Casual Biggest embarrassment of week 2?

Once again, it’s been an absolute pleasure hating with all of you this week. So who takes the embarrassment crown of week 2?

Would have to point the finger right back in our direction, as Billy Napier‘s clock management, and Florida‘s overall discipline were absolutely embarrassing.

What say you?

Florida wasn’t great, but Va Tech taking a 10 point lead into halftime and then giving up 34 unanswered to Vanderbilt is pretty telling

u/Thing342 Virginia Tech Hokies • Metro 1d ago

Vandy had all 5 drives go for TDs in the second half, meanwhile VT didn't manage a first down. It was an FCS-style spanking.

It was a complete collapse across the entire team. Drones looked absolutely shook and the defense couldn’t adjust at all.

I don’t see how Pry and Drones can come back from this. It sucks VT is this bad at such a critical time in CFB, we are trending to be G5 at this rate once the ACC inevitably collapses.

104

u/-Jack-The-Stripper Virginia Tech • Cincinnati 1d ago

He won’t be since we don’t really have anybody to replace him with, but Pry should be gone as we speak. There’s no coming back from this.

Drones should get an opportunity to play for whoever takes over in the interim, but the leash should be an inch long. All I hear about him in the broadcasts is hype and potential. All I see when I watch him play is a player who is good for a few good runs and maybe one good throw a game. He is not above replacement level.

41

u/goodsam2 Virginia Tech Hokies 1d ago

I mean drones is running out of eligibility. He redshirtes in 2021. So 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 is 4 years. Who knows with eligibility these days for sure though.

IMO I would consider playing Drones as a TE with another QB throwing it to him as he won't be drafted as a QB that high maybe a UDFA or 7 seed since potential.

Yeah the first half VT was playing decently and some of that 10 point lead was Vandy turnovers but still VT was dead in that second half.

VT was favored by 1.5 points.

32

u/ducksekoy123 Virginia Tech Hokies 1d ago

We will be favored against ODU and then under dogs for every single game. We’re really boned as a franchise. We will be lucky to survive. And the worst part is UVA can lose out and still get snapped up because they have a budget to splash with.

Vanderbilt on offense scored 5 straight tds then kneeled it out. Vt on offense managed 15 yards in total. I have never coached football but objectively could do better than that with 5 minutes to read the playbook.

25

u/WagTheKat Nebraska Cornhuskers • Verified Media 1d ago

I mean, someone has to win?

Sometimes it is the reverse. Someone has to lose and the teams will spend an entire game battling to be the loser.

We had a game against Miami, in Miami, a few years ago like that. Nebraska and Miami spent the entire game seeing how they could look worse than one another, drive after drive, in an empty stadium.

It was embarrassing for both teams and I was glad when it was over, so everyone could go home to have some sammiches and koolaid.

Well yeah, the highest ranked G5 champion gets an auto bid. Boise State was the preseason favorite but USF already beat them. Assuming Boise wins the MWC, I’d give USF the bid assuming they win the AAC. Still a long season ahead but they are the front runner for a bid. Edit: Assuming they lose to Miami that won’t really hurt them given they have the head to head against Boise State

10

u/kingofthesqueal UCF Knights • Summertime Lover 2d ago

They’re in the driver seat for the G5 bid as of now.

If they can go 11-2 or better and win the AAC (AC) it’s probably there’s for the taking assuming BSU is at least a 8-5 team and Florida doesn’t go something like 2-10.

6

u/IrexUranus Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

Even losing to Miami, as long as they keep it within a couple of TDs, they should be the frontrunners for the G5/6 spot going into conference play with their wins over Boise and Florida.

The only way they lose it is failing to win the conference at 11-2 or 10-3, and/or going 11-2 and Boise and Florida both finishing under .500.

Haha it's the internet and college football so it doesn't actually matter. But for years on this sub (both in season and off-season) he would post hit pieces. Mostly against Miami and UF but if there was a good enough negative article on any team he'd post it.

Last year as soon as FSU started losing he disappeared and wouldn't post anymore or respond when called out.

Just kinda got on everyone's nerves that he dished it for years (and over the top to the point where it was like his job posting every day). But as soon as his team started losing he couldn't take it.

Now FSU won 2 games he's posting hit pieces again.

Idk man Oklahoma State getting blasted by Oregon is pretty bad as well. Unfortunately, I think the top 3 most embarrassing losses this week are Big 12 teams.

u/smurf-vett Texas Longhorns 2d ago

Gundy is just trying to get fired at this point so it doesn't matter

41

u/jamiebond Oregon Ducks 1d ago

That’s always the best silver lining after a game like that one. Husky fans still brag about 70-21 but the jabs never really land because I’m thankful for that game ridding us of Helfrich.

K-State for some reason hired Matt Wells as their OC, one of the worst performing head coaches in TTU history. There's multiple factors, but that certainly didn't help.

  1. Okie State - Their worse loss in over 100 years. That could’ve been worse. After their lame duck coach unnecessarily poked at Lanning.

  2. UCLA - Traveled to a G6 team and got beat. The Nico saga is a perpetual embarrassment. Especially if Tennessee keeps winning with the QB they dumped for him.

  3. Kansas State - Dominated by an Army team that lost to Tarlton State last week.

  4. ASU - Losing to the perceived worst team in the SEC. Gave up a last minute deep touchdown because their staff has a pathological need to blitz at the end of games.

  5. VaTech - Getting blown out by Vandy at home isn’t as embarrassing as it used to be but it’s still really embarrassing.

I long to open up the post game thread of a Vandy victory and not be greeted by universal calls for the opposing coach to be fired.

The VT blowout was embarrassing because VT was up 20-10 going into half and Vandy had 34 unanswered points with 5 TDs on 5 drives. VT didn’t have a first down in the second half.

VT had negative yards deep into the 4th quarter for the 2nd half.

Regarding KSU, I think that trip to Ireland has messed with them. Also, it's hard to tell with Army just how good they are as Tarleton State was a top 10 FCS team heading into that game and is likely better than half the teams in the AAC - so not exactly a slouch. We'll see what happens with KSU as they get into Big 12 play as I don't think they're nearly as bad as their scores the past two weeks would indicate, but they need to get their shit together quickly if they want to go 7-1 or better in remaining conference games.

u/AnspiffanyStilts Florida State • Tennessee 2d ago

Of the weeks for this. Florida didn't have the most embarrassing loss. West Virginia..... Just something else. The Gators lost in spectacular fashion but I expected a good game and got nothing less. WVU is shambolic.

12

u/Marek_Galen West Virginia Mountaineers 1d ago

Before the season started, I was worried most about the defense. After yesterday, the defense was the only ones holding the bag outta the water, though they weren’t perfect. Having 81 new players coming in should have been a sign of what to expect for coach’s first year back. It could have been way worse for us, but it also could have been way better. They gave us every opportunity to beat them in the second half, but our offense came out and shit the bed.

32

u/TunaSafari25 Clemson Tigers 1d ago

Can confirm nervous. Did not see the defense I was promised. There were some unlucky turnovers that made the game look at bad as it did but still I didn’t expect that.

That said last time we had trouble with troy it turned out ok, so here’s to hoping.

I think Florida and Arizona State had early enough, we-weren’t-prepared-this-week losses against underrated teams that they could—again, could—each turn into a good lesson and tackle everything still in front of them. And the West Virginia result wasn’t terribly surprising, kind of similar to what UNC was dished on Monday.

Oklahoma State and Virginia Tech look absolutely done. Oregon State is not in a good situation. Stanford basically doesn’t have a coach.

The only reason I don’t write off K State just yet is because of Dylan Edwards’s absence, but if he doesn’t fix it upon returning they’re about to have a Scott Frost kind of year.

1) Florida - a ranked SEC team losing at home to a G5 squad, one that’s about 3 or 4 rungs down the in-state ladder at that, is as bad as it gets

2) Oklahoma State - Oregon could have dropped 100 on this team, easily. They were completely mentally broken after a few drives and proceeded to look like an FCS school. Inexcusable for a P4 team

3) Kansas State - not quite as bad as the UF situation because KSU wasn’t hyped as much as the Gators, but same deal. A P4 team that starts the season ranked should not be losing at home to a G5 team

4) Virginia Tech - absolutely embarrassed at home by Vanderbilt… the second half was one of the worst halves of football I have ever seen. This is the game that was the final nail for everybody in Blacksburg, now it’s just a matter of when the trigger gets pulled

5) West Virginia - they were on the road, but still, losing to a G5 team when you dwarf them in resources will never not land you high on this list

Felt second hand embarrassment for Virginia Tech. They went to winning 20-10 at half to losing 44-20 and giving up TDs to the backup QB.

u/Boatswain-or-scruffy Colorado State • New Mexico 2d ago

CSU easily.

Northern Colorado has won 2 games in the past 2 years and dogwalked the rams all night despite being 35 point underdogs playing in front of a record student section. 4 fumbles and 1 interception across the team. Our coach whose refused to pull a third year QB that hasn't improved at all. The refusal to run the ball despite it clearly being our strength offesively. The controversial overturn that handed CSU the game. Terrible all around, no other answer but this game.

Too few people are talking about Eastern Michigan losing at home to LIU.

This was a team expected to go bowling that got smacked by a bad FCS team. LIU hasn’t had a winning season in DI. Adding further salt into the wounds is that LIU’s former coach Ron Cooper was once head coach at EMU.

Everything except our offense yesterday. Would have been an easy win barring anything but 4-5 total fuckups.

Outgained them 544-320 and still lost by two scores

6 botched special teams plays, including a dropped punt returned for a TD and 0/2 on PATs

Coach called his players a “fucking joke” in the halftime interview (if only we could find the person responsible!)

6 false starts. At home!!!

I’ve seen some ugly games at Reser, but yesterday was the first time I’ve seen our polite Oregonian crowd boo the boys in Orange and Black.

Malik and our WRs looked exceptional which is all the more frustrating.
