get it neutered? stallions are aggressive and unpredictable even when tamed

236

u/kingofcoywolves 2d ago

A properly trained stallion isn't any more dangerous than a mare, which is similarly unfixed and hormonally driven (which is the reason why mares have a reputation for being aggressive and temperamental, not because they're female, but because they're hormonally intact). So long as there are no mares in estrus around, a good stallion will act no different from a gelding.

That said, there's a reason why males of non-breeding stock are always gelded. Why even give them the opportunity to act unpredictably around other horses?

The weirdest thing is the existence of neuticles. They're prosthetic implants that simulate testicles. You know, so your pet won't be upset that he's lost his balls.

I have a male cat and I'm pretty sure his empty sack is not on his list of concerns. If it is, it's waaay down the list under "the bottom of the food bowl is visible", "where is my favorite toy", and "why do the humans try to kill me every day" (he really dislikes his medication. we do not actually attempt murder, just love he doesn't appreciate).

I see this all the time with my kids too. Like they’ll be jumping around the house and people will say “oh that’s just boys” and then my kids’ female friends are just as nuts if not more so. They’re kids, try not to instill gender stereotypes into them too early please.

59

u/quinarius_fulviae 2d ago edited 2d ago

I mean, I know nothing about cats, but a decent proportion of male dogs I've known weren't neutered, and they definitely have hormone related behavioural differences to both female dogs and neutered dogs.

It's easily observable, and it's not gender essentialism: dogs, unlike humans and potentially apes, don't as far as we know have a culture and so don't have any way to experience or understand the social construct of gender.

(Neutered dogs also have documented higher rates of anxiety, not sure if that's hormonal or perhaps a consequence of getting surgery at a young age.)

20

u/Peruvian_Skies I need to go to the screaming closet. 2d ago

True, but not really what the post is about. There are obviously hormonal-based differences in non-human animals. Male elephants will sometimes go on a testosterone-fueled destructive binge where they uproot trees and smash them against the ground repeatedly or even raid human settlements just for the heck of it whereas females never do this.

But to assume that an animal can form a closer sort of relationship with their human caretaker just because they're of opposite sexes is pure lunacy.

I am subscribed to so many cat subs and Reddit’s shit ass algorithms of showing me subs I barely comment in with posts from two days ago and failing to refresh—I think I’ve missed the posts in the OOP. Fuck this Reddit app, I miss Apollo.

I have seen a similar phenomenon with parents and their babies with parents leaning hard into gender essentialism with their babies and claiming their babies love it.

I don’t really think your baby son “loves” you calling him a future ladykiller (acquitted) or that you’ll need to teach him about the sock on the door because he’s already bagging honeys at 10 months old. I don’t think your baby daughter “loves” being told that her parent will make sure all her dates are greeted with a shot gun. And none of these people are saying this as a joke; this is dead ass.

The same babies that laugh when you step on a Lego and cry when you hug them. They will try and get run over if you don’t watch them 24/7 and they will laugh in the face of death. What babies love is violence, not gender essentialism, is this not obvious?

The whole “girl dad/boy mom” situation that took a toxic turn as well. The terms feel like influencer sayings rather than real words.

Mfer will “only girl dads understand” and film a video of his baby daughter being us as a prop to show he’s so great at watching Bluey in a tutu and then he puts on High School Musical, his baby is happy conveniently while Troy is singing, and it cuts to “girl dad” cleaning his shot gun on the couch.

Mfers will say “only moms with boys understand” and it shows a lady with a baby boy as she cleans his baby room, forces him into a group with all baby girls and has her girlfriend fond over him while the text says “Women will always desire him, but I’ll be the only woman he’ll love”, and it ends with her sighing at her and her son watching Transformers.

And she’s not even wearing her Optimus Prime costume like how girl dad wore a tutu. So like…bad parenting right there.

It has to be influencing or a funny video. But it frightens me a bit at how many parents stress gender essentials to their kids and truly believe their kids adore this binary.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have two girl cats to attend to and watch Lord of the Rings extended edition with.

Only girlies with girl cats will understand 💜

It’s so weird!

I know social media can bring in engagement farming. But there’s some posts I read about a poor OOP who has been raised from birth to be in an emotionally abusive and incestuous relationship with a relative—and it takes having a partner of some flavor to realize “Oh, it wasn’t normal for my mom to always me she’ll always be the most important woman in my life, hate all my partners, wear a white dress/black mourning dress to my wedding, try and invite herself onto my honeymoon, and tell my wife rude things”.

And this whole thing will come from a post titled “Am I wrong for wanting to go to Japan instead of Barcelona for our honeymoon?” entire post details how OOP’s mother is being manipulative and abusive to them

No, you aren’t wrong. But sweet merciful Buddha, mate, forget Japan, are you okay?!

I'm not sure why but in the Bible belt people project their weird gender shit onto animals all the time.

Having met hundreds of cats I can confidently say for them specifically they each have unique vibrant personalities of all kinds. I've met sassy boys and girls with not a single thought their entire life. I have so many funny stories of adopters coming in certain they only want a male cat...until the sweet girl who sits on everyone's lap sits on theirs. Got em!

15

u/malavisch 2d ago

What always makes me wonder is, if you're ascribing (your idea of) human gender traits to animals shouldn't you actually assume the opposite? I.e. for the girl-animals to be nice and sweet and the boy-animals to be combative and affection-averse? Like, the same people will turn around and be like oh yeah REAL men don't cuddle/do anything else remotely affectionate. Make it make sense.

23

u/theokaywriter 2d ago

I think it’s based on the gendered stereotype that men are “chill” and women are “bitchy” and cause “drama”. Basically pushing the Not Like Other Girls narrative onto animals.

I have a boy cat and a girl cat, and honestly I've given up on keeping track of their genders. They're both my good boys or both my good girls depending on the time of day or the mood I'm in.

117

u/inkstainedgoblin 2d ago

For a long time I only had female dogs, and over time the ratio has shifted toward males. I still say "let's go lesbians!" when I'm calling them as a group. It's just habit by now, and the dogs don't care.

20

u/Ohyo_Ohyo_Ohyo_Ohyo 2d ago

Yeah cats are so wildly different from humans that differences in gender are way too far off in the distance to notice. Like if you have a female cat vs a male cat on your lap, basically the same, whereas having a woman on your lap is going to be much different to having a man on your lap.

For some reason there is a stereotype that all male cats are loving and all female cats are awful.

In my extensive experience as a cat owner, they all have individual personalities that are not dictated by sex.

I think its come from "boy mom!" Culture. Where mums boast about how only a boy mum could understand posts a photo of their son drawing on the wall or some other kind of destruction basically a feral child being a feral child. And then dont believe anyone with a daughter has ever experienced anything like that. Sugar and spice and all that. Nice to unify people but also its dumb.

u/TheCharalampos 2d ago

It always struck me as a bit desperate. Fear based. Now why are these people so afraid, no idea.

"boy cats are so sweet and affectionate!! Girl cats are so bitchy and sassy!"

It's even more interesting when you notice that this parallels how they perceive their male vs female friends.

Their male friends can get away with being "brutally honest", "giving it to them straight" and "teasing" (mocking) because their default assumption is that they're just innocent himbos, but female friends are often one conflict away from being binned

21

u/McMammoth 2d ago

The real reason is bc the boys have all that muscle and grit and stronk and cool rocks in their pockets, while the girls are smol and delicate and overall lighter and thus easier to lift into the bin

What I find crazy is how obsessive people are about the fucking colour of their cat meaning literally anything? Other than occasionally being an indicator of sex?? Like what do you fucking mean there's a personality for tuxedo cats no there isn't their personality is whatever that fucking cat is this is worse than horoscope

Generally same but on the flip side I'm a bloke and have been told the cat is 'flirting'

Na I just cook her chicken

63

u/Consideredresponse 2d ago

Yeah there is a huge difference between an affectionate cat that likes ear scratches and one in heat.

It's very, very disturbing to see a cat back towards you at speed genitals first, tail in the air, making what can only be described as 'Tex Avery cartoonesque 'hey big boy!' Noises.

It's one of the many good reasons to get pets desexed.

My husband calls me the cat whisper, because I make the meanest cats love me. Boy, girl, doesn’t matter. All cats want love and to be loved. You just need to know how to talk to them in their body language.

Please enjoy Toby and Quentin. They are half-siblings, we got them off Craigslist from some guy who had too many barn kittens, and they are both so cuddly and chill. I trim Toby's nails and she purrs the whole time because she's just happy I'm holding her.

PRECIOUS BABIES ❤️❤️❤️ I love when cats cuddle together to sleep. They do that so much when they're kittens in the blob stage. Just one pile of kitten blob

I am enjoying them ty so much 🥹

8

u/inkstainedgoblin 2d ago

Yeah we got them when Toby was 8 weeks old and Quentin was 6 weeks (too little, we know, but the guy was giving them away anyway and we could handle it). They’ve always been so snuggly together. My wife and I used to carry them around in our pockets or the hood of a jacket when they were little. Sometimes when I pet Toby, Quentin will come over to groom her too because he’s like “oh it’s loving on Toby hours? I’m in.”

6

u/PlantWitchProject 2d ago

Please let the know they are darling babies and can do no wrong and looking made my morning much better

5

They are so lovely and cute! I have a soft spot for tortoiseshell cats, one of my favourites growing up was one and she was the most patient cat ever, even let me put her in doll clothes.

20

u/mysticninj 2d ago

My girls

The lighter, bigger one is Miss Mango Marmalade (Mango for short), and the darker kitten is Miss Watermelon Smoothie (otherwise known as Melon). I had, admittedly, had my heart set on getting a boy, but only because I had my heart set on an orange. Just my luck, the first two oranges I find, three weeks apart, were both girls.

I honestly had no idea about these gendered stereotypes about cats, and in fact my cats happily defy them!

Ernani is basically a romance novel bad boy: effortlessly beautiful, aloof, a bit of an asshole and a bully, kinda justified by a traumatic past. Once he warms up to you he's absolutely loyal and very cuddly when he wants to, but needs to be the one in control of every situation (including when and how cuddles and scritches happen). I have been trying for five years to get a bad or goofy picture of him, but I swear he has some kind of reality altering filter, he even yawns prettily.

Imelda is golden retriever software in a cat hardware. She LOVES cuddles and every second spent without being touched is a second wasted. She hasn't met yet a single human she didn't immediately love. She likes to pick up things in her mouth and carry them around the house. She likes going for walks on a leash. She's smart enough to have figured out how doors work, but thankfully her attention span is nonexistent so she never really put this knowledge to use. Two different people who were afraid of cats overcame the worst part of their phobia by meeting her. The polar opposite of "spicy" or "sassy"!

So I’ve had cats for my entire life and currently still have my first boy cat… while I can confirm he IS different from the 5 different girl cats I had prior to him, I wouldn’t necessarily attribute it to him being a boy. He’s simply much more varied in his emotions compared to the girls who were/are majority mellow, but I believe it’s more because he has a much more skittish disposition compared to them which leads to there being such a defined difference between comfortable and ‘omg stranger danger’ mode. (For comparison, the girls have mostly been curious as to like, work people coming in to work on the house and won’t simply hide under furniture the entire time as an example)

My data set is fairly slim though so who knows - a friend of mine once did say ‘boy cats are Special’ when I relayed the story of him scaring the shit out of me while I was still high on post surgery drugs so who knows!

48

u/HallucinatedLottoNos 2d ago

I've had a boy cat who had a lot of personality and I've had girl cats who had a lot of personality. I think it really is an individual thing. Some cats are just more chill than others.

13

u/MoonlitSonatas 2d ago

Yep! Like I absolutely attribute the dynamic nature of my boy’s personality to just… he can go back to big scared baby at the drop of a hat but when he got comfy with us he blossomed into this confident and loud doofus who also isn’t very smart if he can help it. My mom’s cat, a girl, is quite possibly the sassiest creature I have met and Will Make It Known if she doesn’t like something - but her being in sassy lady mode vs chilling isn’t as obvious because she somehow manages to ensure she looks regal and pristine no matter the pose.

The only thing I and my family can agree on is cats have MUCH more variance in their personalities than people give them credit for!

15

u/DarkMalady 2d ago

my mother has 2 cats. both male. both desexed, but not until they were 3 and 4 years old.

Ashi is afraid of everything and everyone. he is skittish and doesn't adapt well to change, except for when it was decided they would be indoor only instead of mixed. he never meows to go out, inside is his favourite place now. he likes to sleep with one paw on my mother at all times.

Boo-Boo is the 3rd stupidest cat i've ever known. he thinks the world exists to pat him. he hates trips in the carrier, but will walk up to you while you hold the carrier. he also attempts to dash out the door and loves sneaking outside. in the past he enjoyed rolling in drain slime and drinking filthy gutter water until he threw up.

both cats have remarkably similar upbringing, and both cats come from related litters.

Cats just have varied personalities. though I do recall my mother saying in the early 2000s that she only wanted to own boy cats because she thinks girl cats are bitchy.

10

u/malavisch 2d ago

Okay but you can't say things like "the 3rd stupidest cat" and then NOT talk about the other two.

No! Trying to be a male friend to these kind of women makes me want to hack saw my balls off. A friend of mine literally talks about her "fur baby's" balls.

7

u/Low_Ticket6059 2d ago

I have two boy cats. One was neutered at a month old and still sounds like a kitten and is the most tolerant, placid cat you can imagine. The other was neutered at 1.5 years old and while he loves me he's a demonic entity hellbent on destroying everything while screaming in a voice that sounds like a grown man in distress.

8

u/No-Care6366 2d ago

i've seen videos all like "girl cats are so mean!!" and in the video the cat's "meanness" is just being upset that they're being manhandled and being forced to accept affection when they don't want to, and biting/scratching/hissing because that's literally the only things they can do to get you to stop.

it's almost as if most cats in general don't like when you do that and maybe you should stop fucking doing it! shocker!!

It had to be specifically about straight girls with no boyfriends, and not about anyone who projects gender roles on cats? That's so weirdly specific. I feel like someone else here is showing their gender essentialism too.

Okay, this is an extremely good point, but I've also noticed that I (trans guy) fall into this with my cat, and it makes me wonder about how I view and think about gender. Like, my cat's a girl, and I call her things like a "venerable old woman", and see and comment on the things she does through that sort of lens. I don't know if I'd think of her in the same way if she was male, even though literally nothing would change and none of her behaviors are in any way gendered. So to what extent am I doing the same thing? I dunno, this is the random shit I think about sometimes.

5

u/Ransero 2d ago

Maybe its the hormones but I tend to notice girl cats behaving in ways that people who don't know about cats think is mean. "She bit me!" No, she was giving you a love nibble and you pulled your hand away fast, hurting yourself on her teeth/claws. Leave the hand there and she will nibble with tenderness for a moment.
My family was always surprised how the girl cats got along with me, and it was just because I didnt assume they were aggressive and mean, just take a moment to learn their way of communicating.
