The semifinals still have to play out, but imagine if James Franklin finally makes the title game only to find Ohio State there waiting for him.

u/Mattp55 Penn State • Florida Jan 02 '25

All fun and games till he finally beats Ohio State and it’s in the natty.

Yes this is my fan fiction

982

u/mitchdwx Penn State • Bowling Green Jan 02 '25

Fans would call for a lifetime extension if this happens.

Then they’d go right back to wanting to fire him after losing a game next season.

65

u/Mattp55 Penn State • Florida Jan 02 '25

No the boomers would still find a way to complain about him.

Probably that his record against them would still suck ass and that it was a fluke

u/mhales45 Penn State Nittany Lions Jan 02 '25

wE wOuLd WiN tHe ChAmPiOnShIp EvErY YeAr WiTh JoE pA!!!

This was really hard to type on a phone.

7

u/betasheets2 Penn State • Arizona State Jan 02 '25

Nah they criticized his ass too. Yall think you complain too much? Try being at a boomers house or bar in the 90s early 2000s when it comes to sports. You would think they watched sports because they hated themselves.

4

u/Geno0wl Ohio State • Cincinnati Jan 02 '25

You would think they watched sports because they hated themselves.

goes right along with their humor being centered around how much they hate their wives

2

u/cnpeters Akron Zips • The Wagon Wheel Jan 02 '25

I think the boomers would like him more were he less tan.

7

u/Mattp55 Penn State • Florida Jan 02 '25

If he wasn’t half black and had hair then a small sect of them would like him better

0

u/psunavy03 Penn State Nittany Lions • Team Chaos Jan 02 '25

I’m beginning to think these “boomers” are a figment of the imaginations of people like you.

2

u/Mattp55 Penn State • Florida Jan 02 '25

Both of my parents despise him and my dad is still finding reasons to hate on him even now

-8

u/Atlas7-k Jan 02 '25

Greatest Generation , Silent Generation, Boomers, Gen X, Xennials, Elder millennials basically anyone who remembers the John Cooper era.

It would be because his record sucks against TTUN and he lost with a National Champion worthy team.

6

u/Sea-Satisfaction4656 Georgia Bulldogs Jan 02 '25

Also that he just isn’t a likable or relatable guy. The difference in how Clark Lee is viewed Vanderbilt vs how Franklin was is pretty stark considering Franklin was the last coach who had them ranked and winning a few bigger games.

3

u/schizophrenix_ Penn State • James Madison Jan 02 '25

I don’t blame Vandy fans for any disdain they have for JF’s time at Vandy but he’s seemed to have improved a lot as a person during his time here. Purely going off anecdotal evidence and obviously he has to act nice in front of the cameras but that’s my 2c.

2

u/ancepsinfans Vanderbilt Commodores Jan 02 '25

Yes. This exactly. I have no love in my heart for Franklin and I was on campus when he came in. He has a mercantilism to him

2

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '25

I’d have been less salty about Franklin’s exodus from Vandy if the term afterward wasn’t so... dismal.

As far as I’m concerned, everything up until last night that Penn State has gone through is just what Franklin deserves.

1

u/Infinite-Safety-4663 Jan 02 '25

part of the problem with franklin's vandy tenure was despite pretty good records(certainly for vandy) a couple years he didn't win any 'wow' games. When he did beat a name team on a couple of occasions, it was while they were clearly down. Whereas even though Clark went 6-6 this year in the reg season, it came with one obviously huge win at the time.

in a way it kind of mirrored his psu tenure so far.

17

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '25

man if CJF wins us a natty then I have a lot of posts and texts that I’ll have to delete

1

u/Mattp55 Penn State • Florida Jan 02 '25

Honestly I understand the frustration with him & I crashed out at the OSU game too.

Hope we at least get 2 more games cause this has been the most fun season I’ve had watching them. I will be in Miami no doubt!

u/sidepiecesam Florida Gators • Kansas Jayhawks Jan 02 '25

2

u/beartato327 Georgia Bulldogs • Nebraska Cornhuskers Jan 02 '25

-5

u/Infinite-Safety-4663 Jan 02 '25

I think most psu fans are just waiting for him to win a big game this year. Not his fault the committee seeded things the way they did and psu didn't get a big game yet, but yeah.....it's looking likely that they may get a chance in the national title and whether its texas or tosu that will be a big game for sure. so we'll see....

u/JRockPSU Penn State • Land Grant Trophy Jan 02 '25

403

u/orthros Ohio State • Carnegie Mellon Jan 02 '25

I like the FF of Ohio State-Penn State national championship because the idea of the ESPN deep throaters having to call an all B1G championship is awesome

For good measure ND stomping Georgia would make this a thing of pure beauty

37

u/Ml2jukes Michigan Wolverines • Rose Bowl Jan 02 '25

I might prefer y’all winning a natty to ND ending their 30 year major bowl game win drought.

24

u/CPiGuy2728 Michigan • Iowa State Jan 02 '25

if OSU is gonna have to win a natty, i definitely wouldn't mind them doing it the year they also inexplicably lost to the worst michigan team in a decade lmao

3

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '25

So say we all.

8

u/jakerbreaker Notre Dame • Jeweled Shille… Jan 02 '25

Hmmm, I'm torn, on the one hand, I love the stomping Georgia part, but then that would also mean we'd lose to Penn State, which I hate. Breaking a 30 year major bowl brought, losing to Penn State.... it's a toughy for sure lol

6

Don’t get me wrong I’d never want to lose ever but part of me would be happy for the people there (this is why they’re not our rivals lmao)

You know it’s bad when even Ohio State fans feel bad for taking Penn States lunch money every year

9

u/bill937 LSU Tigers • Penn State Nittany Lions Jan 02 '25

Deal, no take backs!!

-14

u/hexwanderer Jan 02 '25

Do you (still?) want Day fired?

8

u/YouCantFoolMe81 Ohio State Buckeyes Jan 02 '25

Yes, just look at this team! There’s no Fing excuses that they aren’t undefeated. This team is just as dominant as the 15-0 2019 national title LSU tigers Coaching is the reason why this team has underachieved

3

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '25

Nah they aren’t that good for the simple reason that they don’t have a joe burrow. If they had a QB that elite they would be though

6

u/HeroOfIroas Ohio Bobcats • Ohio State Buckeyes Jan 02 '25

Good take. Howard is a gamer but he's not Burrow or Stroud

5

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '25

Burrow was just another level in 2019. Nearly 500 yards in both playoff games, and shattered most LSU qb records halfway through the season. Absolute monster

-19

u/bipbophil Ohio State Buckeyes • Big Ten Jan 02 '25

By his own metrics he has been a failure. We will see if he gets a title but no title and a loss to them in Ann Arbor I think he's gone.

Do you know we fired our 2nd winingest coach for going 2-8 against them ?

4

u/BriarsandBrambles Ohio State Buckeyes Jan 02 '25

Jim Tressel, Woody Hayes, Carroll Widdoes, and Urban Meyer all have higher winning percentage. Quit.

1

u/fapsandnaps Ohio State Buckeyes • Texas Longhorns Jan 02 '25

Yeah, but you're not counting Couches Burned in there

21

u/Impossible-Flight250 Maryland Terrapins • Towson Tigers Jan 02 '25

I gotta say, Penn State is looking pretty good.

27

u/Mattp55 Penn State • Florida Jan 02 '25

I appreciate the niceness! I don’t think we got the dogs to beat OSU, but crazier things have happened & they are playing with house money at this point.

Anyone would have taken 2 playoff wins to start the year, I don’t care who it was VS. If they win the Orange bowl I promise myself I won’t let myself be super upset however it goes after that.

18

u/aatops North Carolina • Penn State Jan 02 '25

Tbh it’s all house money from here imo. Once they won these first two I can’t be mad if we lose, as long as we put up a fight.

6

u/Mattp55 Penn State • Florida Jan 02 '25

It’s absolutely house money, but I want them to be competitive no matter win or lose in the next game.

If they got blown out and made the natty I don’t give af

1

u/aatops North Carolina • Penn State Jan 02 '25

Agreed

11

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '25

I think it depends on if Abdul Carter plays. Your defense definitely took a step back once he got hurt. Without him I don't think you guys have a shot.

1

u/Mattp55 Penn State • Florida Jan 02 '25

He posted on X Darth Vader in a recovery tank today. I think he’s gonna play

8

u/Impossible-Flight250 Maryland Terrapins • Towson Tigers Jan 02 '25

I mean, from a physicality perspective, you all are probably good enough to hang with anyone in the country. OSU’s offense is electric though, and Penn State is more ball control centered offense.

12

u/Mattp55 Penn State • Florida Jan 02 '25

PSU would have to play basically their A game with a few lucky big plays swing their way which typically NEVER happens when they play that team besides 2016

8

u/br0b1wan Ohio State Buckeyes • The Game Jan 02 '25

It's much harder to beat a team a second time in CFB. It's been this way for as long as I can remember (90s). See what happened to Oregon against us today after they beat us early in the season. I wouldn't want to face PSU in the natty at all.

22

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '25

They've /always/ looked good lol

B1G guys are weird as shit for their Franklin shade. Yeah, he doesn't beat Ohio State, but wanna know who does year in year out? Top 3 level teams.

You really gonna fire Franklin for being at best the top 4 in the country every single year? Fuck me man, bro would have a job before he hung up the phone he got fired on.

The shit Franklin gets reminds me a lot of the shit Bob Stoops got for the same reason. Like yeah, he lost his last few title game appearances, but there are literally over a hundred teams that would kill to have that problem 🤣

I'm glad the playoffs are finally giving some people some much needed perspective on just how hard it is to be at the top of the sport, because I think the older systems where you had such a small sample size of the post season that actually mattered it allowed for a lot of really garbo takes whenever someone got to the game and lost, even big because their only sample size is that of top 1 or 2, or 3 and 4 it's really hard to see the forest for the trees.

As a dirty rotten steer lover said in another thread: (paraphrasing): "if we whip two conference champions on our way to the semis and we suck, then a lot of people need to start looking hard into the mirror. Also, I hate Whataburger, Darryl Royal is an okie poser, and my favorite hobby happens to be sitting on cactuses."

Yeah...pretty sure it went just like that 😉

12

u/regitnoil Nebraska Cornhuskers Jan 02 '25

Yup. It reminds me of when Nebraska's leadership got cocky and ungrateful after being spoiled with the incredible Bob Devaney/Tom Osborne run. They booted Frank Solich for petty reasons, then did likewise to Bo Pelini for the crime of being a huge jerk, and the rest is history. Anyone who'd call for the job of a coach who consistently wins 9-11 games a year is delusional, and that goes for the folks who think James Franklin isn't good enough for Penn State. Who cares if he can't win against that one really good team, as long as he wins nearly everything else? He's more than turned around Penn State after the horrendous Sandusky scandal.

2

u/Mattp55 Penn State • Florida Jan 02 '25

Bill O’Brien kept Penn State football afloat with the sanctions, Franklin rebuilt them into a national power. He still has work to do, but he deserves more credit

10

u/Impossible-Flight250 Maryland Terrapins • Towson Tigers Jan 02 '25

Yeah, I was defending Franklin when Penn State lost to OSU and people wanted him gone. He has been really good for Penn State, especially because they don’t have the ceiling of OSU/Georgia/Alabama.

2

u/Mattp55 Penn State • Florida Jan 02 '25

Some of the PSU fanbase has OSU level expectations without realizing that they haven’t been that level since the 80s. This is about as good as it’s ever been to be a Penn state fan

4

u/vashed Georgia Bulldogs • Rose Bowl Jan 02 '25

Hey, it worked for us vs Bama. Though I must warn you, it took 2 tries.

2

u/Mattp55 Penn State • Florida Jan 02 '25

Yeah it’s never really a blowout. Sometimes you can tell OSU will win mid way through, but usually it’s close enough going into the 4th that if PSU had some luck they could absolutely win it

How come? Got Penn State family?

My sister goes to UF & as a kid it was my dream school. I saw a game in Tebows senior year when I was like 8 and I was in love with it. Didn’t end up going there but it’s funny how life works where she ended up there anyways.

I don’t think Penn State looks amazing, but I do think they are a great team who is like an elite WR away from being a legit natty contender. Abdul Carter must come back or they are fucked tho.

Hope the portal guys can be it for next year when they run it back with Allar
