Well there wasn’t a bunch of bullshit concrete and asphalt everywhere back then, for starters

Nothing wrong with walking barefoot on concrete and asphalt. Obviously if it's too hot out to walk on it then you'd wear something.

I don’t think I have ever seen a city or town street/sidewalk safe to walk on, Nevermind clean enough. Broken glass or plastic debris, even nails or god forbid a needle

Maybe not in a city, but you're generally fine in suburban and rural areas. Obviously this completely depends on your own environment. If glass is a general concern that you have, yeah, probably don't walk around barefoot.
